An Unnoticed Chapter of Americanism: The Second American Congress of Lima and the Leadership of Justo Arosemena (1864-1865)

Nuevos intentos europeos de reconquista y monarquización de América Latina llevan a los gobiernos sudamericanos a organizar el Segundo Congreso americano de Lima en 1864. La asamblea produjo varios tratados, procuró la mediación en la Guerra Hispano-Sudamericana e incentivó el americanismo como mecanismo de defensa. El presente artículo identifica los aportes de Justo Arosemena y del libro que publica al inicio de las labores congresales, así como el lugar que tiene su unionismo en el contexto general de su obra constitucionalista.New European attempts of reconquest and of monarchization of Latin America change lead South American Governments to organize the second American Congress of Lima in 1864. The Assembly produced several treaties, attempted to mediate in the Spanish South-American War and encouraged the spread of Americanism as a defense mechanism. The Unity as a Component of Independence: Antecedents of Latin American Integration in Santiago de Chile (1810-1813)

En el presente artículo analizamos los primeros escritos independentistas difundidos en Santiago de Chile entre 1810 y 1813 desde la perspectiva de su aporte a la creación de las bases ideológicas que facilitarán la participación del país en posteriores iniciativas confederales hispanoamericanas. Las conclusiones de nuestra investigación refrendan la importancia de la idea del congreso general durante el periodo de la Patria Vieja y matizan la hipótesis sobre el monopolio del proyecto protonacional defendida por la historiografía mayoritaria.In this article we analyze the first independentists writings disseminated in Santiago de Chile between 1810 and 1813 from the perspective of their contribution to the creation of the ideological foundations that will facilitate the country’s participation in posterior Latin American confederal initiatives from 1821 to 1826. The findings endorse the importance of the idea of the general congress during the Patria Vieja period, and challenge the assumption about the monopoly of proto national project championed by mainstream historiography

Star formation triggered by SN explosions: an application to the stellar association of β\beta Pictoris

In the present study, considering the physical conditions that are relevant in interactions between supernova remnants (SNRs) and dense molecular clouds for triggering star formation we have built a diagram of SNR radius versus cloud density in which the constraints above delineate a shaded zone where star formation is allowed. We have also performed fully 3-D radiatively cooling numerical simulations of the impact between SNRs and clouds under different initial conditions in order to follow the initial steps of these interactions. We determine the conditions that may lead either to cloud collapse and star formation or to complete cloud destruction and find that the numerical results are consistent with those of the SNR-cloud density diagram. Finally, we have applied the results above to the $\beta-$Pictoris stellar association which is composed of low mass Post-T Tauri stars with an age of 11 Myr. It has been recently suggested that its formation could have been triggered by the shock wave produced by a SN explosion localized at a distance of about 62 pc that may have occurred either in the Lower Centaurus Crux (LCC) or in the Upper Centaurus Lupus (UCL) which are both nearby older subgroups of that association (Ortega and co-workers). Using the results of the analysis above we have shown that the suggested origin for the young association at the proposed distance is plausible only for a very restricted range of initial conditions for the parent molecular cloud, i.e., a cloud with a radius of the order of 10 pc and density of the order of 20 cm$^{-3}$ and a temperature of the order of 50$-$100 K.Comment: 9 pages, 10 figures, to appear in MNRA

Structure and Evolution of Low-Mass Stars: An Overview and Some Open Problems

A review is presented of some of the ingredients, assumptions and techniques that are used in the computation of the structure and evolution of low-mass stars. Emphasis is placed on several ingredients which are still subject to considerable uncertainty. An overview of the evolution of low-mass stars is also presented, from the cloud collapse phase all the way to the white dwarf cooling curve.Comment: 52 pages, 6 figures. La salud perinatal de la mujer en una comunidad indígena

La salud perinatal es una parte de la salud reproductiva que favorece la maternidad saludable y sin riesgo, por medio de estrategias para disminuir la morbilidad y mortalidad. Se describe la experiencia de la mujer en su etapa reproductiva y la influencia en la salud perinatal. Este estudio es de naturaleza cualitativa y exploratoria y fue desarrollado con siete mujeres. Los datos se obtuvieron por medio de la entrevista semiestructurada y observación participante. Los resultados resaltaron las creencias y costumbres durante el embarazo, parto y posparto. El conocimiento adquirido en ese contexto cultural de manera cotidiana promueve el bienestar de la familia y la capacidad de la mujer para autocuidarse
