Beyond narrative: sound design as dramaturgy in contemporary performance

Autobiographical performance is often characterised by a linguistic approach to storytelling. This paper presents discoveries from a practice-led research inquiry into the mediated translation of narrative elements within the making of autobiographical performance Train Tracks and Rooftops. Specifically, it presents the way sonic texts emerged within the process of translating away from narrative form. The paper sets out the technical aspects of the process and critiques the shift in meaning that comes from an understanding of sound dramaturgy and sound as performance architecture. The experience of the maker/performers\u27 relationship to their live and mediated voice is discussed

Presents//presence: Telematics, performance and embodiment

Of giving and receiving // Of giving and taking // Of exchangesReciprocity // Mutuality // ExpectationsA performance of liveness in which the presence of the performer is interrogated.Drawing on Dan Graham\u27s (1974) Two Consciousness Project, Presents//Presence plays on Object = Space relationships. Engaging with contemporary notions of thinking and consciousness, the performance plays with time - the here and now, the passage of time, time zones, and timing.Lovers. An anniversary. Fine Dining. Distance. Skype.Presents disrupt subject positions of audience, of performer; something happens while we are waiting for something else to happen. Through the use portable computers and hand-held (smart) devices for the capture and \u27projection\u27 of action in real time, the exploration sets out to engage with notions live and remote, absence and presence, the play of embodied transmission and live performance and the perception of absence.Through a simulation of the simultaneous presences (performances) of performers Magda Miranda and Rea Dennis, Presents//Presence is a performative event that (re) activates live/d moments in the lives of the artists. Such presence characterizes computer time – “a permanent present, an unbounded, timeless intensity” (Virilio in Dixon 90). Such presence could also be said to characterize the intra-subjective experience of intimacy. The piece draws on the languages of live theatre, elements of autobiographical performance, inter- and intra-subjective perception, and an understanding of time as a spatial metaphor. This paper reports on the performance event Presents//Presence. In it, we outline the narrative and structural anchors that frame the piece and discuss some of the theoretical threads informing the research. The paper is accompanied by a recording of the performance that was delivered to a live audience at University of South Wales, Cardiff during the Remote Encounters conference in April 2013.<br /

Probing a cosmological model with a Λ=Λ0+3βH2\Lambda = \Lambda_0 + 3\beta H^2 decaying-vacuum

In this work we study the evolution of matter-density perturbations for an arbitrary Λ(t)\Lambda(t) model, and specialize our analysis to the particular phenomenological law Λ=Λ0+3βH2\Lambda = \Lambda_0 + 3\beta H^2. We study the evolution of the cosmic star formation rate in this particular dark energy scenario and, by constraining the β\beta parameter using both the age of the universe and the cosmic star formation rate curve, we show that it leads to a reasonable physical model for β≲0.1\beta\lesssim 0.1.Comment: Published in Physical Review

Managing Motorways and Urban Arterials in Australia: Country Report for Australia

AbstractAustralian States have been investing heavily in managed motorway. It was acknowledged some time ago that the motorways that had slow moving congested traffic caused a considerable loss of value to the community. The concept of Productivity was applied to Motorways and since become a key performance indicator used to rate different motorway systems. The approach to motorway management has been based on established practices overseas although different algorithms are being developed in Australia and subsequently evaluated. This paper describes the processes used by Australian States to manage motorways and it describes the current research into new techniques. The management of motorways cannot be undertaken without consideration of the urban arterial network. It is therefore important to see the network as a whole noting that drivers tend to change their routes so that both the motorways and the arterial work in unison to provide the level of service to the user. It is therefore important that the performance of the arterial road system be maximised. The paper outlines some of the research that is directed at maximising the arterial road, using detectors on the departure side of signalized intersections to evaluating the potential for significant improvement in signal re-timing.Finally the paper will outline the use of the Highway Capacity Manual in Australian traffic engineering practices. It should be understood that Australia has used SIDRA for intersection analysis for some time and although many of the concepts of the HCM are used in SIDRA, it contains many elements and calibration factors that are peculiar to Australia

An Extended Nomenclature for Mammalian V-ATPase Subunit Genes and Splice Variants

Get PDF
The vacuolar-type H+-ATPase (V-ATPase) is a multisubunit proton pump that is involved in both intra- and extracellular acidification processes throughout the body. Multiple homologs and splice variants of V-ATPase subunits are thought to explain its varied spatial and temporal expression pattern in different cell types. Recently subunit nomenclature was standardized with a total of 22 subunit variants identified. However this standardization did not accommodate the existence of splice variants and is therefore incomplete. Thus, we propose here an extension of subunit nomenclature along with a literature and sequence database scan for additional V-ATPase subunits. An additional 17 variants were pulled from a literature search while 4 uncharacterized potential subunit variants were found in sequence databases. These findings have been integrated with the current V-ATPase knowledge base to create a new V-ATPase subunit catalogue. It is envisioned this catalogue will form a new platform on which future studies into tissue- and organelle-specific V-ATPase expression, localization and function can be based

Observational Study of the Multistructured Planetary Nebula NGC 7354

We present an observational study of the planetary nebula (PN) NGC 7354 consisting of narrowband Halpha and [NII]6584 imaging as well as low- and high-dispersion long-slit spectroscopy and VLA-D radio continuum. According to our imaging and spectroscopic data, NGC 7354 has four main structures: a quite round outer shell and an elliptical inner shell, a collection of low-excitation bright knots roughly concentrated on the equatorial region of the nebula, and two symmetrical jet-like features, not aligned either with the shells' axes, or with each other. We have obtained physical parameters like electron temperature and electron density as well as ionic and elemental abundances for these different structures. Electron temperature and electron density slightly vary throughout the nebula. The local extinction coefficient c_Hbeta shows an increasing gradient from south to north and a decreasing gradient from east to west consistent with the number of equatorial bright knots present in each direction. Abundance values show slight internal variations but most of them are within the estimated uncertainties. In general, abundance values are in good agreement with the ones expected for PNe. Radio continuum data are consistent with optically thin thermal emission. We have used the interactive three-dimensional modeling tool SHAPE to reproduce the observed morphokinematic structures in NGC 7354 with different geometrical components. Our SHAPE model is in very good agreement with our imaging and spectroscopic observations. Finally, after modeling NGC 7354 with SHAPE, we suggest a possible scenario for the formation of the nebula.Comment: Accepted for publication in AJ, 12 pages, 8 figure
