Molecular Gas during the Post-Starburst Phase: Low Gas Fractions in Green Valley Seyfert Post-Starburst Galaxies
Post-starbursts (PSBs) are candidate for rapidly transitioning from
star-bursting to quiescent galaxies. We study the molecular gas evolution of
PSBs at z ~ 0.03 - 0.2. We undertook new CO (2-1) observations of 22 Seyfert
PSBs candidates using the ARO Submillimeter Telescope. This sample complements
previous samples of PSBs by including green valley PSBs with Seyfert-like
emission, allowing us to analyze for the first time the molecular gas
properties of 116 PSBs with a variety of AGN properties. The distribution of
molecular gas to stellar mass fractions in PSBs is significantly different than
normal star-forming galaxies in the COLD GASS survey. The combined samples of
PSBs with Seyfert-like emission line ratios have a gas fraction distribution
which is even more significantly different and is broader (~ 0.03-0.3). Most of
them have lower gas fractions than normal star-forming galaxies. We find a
highly significant correlation between the WISE 12 micron to 4.6 micron flux
ratios and molecular gas fractions in both PSBs and normal galaxies. We detect
molecular gas in 27% of our Seyfert PSBs. Taking into account the upper limits,
the mean and the dispersion of the distribution of the gas fraction in our
Seyfert PSB sample are much smaller (mean = 0.025, std dev. = 0.018) than
previous samples of Seyfert PSBs or PSBs in general (mean ~ 0.1 - 0.2, std dev.

REDUCING BLACKBIRD DAMAGE TO NEWLY PLANTED RICE WITH A NONTOXIC CLAY-BASED SEED COATING
At 3 sites in Chambers County, Texas, the estimated sprout loss in 1-ac plots sown with clay-coated rice seed averaged 17.0% compared to 36.5% in adjacent 1-ac control plots. In one field, bird use of the control plot was 14 times that of the treated plot. Average feeding rates of red-winged blackbirds (Agelaius phoeniceus) were 1.5 seeds/min and 8.4 seeds/min in the treated and control plots, respectively. Roadside counts of territorial male redwings and evening flightline counts of birds going to roost indicated a depredating population consisting mainly of nonbreeding, roosting birds early in April with increasing proportions of breeding birds as the rice-planting season progressed. The results of this study are consistent with previous laboratory findings and with predictions from foraging theory. Further development and field testing of the seed coating will be required before the technique becomes generally available as a method for reducing bird damage to sprouted rice
Mirror symmetry breaking as a problem in dynamical critical phenomena
The critical properties of the Frank model of spontaneous chiral synthesis
are discussed by applying results from the field theoretic renormalization
group (RG). The long time and long wavelength features of this microscopic
reaction scheme belong to the same universality class as multi-colored directed
percolation processes. Thus, the following RG fixed points (FP) govern the
critical dynamics of the Frank model for d<4: one unstable FP that corresponds
to complete decoupling between the two enantiomers, a saddle-point that
corresponds to symmetric interspecies coupling, and two stable FPs that
individually correspond to unidirectional couplings between the two chiral
molecules. These latter two FPs are associated with the breakdown of mirror or
chiral symmetry. In this simplified model of molecular synthesis, homochirality
is a natural consequence of the intrinsic reaction noise in the critical
regime, which corresponds to extremely dilute chemical systems.Comment: 9 pages, 3 figure
Knowledge and Awareness Among Patients with Chronic Kidney Disease Stage 3
Knowledge is a prerequisite for changing behavior, and is useful for improving outcomes and reducing mortality rates in patients diagnosed with chronic kidney disease (CKD). The purpose of this article is to describe baseline CKD knowledge and awareness obtained as part of a larger study testing the feasibility of a self-management intervention. Thirty patients were recruited who had CKD Stage 3 with coexisting diabetes and hypertension. Fifty-four percent of the sample were unaware of their CKD diagnosis. Participants had a moderate amount of CKD knowledge. This study suggests the need to increase knowledge in patients with CKD Stage 3 to aid in slowing disease progression
Anthraquinone protects rice seed from birds
Application of bird-repellent chemicals to seed prior to planting is one possible approach to reducing bird damage to rice. Anthraquinone is a promising seed treatment compound, and in this paper we describe a sequence of tests evaluating a formulated commercial anthraquinone product. In l-cup cage tests, rice consumption by individual male red-winged blackbirds (Agelaius phoeniceus) and female boat-tailed grackles (Quiscalus major) was reduced 64-93% by 0.5 and 1.0% (g/g) anthraquinone treatments. Daily rice consumption by single male boat-tailed grackles tested in large enclosures was reduced from \u3e 14 g in pretreatment to \u3c 1 g by a 1.0% treatment. One of five test birds ate nothing during a 1 day post-treatment session. In a 7 day trial within a 0.2 ha flight pen, a group of four male grackles consumed 1.3% of anthraquinone-treated rice seed compared to 84.1% of sorghum, a nonpreferred alternate food. At two study sites in southwestern Louisiana, loss of rice sprouts in 2 ha plots sown with anthraquinone-treated seed was 0 and 12% compared to losses of 33% and 98% in nearby untreated plots. The formulation performed well at every stage of testing, and further development of anthraquinone products for bird-damage management is warranted
Clinical situations for which 3D printing is considered an appropriate representation or extension of data contained in a medical imaging examination: Neurosurgical and otolaryngologic conditions
BACKGROUND: Medical three dimensional (3D) printing is performed for neurosurgical and otolaryngologic conditions, but without evidence-based guidance on clinical appropriateness. A writing group composed of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) Special Interest Group on 3D Printing (SIG) provides appropriateness recommendations for neurologic 3D printing conditions.
METHODS: A structured literature search was conducted to identify all relevant articles using 3D printing technology associated with neurologic and otolaryngologic conditions. Each study was vetted by the authors and strength of evidence was assessed according to published guidelines.
RESULTS: Evidence-based recommendations for when 3D printing is appropriate are provided for diseases of the calvaria and skull base, brain tumors and cerebrovascular disease. Recommendations are provided in accordance with strength of evidence of publications corresponding to each neurologic condition combined with expert opinion from members of the 3D printing SIG.
CONCLUSIONS: This consensus guidance document, created by the members of the 3D printing SIG, provides a reference for clinical standards of 3D printing for neurologic conditions
Medulloblastoma has a global impact on health related quality of life: Findings from an international cohort.
BackgroundUnderstanding the global impact of medulloblastoma on health related quality of life (HRQL) is critical to characterizing the broad impact of this disease and realizing the benefits of modern treatments. We evaluated HRQL in an international cohort of pediatric medulloblastoma patients.MethodsSeventy-six patients were selected from 10 sites across North America, Europe, and Asia, who participated in the Medulloblastoma Advanced Genomics International Consortium (MAGIC). The Health Utilities Index (HUI) was administered to patients and/or parents at each site. Responses were used to determine overall HRQL and attributes (ie specific subdomains). The impact of various demographic and medical variables on HRQL was considered-including molecular subgroup.ResultsThe majority of patients reported having moderate or severe overall burden of morbidity for both the HUI2 and HUI3 (HUI2 = 60%; HUI3 = 72.1%) when proxy-assessed. Self-care in the HUI2 was rated as higher (ie better outcome) for patients from Western versus Eastern sites, P = .02. Patients with nonmetastatic status had higher values (ie better outcomes) for the HUI3 hearing, HUI3 pain, and HUI2 pain, all P < .05. Patients treated with a gross total resection also had better outcomes for the HUI3 hearing (P = .04). However, those who underwent a gross total resection reported having worse outcomes on the HUI3 vision (P = .02). No differences in HRQL were evident as a function of subgroup.ConclusionsBy examining an international sample of survivors, we characterized the worldwide impact of medulloblastoma. This is a critical first step in developing global standards for evaluating long-term outcomes
Lyapunov spectral analysis of a nonequilibrium Ising-like transition
By simulating a nonequilibrium coupled map lattice that undergoes an
Ising-like phase transition, we show that the Lyapunov spectrum and related
dynamical quantities such as the dimension correlation length~ are
insensitive to the onset of long-range ferromagnetic order. As a function of
lattice coupling constant~ and for certain lattice maps, the Lyapunov
dimension density and other dynamical order parameters go through a minimum.
The occurrence of this minimum as a function of~ depends on the number of
nearest neighbors of a lattice point but not on the lattice symmetry, on the
lattice dimensionality or on the position of the Ising-like transition. In
one-space dimension, the spatial correlation length associated with magnitude
fluctuations and the length~ are approximately equal, with both
