    First experimental demonstration of temporal hypertelescope operation with a laboratory prototype

    In this paper, we report the first experimental demonstration of a Temporal HyperTelescope (THT). Our breadboard including 8 telescopes is firstly tested in a manual cophasing configuration on a 1D object. The Point Spread Function (PSF) is measured and exhibits a dynamics in the range of 300. A quantitative analysis of the potential biases demonstrates that this limitation is related to the residual phase fluctuation on each interferometric arm. Secondly, an unbalanced binary star is imaged demonstrating the imaging capability of THT. In addition, 2D PSF is recorded even if the telescope array is not optimized for this purpose.Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 11 pages, 25 figure

    Defect study of GaInP/GaAs based heterojunction bipolar transistor emitter layer

    Defects in the emitter region of Ga0.51In0.49P/GaAs heterojunction bipolar transistors (HBTs) were investigated by means of deep-level transient spectroscopy. Both annealed (635 degreesC, 5 min) and as grown metalorganic chemical vapor deposition epitaxial wafers were investigated in this study, with an electron trap observed in the HBT emitter space-charge region from both wafers. The deep-level activation energy was determined to be 0.87+/-0.05 eV below the conduction band, the capture cross section 3x10(-14) cm(2) and the defect density of the order of 10(14) cm(-3). This defect was also found to be localized at the emitter-base interface

    Resonance Patterns of an Antidot Cluster: From Classical to Quantum Ballistics

    We explain the experimentally observed Aharonov-Bohm (AB) resonance patterns of an antidot cluster by means of quantum and classical simulations and Feynman path integral theory. We demonstrate that the observed behavior of the AB period signals the crossover from a low B regime which can be understood in terms of electrons following classical orbits to an inherently quantum high B regime where this classical picture and semiclassical theories based on it do not apply.Comment: 5 pages revtex + 2 postscript figure

    Measurements of permeability of saturated and unsaturated soils

    The management and engineering assessments of geotechnical assets within the national transportation inventory require an appropriate knowledge of permeability of saturated and unsaturated soils. Determination of the permeability of saturated soils can be carried out using direct measurements, whereas that of unsaturated soils is often made using indirect methods based on the soil water retention curve. In this study an attempt was made to develop a novel approach for measuring the saturated and unsaturated permeability of soils. The tests were conducted on 100 mm dia. reconstituted and compacted samples of glacial till. Suctions were generated by circulating low-humidity air through a slender sand column located at the centre of the samples. Measurements of suction were made by two tensiometers located radially at the base of the samples. The drying process was terminated when the observed suctions reached or approached the limiting capacity of the tensiometers (1500 kPa). Combinations of suction measurements and volumetric strains during the drying process were used to determine the permeability by adopting analytical solutions as applicable to a radial flow condition

    Extending the footprint record of Pareiasauromorpha to the Cisuralian : earlier appearance and wider palaeobiogeography of the group

    Pareiasauromorpha is one of the most important tetrapod groups of the Permian. Skeletal evidence suggests a late Kungurian origin in North America, whereas the majority of occurrences come from the Guadalupian and Lopingian of South Africa and Russia. However, Pareiasauromorpha footprints include the ichnogenus Pachypes, which is unknown from strata older than late Guadalupian. A revision of several Pachypes-like footprints from the Cisuralian-Guadalupian of Europe and North America confirm the occurrence of this ichnogenus and of the ichnospecies Pachypes ollieri comb. nov. beginning in the Artinskian. This is the earliest known occurrence of Pachypes and it coincides with the Artinskian reptile radiation. Based on a synapomorphy-based track-trackmaker correlation, P. ollieri can be attributed to nycteroleter pareiasauromorphs such as Macroleter. Therefore, the earliest occurrences of pareiasauromorph footprints precede by at least 10 myr the earliest occurrence of this group in the skeletal record. Moreover, the palaeobiogeography of the group is extended to the Cisuralian and Guadalupian of western Europe

    Distributionally robust L1-estimation in multiple linear regression

    Linear regression is one of the most important and widely used techniques in data analysis, for which a key step is the estimation of the unknown parameters. However, it is often carried out under the assumption that the full information of the error distribution is available. This is clearly unrealistic in practice. In this paper, we propose a distributionally robust formulation of L1-estimation (or the least absolute value estimation) problem, where the only knowledge on the error distribution is that it belongs to a well-defined ambiguity set. We then reformulate the estimation problem as a computationally tractable conic optimization problem by using duality theory. Finally, a numerical example is solved as a conic optimization problem to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach
