    Bacterial susceptibility and resistance to modelin-5.

    Modelin-5 (M5-NH ) killed with a minimum lethal concentration (MLC) of 5.86 ÎŒM and strongly bound its cytoplasmic membrane (CM) with a of 23.5 ÎŒM. The peptide adopted high levels of amphiphilic α-helical structure (75.0%) and penetrated the CM hydrophobic core (8.0 mN m ). This insertion destabilised CM structure increased lipid packing and decreased fluidity (Δ 0) and promoted only low levels of lysis (24.3%). The insertion and lysis of the CM by M5-NH showed a strong negative correlation with its lysyl phosphatidylglycerol (Lys-PG) content ( > 0.98). In combination, these data suggested that Lys-PG mediated mechanisms inhibited the membranolytic action of M5-NH against , thereby rendering the organism resistant to the peptide. These results are discussed in relation to structure/function relationships of M5-NH and CM lipids that underpin bacterial susceptibility and resistance to the peptide

    Type of milk feeding in infancy and health behaviours in adult life: findings from the Hertfordshire Cohort Study

    A number of studies suggest that breast-feeding has beneficial effects on an individual's cardiovascular risk factors in adulthood, although the mechanisms involved are unknown. One possible explanation is that adults who were breastfed differ in their health behaviours. In a historical cohort, adult health behaviours were examined in relation to type of milk feeding in infancy. From 1931 to 1939, records were kept on all infants born in Hertfordshire, UK. Their type of milk feeding was summarised as breastfed only, breast and bottle-fed, or bottle-fed only. Information about adult health behaviours was collected from 3217 of these men and women when they were aged 59–73 years. Diet was assessed using an administered FFQ; the key dietary pattern was a ‘prudent’ pattern that described compliance with ‘healthy’ eating recommendations. Of the study population, 60 % of the men and women were breastfed, 31 % were breast and bottle-fed, and 9 % were bottle-fed. Type of milk feeding did not differ according to social class at birth, and was not related to social class attained in adult life. There were no differences in smoking status, alcohol intake or reported physical activity according to type of milk feeding, but there were differences in the participants' dietary patterns. In a multivariate model that included sex and infant weight gain, there were independent associations between type of feeding and prudent diet scores in adult life (P= 0·009), such that higher scores were associated with having been breastfed. These data support experimental findings which suggest that early dietary exposures can have lifelong influences on food choice

    Ultrahigh Vacuum Chamber for Synchrotron X-ray Diffraction from Films Adsorbed on Single-crystal Surfaces

    An ultrahigh vacuum chamber has been developed for structural analysis of adsorbed films and single‐crystal surfaces using synchrotron x‐ray diffraction. It is particularly well suited for investigations of physisorbed and other weakly bound films. The chamber is small enough to transport and mount directly on a standard four‐axis diffractometer and can also be used independently of the x‐ray diffractometer. A low‐current, pulse‐counting, low‐energy electron diffraction/Auger spectroscopy system with a position‐sensitive detector enables in situ characterization of the film and substrate while the sample is located at the x‐ray scattering position. A closed‐cycle He refrigerator and electron bombardment heater provide controlled substrate temperatures from 30 to 1300 K. The chamber is also equipped with an ion sputter gun, a quadrupole mass spectrometer, and a gas handling system. Details of the design and operation of the instrument are described. To demonstrate the performance of the instrument, we present some preliminary results of a study of Xe physisorbed on the Ag(111) surface

    A versatile test facility has been designed and built to study space environments effects on small satellites and system components. Testing for potentially environmental-induced modifications of small satellites is critical to avoid possible deleterious or catastrophic effects over the duration of space mission. This is increasingly more important as small satellite programs have longer mission lifetimes, expand to more harsh environments (such as polar or geosynchronous orbits), make more diverse and sensitive measurements, minimize shielding to reduce mass, and utilize more compact and sensitive electronics (often including untested off-the-shelf components). The vacuum chamber described here is particularly well suited for cost-effective, long-duration tests of modifications due to exposure to simulated space environment conditions for CubeSats, system components, and small scale materials samples of \u3e10 cm X 10 cm. The facility simulates critical environmental components including the neutral gas atmosphere, the FUV/UVMS/NIR solar spectrum, electron plasma fluxes, and temperature. The solar spectrum (-120 nm to 2500 nm) is simulated using an Solar Simulator and Kr resonance lamps at up to four Suns intensity. Low and intermediate electron flood guns and a Sr90 ÎČ radiation source provide uniform, stable, electron flux (~ 20 eV to 2.5 MeV) over the CubeSat surface at \u3e5X intensities of the geosynchronous spectrum. Stable temperatures from 100 K to 450 K are possible. An automated data acquisition system periodically monitors and records the environmental conditions, sample photographs, UVMS/NIR reflectivity, IR absorptivity/emissivity, and surface voltage over the CubeSat face and in situ calibration standards during the sample exposure cycle

    The effect of communication between the right and left liver on the outcome of surgical drainage for jaundice due to malignant obstruction at the hilus of the liver

    Debate continues regarding the optimal management of irresectable malignant proximal biliary obstruction. Controversy exists concerning the ability of unilateral drainage to provide adequate biliary decompression with tumors that have occluded the communication between the right and left hepatic ductal systems. Between October 1986 and October 1989, 18 patients with malignant proximal biliary obstruction were treated by an intrahepatic biliary enteric bypass. Patients were divided into two groups based on the presence or absence of a communication between the right and left biliary systems. In Group I (n = 9), there was free communication; and in Group II (n = 9) there was no communication. There were two perioperative deaths (11%) one due to persistent cholangitis and the other to myocardial insufficiency both with one death in each group. The median survival (excluding perioperative deaths) was 5.6 months. Comparison of pre- and postoperative serum levels of bilirubin and alkaline phosphatase showed a significant decrease in each group, but no difference between the groups in the size of the reduction. Sixteen patients survived at least three months and the palliation was judged as excellent in eight, fair in five, and unchanged in three. These results demonstrate the effectiveness of biliary enteric bypass regardless of communication between the left and right biliary ductal systems.H. U. Baer, M. Rhyner, S. C. Stain, P. W.     Parallel transport in an entangled ring

    This paper defines a notion of parallel transport in a lattice of quantum particles, such that the transformation associated with each link of the lattice is determined by the quantum state of the two particles joined by that link. We focus particularly on a one-dimensional lattice--a ring--of entangled rebits, which are binary quantum objects confined to a real state space. We consider states of the ring that maximize the correlation between nearest neighbors, and show that some correlation must be sacrificed in order to have non-trivial parallel transport around the ring. An analogy is made with lattice gauge theory, in which non-trivial parallel transport around closed loops is associated with a reduction in the probability of the field configuration.     Charge Form Factor and Cluster Structure of 6^6Li Nucleus

    The charge form factor of 6{}^6Li nucleus is considered on the basis of its cluster structure. The charge density of 6{}^6Li is presented as a superposition of two terms. One of them is a folded density and the second one is a sum of 4{}^4He and the deuteron densities. Using the available experimental data for 4{}^4He and deuteron charge form factors, a good agreement of the calculations within the suggested scheme is obtained with the experimental data for the charge form factor of 6{}^6Li, including those in the region of large transferred momenta.Comment: 12 pages 5 figure

    The gravitational couplings of intrinsic spin are briefly reviewed. A consequence of the Dirac equation in the exterior gravitational field of a rotating mass is considered in detail, namely, the difference in the energy of a spin-1/2 particle polarized vertically up and down near the surface of a rotating body is ℏΩsin⁥Ξ\hbar\Omega\sin\theta. Here Ξ\theta is the latitude and Ω=2GJ/(c2R3)\Omega = 2GJ/(c^2 R^3), where JJ and RR are, respectively, the angular momentum and radius of the body.     Pharmacokinetics of oral busulphan in children with beta thalassaemia major undergoing allogeneic bone marrow transplantation

    The pharmacokinetics of busulphan were studied in 23 thalassaemic children undergoing BMT. Patients received busulphan at a dose of either 16 mg/kg with cyclophosphamide and ATG (Group A) or 600 mg/m2 (with cyclophosphamide alone) (Group B) in 16 divided doses every 6 h over 4 days. Busulphan levels were analyzed by a modified GC-MS method. The dose of busulphan/kg for patients in group B was 64% (range 56-71%) higher than that for patients in group A. The mean AUC, Css, Cmax and MRV were significantly higher in group B as compared with group A for both doses 1 and 13. There was no significant difference in Vd/F, T1/2 and Kel between the two groups. A significant decrease in AUC and Css was found between 1st and 13th doses in group B, but not in group A. The Cl/F values in group A were significantly higher than those in group B after dose 1, but not after dose 13. No increase in toxicity due to the higher dose of busulphan was noted. We conclude that busulphan at 600 mg/m2 results in much higher systemic exposure to the drug as compared to 16 mg/kg, without increase in toxicity in children with beta thalassaemia major
