Parameters that Affect the Color of Direct Restorative Resins
The effects of thickness, background color, specular reflection, and surface roughness on the color of five commercial restorative resins were studied by reflection spectrophotometry. As thickness increased, values of luminous reflectance and excitation purity increased for a black background but decreased for a white background. The Sizes of 1720 MHz OH Masers: VLBA and MERLIN Observations of the Supernova Remnants W44 and W28
We have used the NRAO Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) to image OH(1720 MHz)
masers in the supernova remnants W28 and W44 at a resolution of 40 mas. We also
used MERLIN to observe the same OH(1720 MHz) masers in W44 at a resolution of
290 x 165 mas. All the masers are resolved by these VLBA and MERLIN
observations. The measured sizes range from 50 to 180 mas and yield brightness
temperature estimates from 0.3--20 x 10**8 K. We investigate whether these
measured angular sizes are intrinsic and hence originate as a result of the
physical conditions in the supernova remnant shock, or whether they are scatter
broadened sizes produced by the turbulent ionized gas along the line of sight.
While the current data on the temporal and angular broadening of pulsars,
masers and extragalactic soures toward W44 and W28 can be understood in terms
of scattering, we cannot rule out that these large sizes are intrinsic. Recent
theoretical modeling by Lockett et al. suggests that the physical parameters in
the shocked region are indicative of densities and OH abundances which lead to
estimates of sizes as large as what we measure. If the sizes and structure are
intrinsic, then the OH(1720 MHz) masrs may be more like the OH(1612 MHz) masers
in circumstellar shells than OH masers associated with HII regions. At two
locations in W28 we observe the classical S-shapes in the Stokes V profiles
caused by Zeeman splitting and use it to infer magnetic fields of order 2

Data quality predicts care quality: findings from a national clinical audit
Background: Missing clinical outcome data are a common occurrence in longitudinal studies. Data quality in clinical audit is a particular cause for concern. The relationship between departmental levels of missing clinical outcome data and care quality is not known. We hypothesise that completeness of key outcome data in a national audit predicts departmental performance. Methods: The National Clinical Audit for Rheumatoid and Early Inflammatory Arthritis (NCAREIA) collected data on care of patients with suspected rheumatoid arthritis (RA) from early 2014 to late 2015. This observational cohort study collected data on patient demographics, departmental variables, service quality measures including time to treatment, and the key RA clinical outcome measure, disease activity at baseline, and 3 months follow-up. A mixed effects model was conducted to identify departments with high/low proportions of missing baseline disease activity data with the results plotted on a caterpillar graph. A mixed effects model was conducted to assess if missing baseline disease activity predicted prompt treatment. Results: Six thousand two hundred five patients with complete treatment time data and a diagnosis of RA were recruited from 136 departments. 34.3% had missing disease activity at baseline. Mixed effects modelling identified 13 departments with high levels of missing disease activity, with a cluster observed in the Northwest of England. Missing baseline disease activity was associated with not commencing treatment promptly in an adjusted mix effects model, odds ratio 0.50 (95% CI 0.41 to 0.61, p < 0.0001). Conclusions: We have shown that poor engagement in a national audit program correlates with the quality of care provided. Our findings support the use of data completeness as an additional service quality indicator
The Radial Extent and Warp of the Ionized Galactic Disk. I. A VLBA Survey of Extragalactic Sources Toward the Anticenter
We report multifrequency Very Long Baseline Array observations of twelve
active galactic nuclei seen toward the Galactic anticenter. All of the sources
are at |b| < 10 degrees and seven have |b| < 0.5 degrees. Our VLBA observations
can detect an enhancement in the angular broadening of these sources due to an
extended H II disk, if the orientation of the H II disk in the outer Galaxy is
similar to that of the H I disk. Such an extended H II disk is suggested by the
C IV absorption in a quasar's spectrum, the appearance of H I disks of nearby
spiral galaxies, and models of Ly-alpha cloud absorbers and the Galactic
fountain. We detect eleven of the twelve sources at one or more frequencies;
nine of the sources are compact and suitable for an angular broadening
analysis. A preliminary analysis of the observed angular diameters suggests
that the H II disk does not display considerable warping or flaring and does
not extend to large Galactocentric distances (R >~ 100 kpc). A companion paper
(Lazio & Cordes 1997) combines these observations with those in the literature

The Radial Extent and Warp of the Ionized Galactic Disk. II. A Likelihood Analysis of Radio-Wave Scattering Toward the Anticenter
We use radio-wave scattering data to constrain the distribution of ionized
gas in the outer Galaxy. Like previous models, our model for the H II disk
includes parameters for the radial scale length and scale height of the H II,
but we allow the H II disk to warp and flare. Our model also includes the
Perseus arm. We use a likelihood analysis on 11 extragalactic sources and 7
pulsars. Scattering in the Perseus arm is no more than 60% of the level
contributed by spiral arms in the inner Galaxy, equivalent to a 1 GHz
scattering diameter of 1.5 mas. Our analysis favors an unwarped, nonflaring
disk with a 1 kpc scale height, though this may reflect the non-uniform and
coarse coverage provided by the available data. The lack of a warp indicates
that VLBI observations near 1 GHz with an orbiting station having baseline
lengths of a few Earth diameters will not be affected by interstellar
scattering at Galactic latitudes |b| ~ 15 degrees. The radial scale length is
15--20 kpc, but the data cannot distinguish between a gradual decrease in the
electron density and a truncated distribution. We favor a truncated one,
because we associate the scattering with massive star formation, which is also
truncated near 20 kpc. The distribution of electron density turbulence
decreases more rapidly with Galactocentric distance than does the hydrogen
distribution. Alternate ionizing and turbulent agents---the intergalactic
ionizing flux and satellite galaxies passing through the disk---do not
contribute significantly to scattering. We cannot exclude the possibility that
a largely ionized, but quiescent disk extends to >~ 100 kpc, similar to that

Calculation of Spectral Degradation Due to Contaminant Films on Infrared and Optical Sensors
Molecular surface contaminants can cause degradation of optical systems, especially if the contaminants exhibit strong absorption bands in the region of interest. Different strategies for estimation of spectral degradation responses due to uniform films for various types of systems are reviewed. One tool for calculating the effects of contaminant film thickness on signal degradation in the mid IR region is the simulation program CALCRT. The CALCRT database will be reviewed to correlate spectral n and k values associated with specific classes of organic functional groups. Various schemes are also investigated to estimate the spectral degradation in the UV-Vis region. Experimental measurements of reflectance changes in the IR to UV-Vis regions due to specific contaminants will be compared. Approaches for estimating changes in thermal emissivity and solar absorptivity will also be discussed
On the Enhanced Interstellar Scattering Toward B1849+005
(Abridged) This paper reports new Very Large Array (VLA) and Very Long
Baseline Array (VLBA) observations of the extragalactic source B1849+005 at
frequencies between 0.33 and 15 GHz and the re-analysis of archival VLA
observations at 0.33, 1.5, and 4.9 GHz. The structure of this source is complex
but interstellar scattering dominates the structure of the central component at
least to 15 GHz. An analysis of the phase structure functions of the
interferometric visibilities shows the density fluctuations along this line of
sight to be anisotropic (axial ratio = 1.3) with a frequency-independent
position angle, and having an inner scale of roughly a few hundred kilometers.
The anisotropies occur on length scales of order 10^{15} cm (D/5 kpc), which
within the context of certain magnetohydrodynamic turbulence theories indicates
the length scale on which the kinetic and magnetic energy densities are
comparable. A conservative upper limit on the velocity of the scattering
material is 1800 km/s. In the 0.33 GHz field of view, there are a number of
other sources that might also be heavily scattered. Both B1849+005 and PSR
B1849+00 are highly scattered, and they are separated by only 13'. If the lines
of sight are affected by the same ``clump'' of scattering material, it must be
at least 2.3 kpc distant. However, a detailed attempt to account for the
scattering observables toward these sources does not produce a self-consistent
set of parameters for such a clump. A clump of H\alpha emission, possibly
associated with the H II region G33.418-0.004, lies between these two lines of
sight, but it seems unable to account for all of the required excess

consequence of the Dirac equation in the exterior gravitational field of a
rotating mass is considered in detail, namely, the difference in the energy of
a spin-1/2 particle polarized vertically up and down near the surface of a

Effects of Cement Bases on the Stresses and Deflections in Composite Restorations
A model was used to show that tensile and shear stresses can occur in sufficient magnitude to cause failure in a cement base supporting a composite material in a posterior Class I restoration.
