Virtual Flight Demonstration of the Stratospheric Dual-Aircraft Platform
A baseline configuration for the dual-aircraft platform (DAP) concept is described and evaluated in a physics-based flight dynamics simulations for two month-long missions as a communications relay in the lower stratosphere above central Florida. The DAP features two unmanned aerial vehicles connected via a long adjustable cable which effectively sail back-and-forth using wind velocity gradients and solar energy. Detailed atmospheric profiles in the vicinity of 60,000-ft derived from archived data measured by the 50-Mhz Doppler Radar Wind Profiler at Cape Canaveral are used in the flight simulations. An overview of the novel guidance and flight control strategies are provided. The energy-usage of the baseline configuration during month-long stationkeeping missions (i.e., within 150-mile radius of downtown Orlando) is characterized and compared to that of a pure solar aircraft
Is the magnetic field in the heliosheath laminar or a turbulent bath of bubbles?
All the current global models of the heliosphere are based on the assumption
that the magnetic field in the heliosheath, in the region close to the
heliopause is laminar. We argue that in that region the heliospheric magnetic
field is not laminar but instead consists of magnetic bubbles. Recently, we
proposed that the annihilation of the "sectored" magnetic field within the
heliosheath as it is compressed on its approach to the heliopause produces the
anomalous cosmic rays and also energetic electrons. As a product of the
annihilation of the sectored magnetic field, densely-packed magnetic
islands/bubbles are produced. These magnetic islands/bubbles will be convected
with the ambient flows as the sector region is carried to higher latitudes
filling the heliosheath. We further argue that the magnetic islands/bubbles
will develop upstream within the heliosheath. As a result, the magnetic field
in the heliosheath sector region will be disordered well upstream of the
heliopause. We present a 3D MHD simulation with very high numerical resolution
that captures the north-south boundaries of the sector region. We show that due
to the high pressure of the interstellar magnetic field a north-south asymmetry
develops such that the disordered sectored region fills a large portion of the
northern part of the heliosphere with a smaller extension in the southern
hemisphere. We suggest that this scenario is supported by the following changes
that occur around 2008 and from 2009.16 onward: a) the sudden decrease in the
intensity of low energy electrons detected by Voyager 2; b) a sharp reduction
in the intensity of fluctuations of the radial flow; and c) the dramatic
differences in intensity trends between GCRs at V1 and 2. We argue that these
observations are a consequence of V2 leaving the sector region of disordered
field during these periods and crossing into a region of unipolar laminar
field.Comment: 36 pages, 15 figures, submitted to Ap

Joint Strong and Weak Lensing Analysis of the Massive Cluster Field J0850+3604
We present a combined strong and weak lensing analysis of the
J085007.6+360428 (J0850) field, which was selected by its high projected
concentration of luminous red galaxies and contains the massive cluster Zwicky
1953. Using Subaru/Suprime-Cam imaging and
MMT/Hectospec spectroscopy, we first perform a weak lensing shear analysis to
constrain the mass distribution in this field, including the cluster at and a smaller foreground halo at . We then add a strong
lensing constraint from a multiply-imaged galaxy in the imaging data with a
photometric redshift of . Unlike previous cluster-scale lens
analyses, our technique accounts for the full three-dimensional mass structure
in the beam, including galaxies along the line of sight. In contrast with past
cluster analyses that use only lensed image positions as constraints, we use
the full surface brightness distribution of the images. This method predicts
that the source galaxy crosses a lensing caustic such that one image is a
highly-magnified "fold arc", which could be used to probe the source galaxy's
structure at ultra-high spatial resolution ( pc). We calculate the mass
of the primary cluster to be with a concentration of , consistent with the mass-concentration relation of
massive clusters at a similar redshift. The large mass of this cluster makes
J0850 an excellent field for leveraging lensing magnification to search for
high-redshift galaxies, competitive with and complementary to that of
well-studied clusters such as the HST Frontier Fields.Comment: Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal; 14 pages, 13

A Spectroscopic Survey of the Fields of 28 Strong Gravitational Lenses: Implications for
Strong gravitational lensing provides an independent measurement of the
Hubble parameter (). One remaining systematic is a bias from the
additional mass due to a galaxy group at the lens redshift or along the
sightline. We quantify this bias for more than 20 strong lenses that have
well-sampled sightline mass distributions, focusing on the convergence
and shear . In 23% of these fields, a lens group contributes a 1%
convergence bias; in 57%, there is a similarly significant line-of-sight group.
For the nine time delay lens systems, is overestimated by 11%
on average when groups are ignored. In 67% of fields with total
0.01, line-of-sight groups contribute more convergence than
do lens groups, indicating that the lens group is not the only important mass.
Lens environment affects the ratio of four (quad) to two (double) image
systems; all seven quads have lens groups while only three of 10 doubles do,
and the highest convergences due to lens groups are in quads. We calibrate the
- relation: with a rms scatter of 0.34 dex.
Shear, which, unlike convergence, can be measured directly from lensed images,
can be a poor predictor of ; for 19% of our fields, is
. Thus, accurate cosmology using strong gravitational lenses
requires precise measurement and correction for all significant structures in
each lens field.Comment: 34 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in Ap
Answers that Have Integrity
[EN] Answers to queries in possibly inconsistent databases may
not have integrity. We formalize ‘has integrity’ on the basis of a definition
of ‘causes’. A cause of an answer is a minimal excerpt of the database
that explains why the answer has been given. An answer has integrity if
one of its causes does not overlap with any cause of integrity violation.Supported by FEDER and the Spanish grants TIN2009-14460-C03, TIN2010-17139.Decker, H. (2011). Answers that Have Integrity. Lecture Notes in Computer Science. 6834:54-72. https://doi.org/10.1007/978-3-642-23441-5S5472683
Building a QC Database of Meteorological Data from NASA KSC and the United States Air Force's Eastern Range
The National Aeronautics and Space Administration's (NASA) Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) Natural Environments Branch (EV44) provides atmospheric databases and analysis in support of space vehicle design and day-of-launch operations for NASA and commercial launch vehicle programs launching from the NASA Kennedy Space Center (KSC), co-located on the United States Air Force's Eastern Range (ER) at the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. The ER complex is one of the most heavily instrumented sites in the United States with over 31 towers measuring various atmospheric parameters on a continuous basis. An inherent challenge with large datasets consists of ensuring erroneous data are removed from databases, and thus excluded from launch vehicle design analyses. EV44 has put forth great effort in developing quality control (QC) procedures for individual meteorological instruments, however no standard QC procedures for all databases currently exists resulting in QC databases that have inconsistencies in variables, development methodologies, and periods of record. The goal of this activity is to use the previous efforts to develop a standardized set of QC procedures from which to build meteorological databases from KSC and the ER, while maintaining open communication with end users from the launch community to develop ways to improve, adapt and grow the QC database. Details of the QC procedures will be described. As the rate of launches increases with additional launch vehicle programs, It is becoming more important that weather databases are continually updated and checked for data quality before use in launch vehicle design and certification analyses
Closed orbit correction at synchrotrons for symmetric and near-symmetric lattices
This contribution compiles the benefits of lattice symmetry in the context of
closed orbit correction. A symmetric arrangement of BPMs and correctors results
in structured orbit response matrices of Circulant or block Circulant type.
These forms of matrices provide favorable properties in terms of computational
complexity, information compression and interpretation of mathematical vector
spaces of BPMs and correctors. For broken symmetries, a nearest-Circulant
approximation is introduced and the practical advantages of symmetry
exploitation are demonstrated with the help of simulations and experiments in
the context of FAIR synchrotrons
