Photonic lattices of coaxial cables: flat bands and artificial magnetic fields

We propose the use of networks of standard, commercially-available coaxial cables as a platform to realize photonic lattice models. As a specific example, we consider a brick wall lattice formed from coaxial cables and T-shaped connectors. We calculate the dispersion of photonic Bloch waves in the lattice: we find a repeated family of three bands, which include a flat band and two Dirac points. We then demonstrate a method to displace the Dirac points, leading to an induced artificial gauge field, and a method to energetically isolate the flat band. Our results readily suggest that the interplay of nonlinearities and non-trivial topology are a natural avenue to explore in order to unlock the full power of this proposed platform

Broadbent, H.J., Osborne, T., Rea, M., Peng, A., Mareschal, D., and Kirkham, N.Z. Multisensory information has been shown to facilitate learning (Bahrick & Lickliter, 2000; Broadbent, White, Mareschal, & Kirkham, 2017; Jordan & Baker, 2011; Shams & Seitz, 2008). However, although research has examined the modulating effect of unisensory and multisensory distractors on multisensory processing, the extent to which a concurrent unisensory or multisensory cognitive load task would interfere with or support multisensory learning remains unclear. This study examined the role of concurrent task modality on incidental category learning in 6- to 10-year-olds. Participants were engaged in a multisensory learning task whilst also performing either a unisensory (visual or auditory only) or multisensory (audiovisual) concurrent task (CT). We found that engaging in an auditory CT led to poorer performance on incidental category learning compared with an audiovisual or visual CT, across groups. In 6-year-olds, category test performance was at chance in the auditory-only CT condition, suggesting auditory concurrent tasks may interfere with learning in younger children, but the addition of visual information may serve to focus attention. These findings provide novel insight into the use of multisensory concurrent information on incidental learning. Implications for the deployment of multisensory learning tasks within education across development and developmental changes in modality dominance and ability to switch flexibly across modalities are discussed. Cooperative Functionalities in Porous Nanoparticles for Seeking Extracellular DNA and Targeting Pathogenic Biofilms via Photodynamic Therapy

Many pathogenic bacteria are getting more and more resistant against antibiotic treatment and even become up to 1.000× times more resilient in the form of a mature biofilm. Thus, one is currently prospecting for alternative methods for treating microbial infections, and photodynamic therapy is a highly promising approach by creating so-called reactive oxygen species (ROS) produced by a photosensitizer (PS) upon irradiation with light. Unfortunately, the unspecific activity of ROS is also problematic as they are harmful to healthy tissue as well. Notably, one knows that uncontrolled existence of ROS in the body plays a major role in the development of cancer. These arguments create need for advanced theranostic materials which are capable of autonomous targeting and detecting the existence of a biofilm, followed by specific activation to combat the infection. The focus of this contribution is on mesoporous organosilica colloids functionalized by orthogonal and localized click-chemistry methods. The external zone of the particles is modified by a dye of the Hoechst family. The particles readily enter a mature biofilm where adduct formation with extracellular DNA and a resulting change in the fluorescence signal occurs, but they cannot cross cellular membranes such as in healthy tissue. A different dye suitable for photochemical ROS generation, Acridine Orange, is covalently linked to the surfaces of the internal mesopores. The spectral overlap between the emission of Hoechst with the absorption band of Acridine Orange facilitates energy transfer by Förster resonance with up to 88% efficiency. The theranostic properties of the materials including viability studies were investigated in vitro on mature biofilms formed by Pseudomonas fluorescens and prove the high efficacy

Antibacterial properties and abrasion-stability: Development of a novel silver-compound material for orthodontic bracket application

Purpose: Bacteria-induced white spot lesions are a common side effect of modern orthodontic treatment. Therefore, there is a need for novel orthodontic bracket materials with antibacterial properties that also resist long-term abrasion. The aim of this study was to investigate the abrasion-stable antibacterial properties of a newly developed, thoroughly silver-infiltrated material for orthodontic bracket application in an in situ experiment. Methods: To generate the novel material, silver was vacuum-infiltrated into a sintered porous tungsten matrix. A tooth brushing simulation machine was used to perform abrasion equal to 2 years of tooth brushing. The material was characterized by energy dispersive X‑ray (EDX) analysis and roughness measurement. To test for antibacterial properties in situ, individual occlusal splints equipped with specimens were worn intraorally by 12 periodontal healthy patients for 48 h. After fluorescence staining, the quantitative biofilm volume and live/dead distribution of the initial biofilm formation were analyzed by confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM). Results: Silver was infiltrated homogeneously throughout the tungsten matrix. Toothbrush abrasion only slightly reduced the material’s thickness similar to conventional stainless steel bracket material and did not alter surface roughness. The new silver-modified material showed significantly reduced biofilm accumulation in situ. The effect was maintained even after abrasion. Conclusion: A promising, novel silver-infiltrated abrasion-stable material for use as orthodontic brackets, which also exhibit strong antibacterial properties on in situ grown oral biofilms, was developed. The strong antibacterial properties were maintained even after surface abrasion simulated with long-term toothbrushing

Development of Fluorinated Analogues of Perhexiline with Improved Pharmacokinetic Properties and Retained Efficacy

We designed and synthesized perhexiline analogues that have the same therapeutic profile as the parent cardiovascular drug but lacking its metabolic liability associated with CYP2D6 metabolism. Cycloalkyl perhexiline analogues 6a–j were found to be unsuitable for further development, as they retained a pharmacokinetic profile very similar to that shown by the parent compound. Multistep synthesis of perhexiline analogues incorporating fluorine atoms onto the cyclohexyl ring(s) provided a range of different fluoroperhexiline analogues. Of these, analogues 50 (4,4-gem-difluoro) and 62 (4,4,4′,4′-tetrafluoro) were highly stable and showed greatly reduced susceptibility to CYP2D6-mediated metabolism. In vitro efficacy studies demonstrated that a number of derivatives retained acceptable potency against CPT-1. Having the best balance of properties, 50 was selected for further evaluation. Like perhexiline, it was shown to be selectively concentrated in the myocardium and, using the Langendorff model, to be effective in improving both cardiac contractility and relaxation when challenged with high fat buffer

Combining biochar with low rate of chemical fertiliser boosts maize biomass yield, regardless of tillage system, under humid conditions

Biochar application to soils increases biomass and crop yields, especially with rates higher than 100 t ha−1. Yet, there is limited knowledge on the combined effect of biochar and chemical fertiliser under different tillage systems. The objective of this study is to investigate the effect of maize-cob biochar (BC) (rates of 5 and 10 t ha−1) combined with chemical fertiliser micro-dosing (MD) at a rate of 25% of the recommended quantity on total shoot dry matter (DM) and plant height of maize cultivated under flat (F) and tied-ridge (R) practices during a humid season in Tanzania. The results indicate that combining 5 t ha−1 BC with 25% MD increases DM at harvest by 83% (4.16 t ha−1) compared to the control (2.27 t ha−1) and was in the same range as the DM obtained from the treatment with the recommended fertiliser rate (100% FD). The treatments with single applications of 25% MD, 5 t ha−1 BC, and 10 t ha−1 BC only tended to exceed the control of DM yield. Therefore, we recommend that small-scale farmers aiming at DM for livestock or grain yield with limited access to chemical fertilisers to combine biochar with 25% MD, rather than applying biochar or low chemical fertiliser rates alone
