Information Apprenticeship: Integrating Faith and Learning in the Library

Librarianship is built on information. As we proceed further into the 21st century, librarians need to understand the concept of “information” as it cannot be easily defined. This paper presents a brief overview of information theory and reviews several concepts proposed by non-librarians. Also, these ideas, when viewed from a Christian perspective can help our understanding of “information.” A review of related scriptures is also included

Hydrological modification of subsurface drainage systems

Controlled Drainage (CD), a subsurface drainage management system, has been researched in many regions. Previous research has reported CD to reduce subsurface drainage and as a result reduce nitrate loading. CD has been reported to have little effect on nitrate concentrations, so exploring alternative treatments to reduce these concentrations would be constructive. This research was intended to measure the effect of CD on surface runoff, crop yield, water table depth, and to document a biofilter\u27s effect on nitrate concentrations. CD increased surface runoff ranging from 53% to 130%, increased corn yield by 14% over two years, and decreased nitrate loading with a range of 47% to 93%. The use of a biofilter decreased nitrate concentrations and loading by 35%. Water table measurements were also taken every five minutes on average over a two-year period and showed potential long-term water retention in a CD system

Phytoplankton-zooplankton relationships on Georges Bank

Comparisons of different oceanic regions often suggest that in the largest sense there is a direct relationship between phytoplankton and zooplankton-that is, banks and coastal areas with large concentrations of phytoplankton are likely to be rich in zooplankton, while sparser crops of both occur in deep oceanic waters. On the other hand, surveys of particular areas often show an inverse relationship, with local swarms of zooplankton occurring in phytoplankton-poor waters, alternating with dense patches of phytoplankton containing few animals...

MEMS 411: Lift Demonstration

A portable lift demonstration was requested to get children interested and thinking about what happens with fluid movement. The demonstration had size and weight requirements, which were both met. Accuracy of lift force representation was not requested, but simple force and flow visualizations were required. The demonstration had variable wind speeds, and showed the change in force with change in angle of attack

First Profunda Artery Perforator Flap for Breast Reconstruction Performed at a VA Hospital

The profunda artery perforator (PAP) flap for breast reconstruction originated by Dr. Robert J. Allen in 2010 after multiple failed attempts at using muscle-sparing transverse rectus abdominal muscle (MS-TRAM) flap and implants. This flap method was initially approached due to the patient’s request for an autologous tissue graft that did not sacrifice muscle. The PAP flap has grown significantly in popularity and usage in breast reconstruction and makes up to about 16% of autologous breast reconstruction, coming second to DIEP flaps (76%). This well-tolerated, muscle-sparing approach is ideal for patients without sufficient abdominal fat (low BMI or previous abdominal liposuction) or those who prefer a non-abdominal donor site. In addition to its gained popularity for breast reconstruction, the PAP flap has also been utilized in defects reconstruction over the entire body such as the head and neck, lower extremities, vulva, and tongue. This is a sophisticated procedure and has never been performed at a VA hospital before this case

Therapeutic interventions for osteoarthritis of the wrist: a systematic review and meta-analysis [version 1; referees: 3 approved]

Background: In order to evaluate the effectiveness of interventions for osteoarthritis of the wrist in adults we performed a systematic review and meta-analysis. Methods: The MEDLINE and EMBASE via OVID, CINAHL and SPORTDiscus via EBSCO databases were searched from inception to 25th April  2018.All randomised controlled clinical trials (RCTs) and any prospective studies of adults with wrist osteoarthritis investigating any intervention with a comparator were included.  Data were extracted and checked for accuracy and completeness by pairs of reviewers. Primary outcomes were pain and function. Comparative treatment effects were analysed by random effects at all time points. Results: Three RCTs were identified for inclusion after screening and all had a high risk of bias. Two compared proximal row carpectomy (PRC) with four corner fusion (4CF) for post-traumatic osteoarthritis, while the other compared leather with commercial wrist splints in patients with chronic wrist pain, of which a small group had wrist osteoarthritis.  Conclusion: There is no prospective study comparing operative to non-operative treatment for wrist osteoarthritis, while there is a paucity of prospective studies assessing the effectiveness of both non-operative and operative interventions.  Further research is necessary in order to better define which patients benefit from which specific interventions. Osteochondral Allograft Transplantation in Professional Athletes: Rehabilitation and Return to Play

For the treatment of large chondral and osteochondral defects of the knee, osteochondral allograft transplantation (OCA) is an effective solution with relatively high rates of return to sport. In professional athletes, rehabilitation following OCA is a critical component of the process of returning the athlete to full sports activity and requires a multidisciplinary team approach with frequent communication between the surgical and rehabilitation teams (physical therapists, athletic trainers, coaching staff). In this review, we describe our five-phase approach to progressive rehabilitation of the professional athlete after OCA, which takes into account the biological processes of healing and optimization of neuromuscular function required for the demands of elite-level sport. The principles of early range of motion, proper progression through the kinetic chain, avoidance of pain and effusion, optimization of movement, regimen individuation, and integration of sports-specific activities underlie proper recovery

Radiotelemetry reveals key data for the conservation of Sheppardia gabela (Rand, 1957) in the Angolan Escarpment forest

Biodiversity information in Angola is limited or nonexistent, hindering the design and implementation of conservation strategies. The Escarpment forest is one of the most important areas for bird diversity in the country. However, there is almost no information about the territorial needs and habitat preferences of its threatened endemic birds. This study evaluated these needs and preferences in Gabela akalat Sheppardia gabela, a range-restricted endemic to the Central Escarpment. Eighteen individuals of Gabela akalat were captured and radio-tracked with the objectives of establishing their territory size (through home-range size estimates) and habitat preferences using compositional analysis. Home-range sizes were slightly larger than other Sheppardia species and Gabela akalat evidently avoided clearings and preferred forest habitat, although it was also able to use farmland areas and secondary growth to a lesser extent. Conservation measures should focus on the preservation of remaining old-growth forest through the establishment of a nature reserve in Kumbira. To assure the success of such an initiative, the local population should participate in planning, administration and enforcement. We outline some measures that could help address the economic needs of the local community while maintaining forest cover
