Les années d’apprentissage des Annales Révolutionnaires (1908-1918)

Entre le passé radical et l’horizon communiste, voici les années d’apprentissage des Annales révolutionnaires. En rétrospective, des révolutions de gauche échouées et des expériences douloureuses de défaite de 1794, de 1830, de 1848, des Quarante-huitards déçus, des Communards tués ou exilés. En prospective : l’ère des grandes espérances, suscitées par la création de l’Union Soviétique et du Comintern.L’article présente quelques perspectives historiographiques, d’abord de longue et de moyenne durée du dernier quart du dix-neuvième siècle ; il analyse ensuite le profil des Annales révolutionnaires parmi d’autres revues, la méthode historique contemporaine et les idoles de l’historien. Pour conclure, il présente quelques mots sur l’outillage conceptuel et les mots qui manquent.Between the radical past and the communist horizon were years of apprenticeship for theAnnales Révolutionnaires. The revolutions of the Left had failed; there were the painful experiences of defeat in 1794, 1830, and 1848, the forty-eighters disappointed, the Communards killed or exiled. The future would be an era of great hopes, generated by the creation of the Soviet Union and the Comitern.This article offers some historiographical perspectives, first in the long and middle « duree » of the last quarter of the nineteenth century; it then analyzes the profile of theAnnales Révolutionnaires among other journals, contemporary historical methodology, and the historian’s idols. The article concludes with a few remarks about conceptual framework

Una comparación: la vida política de Simon Stevin y Justo Lipsio. Conceptos en (neo)latín y en lengua vernácula a finales del siglo XVI

El famoso científico Simon Stevin escribió un fascinante tratado titulado Het Burgherlick Leven-Vita politica (Leiden, 1590), unos meses después de la publicación por el mismo publicista del famoso Politicorum sive civilis doctrinae libri sex de Lipsius. Con el objetivo de explicar la vida política de los ciudadanos de los Países Bajos, Stevin utilizó la lengua vernácula al tiempo que atacó el uso del (neo)latín por los humanistas. Stevin hubo de crear nuevas palabras en holandés a fin de traducir los conceptos políticos latinos. Asimismo, criticó el modo de razonar por medio de la citación de autores clásicos de los humanistas, proponiendo un modo de argumentación deductivo análogo al practicado por los matemáticos (more mathematico)

Real-time quantification and display of skin radiation during coronary angiography and intervention

BACKGROUND: Radiographically guided investigations may be associated with excessive radiation exposure, which may cause skin injuries. The purpose of this study was to develop and test a system that measures in real time the dose applied to each 1-cm(2) area of skin, taking into account the movement of the x-ray source and changes in the beam characteristics. The goal of such a system is to help prevent high doses that might cause skin injury. METHODS AND RESULTS: The entrance point, beam size, and dose at the skin of the patient were calculated by use of the geometrical settings of gantry, investigation table, and x-ray beam and an ionization chamber. The data are displayed graphically. Three hundred twenty-two sequential cardiac investigations in adult patients were analyzed. The mean peak entrance dose per investigation was 0.475 Gy to a mean skin area of 8.2 cm(2). The cumulative KERMA-area product per investigation was 52.2 Gy/cm(2) (25.4 to 99.2 Gy/cm(2)), and the mean entrance beam size at the skin was 49.2 cm(2). Twenty-eight percent of the patients (90/322) received a maximum dose of 2 Gy. CONCLUSIONS: Monitoring of the dose distribution at the skin will alert the operator to the development of high-dose areas; by use of other gantry settings with nonoverlapping entrance fields, different generator settings, and extra collimation, skin lesion can be avoided

Hyperplasia of epithelium adjacent to transitional cell carcinoma can be induced by growth factors through paracrine pathways

Hyperplasia of transitional cell epithelium adjacent to human transitional cell carcinomas (TCC) is a common finding in pathology. This hyperplasia may be a precancerous aberration. Alternatively, it has been suggested that the hyperplasia is due to paracrine action of tumour-derived growth factors. In this study we tested the latter hypothesis using the mouse tumorigenic TCC cell line NUC-1. Transplantation of NUC-1 tumour cells into the urinary bladder submucosa of syngeneic mice in vivo induced hyperplasia of normal adjacent urothelium in all tested mice. Implantation of normal mouse bladder mucosa did not induce urothelial hyperplasia. In vitro, conditioned medium of NUC-1 cells induced the proliferation of the mouse urothelial cell line g/G, which closely resembles normal urothelial cells. This induction was inhibited by transforming growth factor β1 (TGFβ1). Similarly, TGFβ1 inhibited the fibroblast growth factor-1 (FGF-1) and FGF-2 induced proliferation of g/G cells. Chemico-physical examination, bioassays with conditioned media, and RNA analysis of NUC-1 cells revealed that these cells secreted a growth factor with FGF-like properties. These results indicate that epithelial hyperplasia surrounding carcinomas is not necessarily a precancerous aberration, but may result from direct paracrine action of tumour-derived growth factors
