    Atividade anti fúngica do α-terpinen sobre Candida albicans

    Objetivo: avaliar a atividade antifúngica do α- terpinen sobre culturas planctonicas e biofi lme de Candida albicans. Material e Métodos: Primeiramente, foi determinada a Concentração Inibitória Mínima (CIM) e a Concentração Fungicida Mínima (CFM) do α-terpinen sobre microrganismos planctônicos. A Nistatina foi utilizada como controle positivo. Biofi lme de Candida albicans foi desenvolvido e, após o tratamento com diferentes concentrações de α-terpinen, foi quantifi cado em UFC/mL, além da atividade metabólica das células ser avaliada por XTT. Resultados: a menor concentração capaz de inibir o crescimento (CIM) foi 0,2 % para o α-terpinen e 4 μg/mL para a Nistatina. Na CIM, os resultados mostraram que a partir da concentração 0,05 % de α-terpinen e 2 μg/mL de Nistatina houve diminuição de C.albicans quando comparado ao controle. A CFM foi para α-terpinen 0,2 % e Nistatina 8 μg/mL. Na quantifi cação as concentrações efi cazes foram de α-terpinen (0,1%) e Nistatina (128μg/mL), e no teste do XTT, observou-se que α –terpinen (0,1%) e Nistatina (256μg/mL) diminuem a viabilidade quando comparado com o controle. Conclusão: Assim, pode-se afi rmar que α-terpineol pode ser uma alternativa para tratamento de infecções fúngicas

    Low iodine diet does not improve the efficacy of radioiodine for the treatment of Graves' disease

    ABSTRACT Objective: Consuming a low-iodine diet (LID) is a widely accepted practice before administering radioiodine ( 131 I) to evaluate and to treat thyroid disease. Although this procedure is well established for the management of patients with differentiated thyroid cancer, its use in patients with benign disease is unclear. So, we aimed to evaluate the influence of a LID on the outcome in patients with Graves' disease (GD) treated with 131 I. Subjects and methods: We evaluated 67 patients with GD who were divided into 2 groups: one group (n = 31) consumed a LID for 1-2 weeks, and the second group (n = 36) was instructed to maintain a regular diet (RD). Results: The LID group experienced a 23% decrease in urinary iodine after 1 week on the diet and a significant 42% decrease after 2 weeks on the diet. The majority (53%) of the patients in the LID group had urinary iodine levels that were consistent with deficient iodine intake. However, there was no difference in the rate of hyperthyroidism's cure between the LID and the RD groups 6 months after 131 I therapy. Furthermore, the therapeutic efficacy did not differ in patients with varying degrees of sufficient iodine intake (corresponding urinary iodine levels: < 10 μg/dL is deficient; 10-29.9 μg/dL is sufficient; and > 30 μg/dL is excessive). Conclusion: In the present study, we demonstrated that although a LID decreased urinary iodine levels, those levels corresponding with sufficient or a mild excess in iodine intake did not compromise the therapeutic efficacy of 131 I for the treatment of GD.     Toward a Surrogate Marker of Malaria Exposure: Modeling Longitudinal Antibody Measurements under Outbreak Conditions

    Background: Biomarkers of exposure to Plasmodium falciparum would be a useful tool for the assessment of malaria burden and analysis of intervention and epidemiological studies. Antibodies to pre-erythrocytic antigens represent potential surrogates of exposure. Methods and Findings: In an outbreak cohort of U.S. Marines deployed to Liberia, we modeled pre- and post-deployment IgG against P. falciparum sporozoites by immunofluorescence antibody test, and both IgG and IgM against the P. falciparum circumsporozoite protein by enzyme-linked immunosorbant assay. Modeling seroconversion thresholds by a fixed ratio, linear regression or nonlinear regression produced sensitivity for identification of exposed U.S. Marines between 58-70% and specificities between 87-97%, compared with malaria-naïve U.S. volunteers. Exposure was predicted in 30-45% of the cohort. Conclusion: Each of the three models tested has merits in different studies, but further development and validation in endemic populations is required. Overall, these models provide support for an antibody-based surrogate marker of exposure to malaria

    Pesquisas e reflexões sobre ensino, história e epistemologia das Ciências da Terra têm sido desenvolvidas, em grande parte, intimamente associadas às práticas docentes dos professores/pesquisadores universitários. Nessa mesma perspectiva, buscamos neste trabalho compreender relações que os estudantes de licenciatura em Geografia estabelecem entre o conteúdo/forma trabalhado numa disciplina universitária e o conteúdo/forma profissional, ou seja, pensado na relação com a escola básica, com o tornar-se professor. As respostas dos estudantes a uma questão por nós formulada indicou como eles representaram uma das atividades desenvolvidas na disciplina na relação com seu imaginário sobre ser professor da educação básica. As análises mostraram também que essas significações se produzem de maneiras muito diferentes entre os estudantes, fazendo intervir no imaginário a partir do qual essas significações se produzem, aspectos da memória escolar de alguns estudantes e da maneira como representam o conhecimento escolar e as práticas de ensino na disciplina Geografia da educação básica. As análises mostraram que a atividade não é transparente quanto ao que seja o "conteúdo" de ensino da atividade, posto que essas significações são o trabalho de diferentes memórias discursivas, implicado em diferentes posições-aluno. Este estudo aponta para a importância de considerar e para a possibilidade de trabalhar com os imaginários dos futuros professores sobre ensino na relação que estabelecem com os conteúdos/formas em suas disciplinas científicas universitárias.<br>Research and studies about teaching, history and epistemology of Earth Sciences have been developed strongly associated with undergraduate teachers/researchers teaching practices. At the same way, in this work we aimed at comprehending the relationships that geography undergraduate students establish between the content/shape developed within a scientific undergraduate discipline and the professional content/shape, i.e., analysed in relation to elementary school, and becoming a teacher. The students' answers to a question we made indicated how they represented an activi-ty developed at that course in relation to their imaginary about being an elementary school teacher. The analysis also showed that the meanings were produced in different ways by the students, making them interfere in imaginaries from which those meanings were produced, about aspects of their memory as basic school students and the way they represent their knowledge and teaching practices of the discipline Geography at elementary school. The analysis showed that the activity is not transparent about its teaching content, because those meanings were the product of different discursive memories, related to different student-positions. This study points out the importance to consider and the possibility to work with future teachers imaginaries about teaching in relations that they establish to the content/shapes of their undergraduate scientific disciplines

    A search for heavy neutral leptons (HNLs) of Majorana or Dirac type using proton-proton collision data at s \sqrt{s} = 13 TeV is presented. The data were collected by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb1^{−1}. Events with three charged leptons (electrons, muons, and hadronically decaying tau leptons) are selected, corresponding to HNL production in association with a charged lepton and decay of the HNL to two charged leptons and a standard model (SM) neutrino. The search is performed for HNL masses between 10 GeV and 1.5 TeV. No evidence for an HNL signal is observed in data. Upper limits at 95% confidence level are found for the squared coupling strength of the HNL to SM neutrinos, considering exclusive coupling of the HNL to a single SM neutrino generation, for both Majorana and Dirac HNLs. The limits exceed previously achieved experimental constraints for a wide range of HNL masses, and the limits on tau neutrino coupling scenarios with HNL masses above the W boson mass are presented for the first time.[graphic not available: see fulltext
