    Extensible Performance-Aware Runtime Integrity Measurement

    Get PDF
Today\u27s interconnected world consists of a broad set of online activities including banking, shopping, managing health records, and social media while relying heavily on servers to manage extensive sets of data. However, stealthy rootkit attacks on this infrastructure have placed these servers at risk. Security researchers have proposed using an existing x86 CPU mode called System Management Mode (SMM) to search for rootkits from a hardware-protected, isolated, and privileged location. SMM has broad visibility into operating system resources including memory regions and CPU registers. However, the use of SMM for runtime integrity measurement mechanisms (SMM-RIMMs) would significantly expand the amount of CPU time spent away from operating system and hypervisor (host software) control, resulting in potentially serious system impacts. To be a candidate for production use, SMM RIMMs would need to be resilient, performant and extensible. We developed the EPA-RIMM architecture guided by the principles of extensibility, performance awareness, and effectiveness. EPA-RIMM incorporates a security check description mechanism that allows dynamic changes to the set of resources to be monitored. It minimizes system performance impacts by decomposing security checks into shorter tasks that can be independently scheduled over time. We present a performance methodology for SMM to quantify system impacts, as well as a simulator that allows for the evaluation of different methods of scheduling security inspections. Our SMM-based EPA-RIMM prototype leverages insights from the performance methodology to detect host software rootkits at reduced system impacts. EPA-RIMM demonstrates that SMM-based rootkit detection can be made performance-efficient and effective, providing a new tool for defense

    Get PDF
This paper presents an integer-based digital processor for the calculation of phase synchronization between two neural signals. It is based on the measurement of time periods between two consecutive minima. The simplicity of the approach allows for the use of elementary digital blocks, such as registers, counters, and adders. The processor, fabricated in a 0.18- μ m CMOS process, only occupies 0.05 mm 2 and consumes 15 nW from a 0.5 V supply voltage at a signal input rate of 1024 S/s. These low-area and low-power features make the proposed processor a valuable computing element in closed-loop neural prosthesis for the treatment of neural disorders, such as epilepsy, or for assessing the patterns of correlated activity in neural assemblies through the evaluation of functional connectivity maps.Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad TEC2016-80923-POffice of Naval Research (USA) N00014-19-1-215

This paper reports a low area, low power, integer-based digital processor for the calculation of phase synchronization between two neural signals. The processor calculates the phase-frequency content of a signal by identifying the specific time periods associated with two consecutive minima. The simplicity of this phase-frequency content identifier allows for the digital processor to utilize only basic digital blocks, such as registers, counters, adders and subtractors, without incorporating any complex multiplication and or division algorithms. In fact, the processor, fabricated in a 0.18μm CMOS process, only occupies an area of 0.0625μm2 and consumes 12.5nW from a 1.2V supply voltage when operated at 128kHz. These low-area, low-power features make the proposed processor a valuable computing element in closed loop neural prosthesis for the treatment of neural diseases, such as epilepsy, or for extracting functional connectivity maps between different recording sites in the brain.Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad TEC2016- 80923-

Control of the Cauchy problem on Hilbert spaces: A global approach via symbol criteria

Let AA and BB be invariant linear operators with respect to a decomposition {Hj}jN\{H_{j}\}_{j\in \mathbb{N}} of a Hilbert space H\mathcal{H} in subspaces of finite dimension. We give necessary and sufficient conditions for the controllability of the Cauchy problem ut=Au+Bv,u(0)=u0, u_t=Au+Bv,\,\,u(0)=u_0, in terms of the (global) matrix-valued symbols σA\sigma_A and σB\sigma_B of AA and B,B, respectively, associated to the decomposition {Hj}jN\{H_{j}\}_{j\in \mathbb{N}}. Then, we present some applications including the controllability of the Cauchy problem on compact manifolds for elliptic operators and the controllability of fractional diffusion models for H\"ormander sub-Laplacians on compact Lie groups. We also give conditions for the controllibility of wave and Schr\"odinger equations in these settings.Comment: 38 Page

Currently there are various ways to model cell behavior in a lab setting for testing and simulation. As more methods are developed, more is discovered about how dynamic cell culture reacts to different stimuli and environments. This proposal discusses the prospects of magnetic actuation as a method of dynamic cell culture manipulation and simulation. This proposal seeks to use the biocompatible, tunable magnetic-PLGA porous composite that is interfaced with a magnetic actuation system. This new system would act as an easier method of observing cell culture in various magnetically developed environments. In all, magnetic actuation of dynamic cell culture could serve as a more accurate, seamless way to control biological samples and investigate their reactions in an easily controlled environment. The investigation of this form of cell culture observation aims to provide an easily programmable system that can be altered for use in various sectors of medicine and astrobiology using magnetism and magnetic PLGA composites

Latin America is affected by citizen insecurity; street robberies are frequent. In Peru, this scenario is alarming; according to studies and reports presented by the authorities, it is estimated that a monthly average of 1,5348 robberies are reported every month. Lima, being the main capital, is exposed to a greater number of assaults, especially in young areas; because of this, in this research work, an IoT design was presented, which consists of a system of alarms implemented in specific areas where the complaint rate is higher. This alarm will be activated through a mobile application installed on the user’s smartphone, This way; the user can turn on the alarm in case they witnesses or is the victim of a robbery; the application will send an alert message to the nearest authorities to take action on the scare. The Scrum Methodology was used as a methodology because its framework is adapted to the needs of this research.Campus Lima Nort
