    Get PDF
By creating a virtual learning environment for the “Construction of non-structural elements” Technical Architecture subject, various activities were adapted to the European Higher Education Area with the aim of promoting practices that would help students develop their skills and abilities through both group and individual work. The main aim was to determine which learning tools help to improve teaching quality and help how teaching work is managed. The process of implementing the platform and the degree of its success are described through teachers’ experiences and by the data gathered from surveys administered to the students involved. The results obtained indicate that the needs of the subject are best suited to workshop activities, as they foster students’ critical sense and increase the quality of the final document produced

Estimating the workload of a student adapted to the EHEA in the "Construction of non-structural elements" Technical Architecture subject

The new ECTS credit accumulation and transfer scheme, established for adaptation to the European Higher Education Area, entails changing from the old approach to a more student-centred learning approach, measuring the time students spend on study and encouraging independent learning and more active participation. Consequently, student workload includes the hours corresponding to attendance at lectures (theoretical and/or practical sessions), study, seminars, assignments, work experience or projects, and those required for the preparation and sitting of examinations and assessment tests. The aim of this research is to estimate the workload of a student in the third-year “Construction of non-structural elements” subject on the current Technical Architecture degree course (currently being phased out) and adapt it to the demands of the Building Engineering degree course. The descriptive and experimental methodology uses a survey-type tool to gather the data sought. The results obtained indicate the need for the length of course activities to be reconsidered so as to reduce student workload and adjust the time spent on activities to the established limits. The need is also detected to correct low class attendance so as to improve both teaching quality and academic results. This research is based on the findings of the Research Network on implementation of ECTS in the Technical Architecture subject "Building Non-Structural Elements", and was conducted within the context of the call for proposals issued by the "University Teaching Research Networks Project 2010-2011", supported by the Pro-Vice-Chancellor of Strategic Planning and Quality and the Institute of Education Sciences at the University of Alicante

This study presents the validation of a scale that was elaborated to assess maternal and paternal parenting styles according to the percep-tion of their adolescent children. The scale was applied to a sample composed by 848 adolescents aged from 12 to 17 years old, that also filled out the Youth Self Report, a life satisfaction scale and a substance use question-naire. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses revealed a six factors structure for maternal and also for paternal parenting style. These dimen-sions showed significant relationships with most of the measures of ado-lescent adjustment considered in the study. Comparisons between boys’ and girls’ perceptions of paternal and maternal parenting styles revealed that, in spite of the high agreement between both styles, mothers were scored higher than fathers in every dimension of parenting style.

AMMO-Prot: amine system project 3D-model finder

    Get PDF
BACKGROUND: Amines are biogenic amino acid derivatives, which play pleiotropic and very important yet complex roles in animal physiology. For many other relevant biomolecules, biochemical and molecular data are being accumulated, which need to be integrated in order to be effective in the advance of biological knowledge in the field. For this purpose, a multidisciplinary group has started an ontology-based system named the Amine System Project (ASP) for which amine-related information is the validation bench. RESULTS: In this paper, we describe the Ontology-Based Mediator developed in the Amine System Project (http://asp.uma.es) using the infrastructure of Semantic Directories, and how this system has been used to solve a case related to amine metabolism-related protein structures. CONCLUSIONS: This infrastructure is used to publish and manage not only ontologies and their relationships, but also metadata relating to the resources committed with the ontologies. The system developed is available at http://asp.uma.es/WebMediator

    Get PDF
Both national and international recommendations on positive parenting recognize the need for supporting families in their childrearing tasks, particularly in psychosocial-risk situations. These recommendations highlight local services as the best source to support families. In this paper, the Program for Promoting Positive Parenting in Polígono Sur (5P’s) is described. 5P’s is a psycho-educational and community initiative starting from the need for specific materials for vulnerable families because of: (1) their psychosocial profile, (2) their cultural values; (3) living in a neighborhood with at-risk conditions. The contents, the format and the evaluation design of the program are introduced. Strengths and future challenges are discussed
