Precision limits of the twin-beam multiband URSULA

    Get PDF
URSULA is a multiband astronomical photoelectric photometer which minimizes errors introduced by the presence of the atmosphere. It operates with two identical channels, one for the star to be measured and the other for a reference star. After a technical description of the present version of the apparatus, some measurements of stellar sources of different brightness, and in different atmospheric conditions are presented. These measurements, based on observations made with the 91 cm Cassegrain telescope of the Catania Astrophysical Observatory, are used to check the photometer accuracy and compare its performance with that of standard photometers

Il trattamento mediante osteosintesi nelle metastasi dello scheletro appendicolare

Treatment of pathological fractures or impending fractures should be based on a multidisciplinary approach. Surgical procedures have to be suited not only to local mechanical conditions but also to patient’s life expectancy and behaviour of the particular tumor in relation to adiuvant not surgical treatments. Indications of osteosynthesis versus resection-reconstruction, choice of fixation alone or after curettage, different fixation options in metastatic disease and technical tips are analyzed

Evidence for tissue-associated α2-macroglobulin in mouse skeletal muscle

α2-Macroglobulin (α2M), a major serum protease inhibitor, was localized in mouse skeletal muscle by immunoperoxidase histochemistry. In all muscles examined (mm. soleus, plantaris, and extensor digitorum longus) specific immunoreactivity occurred diffusely in extracellular structures (periendomysium, blood vessel wall) as well as inside about a half of the muscle fibers. This localization pattern did not change substantially by extensively perfusing deeply anesthetized mice with phosphate buffered saline (PBS) to remove serum α2M. In release experiments on fresh (nonfixed) cryostat sections, specific immunoreactivity persisted after an extensive prewash with PBS (up to 5-6 h), but a new specific staining appeared inside those fibers that were originally negative. Western blotting experiments were negative on the soluble fraction of muscle homogenate, thus confirming that the perfusion procedure was effective in removing serum α2M. By contrast, three specific bands (185, 165, and 35 kDa) appeared in detergent- solubilized extracts (0.3% Triton X-100), indicating the occurrence of tissue-associated α2M. Confocal immunofluorescence microscopy revealed that the intracellular specific staining was associated to a longitudinal network, probably corresponding to the sarcoplasmic reticulum. A multifunctional role of α2M in skeletal muscle was hypothesized

La qualit\ue0 della vita nell\u2019anziano in dialisi [Quality of life of the elderly patient on dialysis].

When elderly patients with end-stage renal disease start dialysis their quality of life, and particularly the emotional aspects of it, are very similar to those of age-matched controls. However, as the treatment becomes chronic the quality of life will decline not only with regard to the physical aspects (due to comorbidities) but also the emotional aspects. Dialysis-related stress episodes and the peculiar interrelationships in the dialysis facility setting may cause psychological discomfort which on the one hand reduces the patient's quality of life and on the other may unfavorably impact on the family and the health-care personnel. An integrated psychological approach involving the patient from the beginning of dialysis throughout the treatment process as well as the healthcare personnel and the family can reduce the patient's psychological discomfort, thereby improving quality of life

Low-Dosage Ibopamine Treatment in Progressive Renal Failure: A Long-Term Multicentre Trial

A multicentre trial (11 nephrology centres) was carried out to test the effects of ibopamine, an orally active dopamine-like drug, on the progressionof chronic renal failure. For a 2-year period 189 chronic renal failure patients (serum creatinine level 1.5-4.0 mg/dl) were observed. They were homogeneous for basic nephropathy, degree of residual renal function, blood pressure, and proteinuria. the patients were randomly divided into two groups: 96 took ibopamine at a dosage of 100 mg/day (group A) and 93 served as controls (group B). All were on a low-protein diet (mean 0.8 g/kg body weight). By the end of the observation period, the rate of decrease of the renal function indexes in time proved significantly slower (1.8 times) in group A than in group B. The survival curves for renal function (pre-established end points were creatinine level increases equal to or > 20% and equal to or > 40% of the basal values) proved significantly better (p < 0.02 and p < 0.002 respectively)in group A than in group B. The mean plasma creatinine values rose by 17% in group A and by 36% in group B. The creatinine clearance decreased by 5% in treated patients and by 14% in the controls. Statistical analysis ruled out any possible centre effect. The trial suggests that low-dosage ibopamine administration may be used as a valid and safe pharmacological adjunct for retarding the progression of renal failure in patients with mild or moderate chronic renal impairment. © 1996 S.
