Symmetries in Fluctuations Far from Equilibrium
Fluctuations arise universally in Nature as a reflection of the discrete
microscopic world at the macroscopic level. Despite their apparent noisy
origin, fluctuations encode fundamental aspects of the physics of the system at
hand, crucial to understand irreversibility and nonequilibrium behavior. In
order to sustain a given fluctuation, a system traverses a precise optimal path
in phase space. Here we show that by demanding invariance of optimal paths
under symmetry transformations, new and general fluctuation relations valid
arbitrarily far from equilibrium are unveiled. This opens an unexplored route
toward a deeper understanding of nonequilibrium physics by bringing symmetry
principles to the realm of fluctuations. We illustrate this concept studying
symmetries of the current distribution out of equilibrium. In particular we
derive an isometric fluctuation relation which links in a strikingly simple
manner the probabilities of any pair of isometric current fluctuations. This
relation, which results from the time-reversibility of the dynamics, includes
as a particular instance the Gallavotti-Cohen fluctuation theorem in this
context but adds a completely new perspective on the high level of symmetry
imposed by time-reversibility on the statistics of nonequilibrium fluctuations.
The new symmetry implies remarkable hierarchies of equations for the current
cumulants and the nonlinear response coefficients, going far beyond Onsager's
reciprocity relations and Green-Kubo formulae. We confirm the validity of the
new symmetry relation in extensive numerical simulations, and suggest that the
idea of symmetry in fluctuations as invariance of optimal paths has
far-reaching consequences in diverse fields.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figure
Related Message Attacks to Public Key Encryption Schemes: Relations among Security Notions
Consider a scenario in which an adversary, attacking a certain public key encryption scheme, gains knowledge of several ciphertexts
which underlying plaintext are meaningfully related with a given target ciphertext. This kind of
related message attack has been proved
successful against several public key encryption schemes; widely
known is the Franklin-Reiter attack to RSA with low exponent and
its subsequent improvement by Coppersmith. However, to the best of
our knowledge no formal treatment of these type of attacks has to
date been done, and as a result, it has not been rigorously studied which of the ``standard\u27\u27 security notions
imply resilience to them.
We give formal definitions of several security
notions capturing the resistance to this kind of attacks. For
passive adversaries we prove that, for the case of
indistinguishability, security against related message attacks is
equivalent to standard CPA security. On the other hand,
one-wayness robust schemes in this sense can be seen as
strictly between OW-CPA and IND-CPA secure schemes.
Furthermore, we prove that the same holds for active (CCA)
adversaries
Effects of respiratory muscle training on respiratory efficiency and health-related quality of life in sedentary women with fibromyalgia: a randomised controlled trial
Objectives: Fibromyalgia syndrome (FM) is a complex disease that is mainly characterised by chronic pain, fatigue, and sleep disturbances and may be precipitated or worsened by many stressors. The aim of this study was to examine the effects of respiratory muscle training (RMT) on respiratory efficiency and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in women with FM.
Methods: A total of 30 women with FM were included in the intention to treat analyses: 15 were assigned to the RMT group and 15 to the control group. The intervention consisted of 12 weeks of RMT. The primary outcome was the change in pulmonary function assessed by global body plethysmography at 12 weeks compared with baseline. Secondary outcomes included changes of scores in HRQoL assessed by the Short Form 36 Health Survey-Portuguese version.
Results: The maximal inspiratory pressure (MIP) improved by 17.5% (p-value = .033), maximal expiratory pressure (MEP) improved 21.6% (p-value = 0.045) and maximum occlusion pressure (P0.1 max) increased 27.7% (p-value = 0.007). HRQoL improved in the dimensions of physical function, physical role, bodily pain and vitality (p-value <0.05).
Conclusions: RMT results in a significant improvement of respiratory efficiency and HRQoL after 12 weeks. RMT could be an effective therapy to enhance respiratory function and quality of life in women with FM
Group key exchange protocols withstanding ephemeral-key reveals
When a group key exchange protocol is executed, the session key is typically extracted from two types of secrets; long-term keys (for authentication) and freshly generated (often random) values. The leakage of this latter so-called ephemeral keys has been extensively analyzed in the 2-party case, yet very few works are concerned with it in the group setting. We provide a generic {group key exchange} construction that is strongly secure, meaning that the attacker is allowed to learn both long-term and ephemeral keys (but not both from the same participant, as this would trivially disclose the session key). Our design can be seen as a compiler, in the sense that it builds on a 2-party key exchange protocol which is strongly secure and transforms it into a strongly secure group key exchange protocol by adding only one extra round of communication. When applied to an existing 2-party protocol from Bergsma et al., the result is a 2-round group key exchange protocol which is strongly secure in the standard model, thus yielding the first construction with this property

Measurement and analysis of the acoustics of the Roman theatre of Segobriga (Spain)
Segobriga (Cuenca) was the capital of the Celtiberia region. The specular gypsum of its mines, used as glass in windows, was exported across the whole Empire through the port of Cartago Nova (Cartagena). Its Roman theatre has one of the best conserved cavea of Hispania, although there is no scaenae frons. Its construction dates back to the year 79 A.D. In this work, experimental results and analysis are presented of impulse responses and of the values of the monaural and binaural acoustic parameters recorded in situ. These results correspond to the source-receiver combinations of three positions of the source, located in the proscaenium(2), and in the orchestra (1), and of 19 reception points, distributed across the cavea, the proedria, and the proscaenium. This theatre features as part of one of the study cases of a research project that aims to evaluate and revalue the acoustics of the principal Roman theatres of Spain
Overeating, caloric restriction and mammographic density in Spanish women. DDM-Spain study
[EN] Objectives: Mammographic density (MD) is a strong risk factor for breast cancer. The present study evaluates the association between relative caloric intake and MD in Spanish women.
Study design: We conducted a cross-sectional study in which 3517 women were recruited from seven breast cancer screening centers. MD was measured by an experienced radiologist using craniocaudal mammography and Boyd's semi-quantitative scale. Information was collected through an epidemiological survey. Predicted calories were calculated using linear regression models, including the basal metabolic rate and physical activity as explanatory variables. Overeating and caloric restriction were defined taking into account the 99% confidence interval of the predicted value. Odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (95%CI) were estimated using center-specific mixed ordinal logistic regression models, adjusted for age, menopausal status, body mass index, parity, tobacco use, family history of breast cancer, previous biopsies, age at menarche and adherence to a Western diet.
Main outcome measure: Mammographic density.
Results: Those women with an excessive caloric intake ( > 40% above predicted) presented higher MD (OR = 1.41, 95%CI = 0.97-2.03; p = 0.070). For every 20% increase in relative caloric consumption the probability of having higher MD increased by 5% (OR = 1.05, 95%CI = 0.98-1.14; p = 0.178), not observing differences between the categories of explanatory variables. Caloric restriction was not associated with MD in our study.
Conclusions: This is the first study exploring the association between MD and the effect of caloric deficit or excessive caloric consumption according to the energy requirements of each woman. Although caloric restriction does not seem to affect breast density, a caloric intake above predicted levels seems to increase this phenotypeThis study was supported by the Research Grant FIS PI060386 from Spanish Public Health Research Fund (Fondo de Investigacion Sanitaria); the Carlos III Institute of Health (Institute de Salud Carlos III)PI15CIII/0029 and PI15CIII/00013; the EPY 1306/06Collaboration Agreement between Astra-Zeneca and the Carlos III Institute of Health; and a grant from the Spanish Federation of Breast Cancer Patients (FECMA EPY 1169/10).Del Pozo, MDP.; Castelló, A.; Vidal, C.; Salas -Trejo, D.; Sanchez Contador, C.; Pedraz-Pingarrón, C.; Moreno, MP.... Influence of Neospora caninum intra-specific variability in the outcome of infection in a pregnant BALB/c mouse model
Previous assays in pregnant animals have demonstrated the effect of different host factors and timing of infection on the outcome of neosporosis during pregnancy. However, the influence of Neospora caninum isolate itself has been poorly investigated. Here, we compared the effects on clinical outcome and vertical transmission observed in a pregnant mouse model following infection with 10 different N. caninum isolates. The isolates in our study included the Nc-Liv isolate and nine N. caninum isolates obtained from calves. Female BALB/c mice were inoculated with 2 × 106 tachyzoites at day 7 of pregnancy. Morbidity and mortality, in both dams and offspring during the course of infection, and transmission to progeny at day 30 postpartum were evaluated. The serum IgG1 and IgG2a production in dams were also examined. All dams showed elevated IgG1 and IgG2a responses, confirming N. caninum infection, although signs of disease were only exhibited in dams infected with 4 of the 10 isolates (Nc-Spain 4H, Nc-Spain 5H, Nc-Spain 7 and Nc-Liv). In neonates, clinical signs were observed in all N. caninum-infected groups, and neonatal mortality rates varied from greater than 95% with the isolates mentioned above to less than 32.5% with the other isolates. Vertical transmission rates, as assessed by parasite PCR-detection in neonate brains, also varied from 50% to 100% according to the isolate implicated. These results confirm the wide pathogenic and transmission variability of N. caninum. The intra-specific variability observed herein could help us explain the differences in the outcome of the infection in the natural host
