An approximation algorithm for feedback vertex sets in tournaments

    Get PDF
We obtain a necessary and sufficient condition in terms of forbidden structures for tournaments to possess the min-max relation on packing and covering directed cycles, together with strongly polynomial time algorithms for the feedback vertex set problem and the cycle packing problem in this class of tournaments. Applying the local ratio technique of Bar-Yehuda and Even to the forbidden structures, we find a 2.5-approximation polynomial time algorithm for the feedback vertex set problem in any tournament.published_or_final_versio

Stability and inviscid limit of the 3D anisotropic MHD system near a background magnetic field with mixed fractional partial dissipation

A main result of this paper establishes the global stability of the three-dimensional MHD equations near a background magnetic field with mixed fractional partial dissipation with α,β(12,1]\alpha, \beta\in(\frac{1}{2}, 1]. Namely, the velocity equations involve dissipation (Λ12α+Λ22α+σΛ32α)u(\Lambda_1^{2\alpha} + \Lambda_2^{2\alpha}+\sigma \Lambda_3^{2\alpha})u with the case σ=1\sigma=1 and σ=0\sigma=0. The magnetic equations without partial magnetic diffusion Λi2βbi\Lambda_i^{2\beta} b_i but with the diffusion (Δ)βb(-\Delta)^\beta b, where Λis(s>0)\Lambda_i^{s} (s>0) with i=1,2,3i=1, 2, 3 are the directional fractional operators. Then we focus on the vanishing vertical kinematic viscosity coefficient limit of the MHD system with the case σ=1\sigma=1 to the case σ=0\sigma=0. The convergent result is obtained in the sense of H1H^1-norm

    Totally balanced combinatorial optimization games

    Get PDF
Combinatorial optimization games deal with cooperative games for which the value of every subset of players is obtained by solving a combinatorial optimization problem on the resources collectively owned by this subset. A solution of the game is in the core if no subset of players is able to gain advantage by breaking away from this collective decision of all players. The game is totally balanced if and only if the core is non-empty for every induced subgame of it. We study the total balancedness of several combinatorial optimization games in this paper. For a class of the partition game [5], we have a complete characterization for the total balancedness. For the packing and covering games [3], we completely clarify the relationship between the related primal/dual linear programs for the corresponding games to be totally balanced. Our work opens up the question of fully characterizing the combinatorial structures of totally balanced packing and covering games, for which we present some interesting examples: the totally balanced matching, vertex cover, and minimum coloring games.link_to_subscribed_fulltex

Effects of transgenic Cry1Ac + CpTI cotton on non-target mealybug pest Ferrisia virgata and its predator Cryptolaemus montrouzieri

Recently, several invasive mealybugs (Hemiptera: Pseudococcidae) have rapidly spread to Asia and have become a serious threat to the production of cotton including transgenic cotton. Thus far, studies have mainly focused on the effects of mealybugs on non-transgenic cotton, without fully considering their effects on transgenic cotton and trophic interactions. Therefore, investigating the potential effects of mealybugs on transgenic cotton and their key natural enemies is vitally important. A first study on the effects of transgenic cotton on a non-target mealybug, Ferrisia virgata (Cockerell) (Hemiptera: Pseudococcidae) was performed by comparing its development, survival and body weight on transgenic cotton leaves expressing Cry1Ac (Bt toxin) + CpTI (Cowpea Trypsin Inhibitor) with those on its near-isogenic non-transgenic line. Furthermore, the development, survival, body weight, fecundity, adult longevity and feeding preference of the mealybug predator Cryptolaemus montrouzieri Mulsant (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) was assessed when fed F. virgata maintained on transgenic cotton. In order to investigate potential transfer of Cry1Ac and CpTI proteins via the food chain, protein levels in cotton leaves, mealybugs and ladybirds were quantified. Experimental results showed that F. virgata could infest this bivalent transgenic cotton. No significant differences were observed in the physiological parameters of the predator C. montrouzieri offered F. virgata reared on transgenic cotton or its near-isogenic line. Cry1Ac and CpTI proteins were detected in transgenic cotton leaves, but no detectable levels of both proteins were present in the mealybug or its predator when reared on transgenic cotton leaves. Our bioassays indicated that transgenic cotton poses a negligible risk to the predatory coccinellid C. montrouzieri via its prey, the mealybug F.virgata

Bridging the Gap between Laboratory and Field Experiments in American Eel Detection Using Transfer Learning and Convolutional Neural Network

    Get PDF
An automatic system that utilizes data analytics and machine learning to identify adult American eel in data obtained by imaging sonars is created in this study. Wavelet transform has been applied to de-noise the ARIS sonar data and a convolutional neural network model has been built to classify eels and non-eel objects. Because of the unbalanced amounts of data in laboratory and field experiments, a transfer learning strategy is implemented to fine-tune the convolutional neural network model so that it performs well for both the laboratory and field data. The proposed system can provide important information to develop mitigation strategies for safe passage of out-migrating eels at hydroelectric facilities
