    Experiences with Lymphangiography in Rhodesia

    Get PDF
A CAJM article on the adaptation of Lymphangiography in Zimbabwe (Rhodesia.)Lymphangiography has really only been attempted in Rhodesia since 1967, but our experience is rapidly growing. For a great many years improvised types of apparatus were used in an attempt to cannulate the vessels. With the introduction of lymphangiographic sets this is no longer necessary and the use of the proper tools makes lymphangiography an easier but still time- consuming procedure

Time variation of fundamental couplings and dynamical dark energy

Scalar field dynamics may give rise to a nonzero cosmological variation of fundamental constants. Within different scenarios based on the unification of gauge couplings, the various claimed observations and bounds may be combined in order to trace or restrict the time history of the couplings and masses. If the scalar field is responsible for a dynamical dark energy or quintessence, cosmological information becomes available for its time evolution. Combining this information with the time variation of couplings, one can determine the interaction strength between the scalar and atoms, which may be observed by tests of the Weak Equivalence Principle. We compute bounds on the present rate of coupling variation from experiments testing the differential accelerations for bodies with equal mass and different composition and compare the sensitivity of various methods. In particular, we discuss two specific models of scalar evolution: crossover quintessence and growing neutrino models.Comment: 26 pages, 2 figures; minor typos & added references, to be published in JCA

A CAJM investigation of the Effects of Inoculated and Intralymphatic Vaccinia Virus on Primary and Secondary Deposits of Malignant Melanoma. The six patients included in this investigation were selected on the basis of histologically-proven malignant melanomas of the lower extremity, with either local intradermal metastases or regional lymph node involvement. If unvaccinated in the previous five years, vaccination was performed at least 14 days before using the virus therapeutically. Vaccinia virus was prepared from stock vacccine obtained from the South African Institute for Medical Research. Virus was inoculated on the Chorio-allantoic membrane of 12 day embryonated hens’ eggs in which growth was confluent on the third day. Virus was extracted in buffered saline, cleared and tested for sterility. The titre of the undiluted material was 107 pock forming units per ml. This was used at a dilution of 1:50 for both the superficial and deep lesions

The role of protein phosphatase 2A catalytic subunit Cα in embryogenesis: evidence from sequence analysis and localization studies

    Get PDF
Protein phosphatase 2A (PP2A) constitutes one of the major families of protein serine/threonine phosphatases found in all eukaryotic cells. PP2A holoenzymes are composed of a catalytic subunit complexed with a structural regulatory subunit of 65 kDa. These core subunits associate with regulatory subunits of various sizes to form different heterotrimers which have been purified and evaluated with regard to substrate specificity. In fully differentiated tissues PP2A expression levels are highest in the brain, however, relatively little is known about expression in the developing embryo. In order to determine the composition of PP2A catalytic subunits in the mouse, cDNAs were cloned and the genomic organization of PP2A Cα was determined. By a gene targeting approach in the mouse, we have previously shown that the absence of the major catalytic subunit of PP2A, Cα, resulted in embryonic lethality around embryonic day E6.5. No mesoderm was formed which implied that PP2A plays a crucial role in gastrulation. Here, we extended our studies and analyzed wildtype embryos for Cα expression at subsequent stages of development. After gastrulation is completed, we find high expression of Cα restricted to the neural folds, which suggests that PP2A plays an additional pivotal role in neurulation

Leptogenesis through direct inflaton decay to light particles

We present a scenario of nonthermal leptogenesis following supersymmetric hybrid inflation, in the case where inflaton decay to both heavy right handed neutrino and SU(2)_L triplet superfields is kinematically disallowed. Lepton asymmetry is generated through the decay of the inflaton into light particles by the interference of one-loop diagrams with right handed neutrino and SU(2)_L triplet exchange respectively. We require superpotential couplings explicitly violating a U(1) R-symmetry and R-parity. However, the broken R-parity need not have currently observable low-energy signatures. Also, the lightest sparticle can be stable. Some R-parity violating slepton decays may, though, be detectable in the future colliders. We take into account the constraints from neutrino masses and mixing and the preservation of the primordial lepton asymmetry.Comment: 11 pages including 3 figures, uses Revtex, minor corrections, references adde

Searching singlet extensions of the supersymmetric standard model in Z6II Z_{6-II} orbifold compactification of heterotic string

We search for supersymmetric standard model realizations with extra singlets and extra U(1) U(1) using the heterotic string compactification on the Z6II Z_{6-II} orbifold with two Wilson lines. We analyze the vacuum restabilization mechanism for three representative Pati-Salam string models obtained in the literature and present detailed results for the effective superpotential compatible with the string selection rules. An automated selection of semi-realistic vacua along flat directions in the non-Abelian singlet modes field space is performed by requiring the presence of massless pairs of electroweak Higgs bosons having trilinear superpotential couplings with massless singlet modes and the decoupling of color triplet exotic modes needed to suppress BB and L L number violating processes.Comment: revtex4 format, 21 pages, 7 tables, shortened version added reference

Ultrafast electronic, infrared, and X-ray absorption spectroscopy study of Cu(i) phosphine diimine complexes

    Get PDF
The study aims to understand the role of the transient bonding in the interplay between the structural and electronic changes in heteroleptic Cu(I) diimine diphosphine complexes. This is an emerging class of photosensitisers which absorb in the red region of the spectrum, whilst retaining a sufficiently long excited state lifetime. Here, the dynamics of these complexes are explored by transient absorption (TA) and time-resolved infrared (TRIR) spectroscopy, which reveal ultrafast intersystem crossing and structural distortion occurring. Two potential mechanisms affecting excited state decay in these complexes involve a transient formation of a solvent adduct, made possible by the opening up of the Cu coordination centre in the excited state due to structural distortion, and by a transient coordination of the O-atom of the phosphine ligand to the copper center. X-ray absorption studies of the ground electronic state have been conducted as a prerequisite for the upcoming X-ray spectroscopy studies which will directly determine structural dynamics. The potential for these complexes to be used in bimolecular applications is confirmed by a significant yield of singlet oxygen production

Leptogenesis from a sneutrino condensate revisited

We re--examine leptogenesis from a right--handed sneutrino condensate, paying special attention to the BB-term associated with the see--saw Majorana mass. This term generates a lepton asymmetry in the condensate whose time average vanishes. However, a net asymmetry will result if the sneutrino lifetime is not much longer than the period of oscillations. Supersymmetry breaking by thermal effects then yields a lepton asymmetry in the standard model sector after the condensate decays. We explore different possibilities by taking account of both the low--energy and Hubble BB-terms. It will be shown that the desired baryon asymmetry of the Universe can be obtained for a wide range of Majorana mass.Comment: 17 revtex pages, 3 figures, 1 table. Dimensionless cosmology

Although it is well known that any consideration of the variations of fundamental constants should be restricted to their dimensionless combinations, the literature on variations of the gravitational constant GG is entirely dimensionful. To illustrate applications of this to cosmology, we explicitly give a dimensionless version of the parameters of the standard cosmological model, and describe the physics of Big Bang Neucleosynthesis and recombination in a dimensionless manner. The issue that appears to have been missed in many studies is that in cosmology the strength of gravity is bound up in the cosmological equations, and the epoch at which we live is a crucial part of the model. We argue that it is useful to consider the hypothetical situation of communicating with another civilization (with entirely different units), comparing only dimensionless constants, in order to decide if we live in a Universe governed by precisely the same physical laws. In this thought experiment, we would also have to compare epochs, which can be defined by giving the value of any {\it one} of the evolving cosmological parameters. By setting things up carefully in this way one can avoid inconsistent results when considering variable constants, caused by effectively fixing more than one parameter today. We show examples of this effect by considering microwave background anisotropies, being careful to maintain dimensionlessness throughout. We present Fisher matrix calculations to estimate how well the fine structure constants for electromagnetism and gravity can be determined with future microwave background experiments. We highlight how one can be misled by simply adding GG to the usual cosmological parameter set
