    Thermodynamically Stable One-Component Metallic Quasicrystals

    Classical density-functional theory is employed to study finite-temperature trends in the relative stabilities of one-component quasicrystals interacting via effective metallic pair potentials derived from pseudopotential theory. Comparing the free energies of several periodic crystals and rational approximant models of quasicrystals over a range of pseudopotential parameters, thermodynamically stable quasicrystals are predicted for parameters approaching the limits of mechanical stability of the crystalline structures.     A Suggested Methodology for Establishing Evangelistic Contact With the Upper Classes in Jamaica

    Problem. The Seventh-day Adventist Church was established in Jamaica in 1903. Since then, the church has grown with membership totalling 162,831 by 1995. In 1995, there were 2,500,000 inhabitants in Jamaica, with 1 in 15 claiming to be a Seventh-day Adventist. Jamaicans can be divided into nine social classes; the Seventh-day Adventist Church has been successful in reaching mainly two of these classes, the poor and the lower-middle. Presently the SDA Church and the upper classes are insulated from each other. This dissertation suggests an approach to establish contact with the upper classes so that they can be reached with the SDA message. Method. The research shows that, while the method of evangelism commonly used in Jamaica is successful in reaching the lower classes, it has been ineffective in attracting or making contact with the upper classes. Intentional Ministries (any social ministry, instrument, or program created and designed by the church to make a deliberate impact within the local community) is suggested as a method of evangelism to establish contact with the upper classes and make the way possible for personal evangelism to take place. Significance. There has never been a deliberate attempt by any denomination in the history of Jamaica to reach the upper classes with the gospel. The Seventh-day Adventist Church, in developing an approach to reach the upper classes, would be attempting a form of evangelism that is unprecedented not only in the SDA Church but in the history of all other denominations in Jamaica. All people, groups, and classes need to be reached with the Seventh-day Adventist message; the upper classes are no exception. Intentional Ministries can be the bridge that the church can use to establish contact with the upper classes and make it possible for evangelization to take place

    DATA AUGMENTATION FOR SYNTHETIC APERTURE RADAR USING ALPHA BLENDING AND DEEP LAYER TRAINING

    Human-based object detection in synthetic aperture RADAR (SAR) imagery is complex and technical, laboriously slow but time critical—the perfect application for machine learning (ML). Training an ML network for object detection requires very large image datasets with imbedded objects that are accurately and precisely labeled. Unfortunately, no such SAR datasets exist. Therefore, this paper proposes a method to synthesize wide field of view (FOV) SAR images by combining two existing datasets: SAMPLE, which is composed of both real and synthetic single-object chips, and MSTAR Clutter, which is composed of real wide-FOV SAR images. Synthetic objects are extracted from SAMPLE using threshold-based segmentation before being alpha-blended onto patches from MSTAR Clutter. To validate the novel synthesis method, individual object chips are created and classified using a simple convolutional neural network (CNN); testing is performed against the measured SAMPLE subset. A novel technique is also developed to investigate training activity in deep layers. The proposed data augmentation technique produces a 17% increase in the accuracy of measured SAR image classification. This improvement shows that any residual artifacts from segmentation and blending do not negatively affect ML, which is promising for future use in wide-area SAR synthesis.Outstanding ThesisMajor, United States Air ForceApproved for public release.     Automated low-altitude flight and landing in remote areas within a civilian environment are investigated, where initial cost, ongoing maintenance costs, and system productivity are important considerations. An approach has been taken which has: (1) utilized those technologies developed for military applications which are directly transferable to a civilian mission; (2) exploited and developed technology areas where new methods or concepts are required; and (3) undertaken research with the potential to lead to innovative methods or concepts required to achieve a manual and fully automatic remote area low-altitude and landing capability. The project has resulted in a definition of system operational concept that includes a sensor subsystem, a sensor fusion/feature extraction capability, and a guidance and control law concept. These subsystem concepts have been developed to sufficient depth to enable further exploration within the NASA simulation environment, and to support programs leading to the flight test

    The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence, types, and severity of disabilities, as well as the medical conditions that may have caused disabilities among non-institutionalized older adults by high and low income. Disabled individuals aged 55 years and older were identified from the 1986 and 1991 Health and Activity Limitation Surveys. The overall unweighted sample sizes for each survey were 132,337 in 1986 and 91,355 in 1991. Approximately 40% of senior men and women reported having at least one disability, with women just slightly more likely than men to report being disabled. Almost twice as many senior women had low income compared with senior men. Mobility and agility disabilities were the most common types of disabilities reported by older adults. Arthritis/rheumatism was the medical condition most often reported as the primary cause of a disability among women. Men most often reported diseases of the ear and mastoid processes, with differences reported by low and high income respondents. Among 55-64 year olds, low income respondents were generally less likely to be categorized as mildly disabled and more likely to be categorized as severely disabled compared with high income respondents. In an effort to postpone or prevent disabilities in an ever-growing older population, public health initiatives are required to educate older adults about medical conditions and impairments that often lead to disability, particularly among low income seniors.disability; income; seniors

    Electroneutrality and Phase Behavior of Colloidal Suspensions

    Several statistical mechanical theories predict that colloidal suspensions of highly charged macroions and monovalent microions can exhibit unusual thermodynamic phase behavior when strongly deionized. Density-functional, extended Debye-H\"uckel, and response theories, within mean-field and linearization approximations, predict a spinodal phase instability of charged colloids below a critical salt concentration. Poisson-Boltzmann cell model studies of suspensions in Donnan equilibrium with a salt reservoir demonstrate that effective interactions and osmotic pressures predicted by such theories can be sensitive to the choice of reference system, e.g., whether the microion density profiles are expanded about the average potential of the suspension or about the reservoir potential. By unifying Poisson-Boltzmann and response theories within a common perturbative framework, it is shown here that the choice of reference system is dictated by the constraint of global electroneutrality. On this basis, bulk suspensions are best modeled by density-dependent effective interactions derived from a closed reference system in which the counterions are confined to the same volume as the macroions. Linearized theories then predict bulk phase separation of deionized suspensions only when expanded about a physically consistent (closed) reference system. Lower-dimensional systems (e.g., monolayers, small clusters), depending on the strength of macroion-counterion correlations, may be governed instead by density-independent effective interactions tied to an open reference system with counterions dispersed throughout the reservoir, possibly explaining observed structural crossover in colloidal monolayers and anomalous metastability of colloidal crystallites.Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures.     Weighted-density approximation for general nonuniform fluid mixtures

    In order to construct a general density-functional theory for nonuniform fluid mixtures, we propose an extension to multicomponent systems of the weighted-density approximation (WDA) of Curtin and Ashcroft [Phys. Rev. A 32, 2909 (1985)]. This extension corrects a deficiency in a similar extension proposed earlier by Denton and Ashcroft [Phys. Rev. A 42, 7312 (1990)], in that that functional cannot be applied to the multi-component nonuniform fluid systems with spatially varying composition, such as solid-fluid interfaces. As a test of the accuracy of our new functional, we apply it to the calculation of the freezing phase diagram of a binary hard-sphere fluid, and compare the results to simulation and the Denton-Ashcroft extension.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, to appear in Phys.
