Independent data for transparent monitoring of greenhouse gas emissions from the land use sector â What do stakeholders think and need?
The agriculture, forestry and other land use (AFOLU) sectors contribute substantially to the net global anthropogenic greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. To reduce these emissions under the Paris Agreement, effective mitigation actions are needed that require engagement of multiple stakeholders. Emission reduction also requires that accurate, consistent and comparable datasets are available for transparent reference and progress monitoring. Availability of free and open datasets and portals (referred to as independent data) increases, offering opportunities for improving and reconciling estimates of GHG emissions and mitigation options. Through an online survey, we investigated stakeholdersâ data needs for estimating forest area and change, forest biomass and emission factors, and AFOLU GHG emissions. The survey was completed by 359 respondents from governmental, intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations, research institutes and universities, and public and private companies. These can be grouped into data users and data providers. Our results show that current open and freely available datasets and portals are only able to fulfil stakeholder needs to a certain degree. Users require a) detailed documentation regarding the scope and usability of the data, b) comparability between alternative data sources, c) uncertainty estimates for evaluating mitigation options, d) more region-specific and detailed data with higher accuracy for sub-national application, e) regular updates and continuity for establishing consistent time series. These requirements are found to be key elements for increasing overall transparency of data sources, definitions, methodologies and assumptions, which is required under the Paris Agreement. Raising awareness and improving data availability through centralized platforms are important for increasing engagement of data users. In countries with low capacities, independent data can support countriesâ mitigation planning and implementation, and related GHG reporting. However, there is a strong need for further guidance and capacity development (i.e. âreadiness supportâ) on how to make proper use of independent datasets. Continued investments will be needed to sustain programmes and keep improving datasets to serve the objectives of the many stakeholders involved in climate change mitigation and should focus on increased accessibility and transparency of data to encourage stakeholder involvement
Substrate-induced band gap opening in epitaxial graphene
Graphene has shown great application potentials as the host material for next
generation electronic devices. However, despite its intriguing properties, one
of the biggest hurdles for graphene to be useful as an electronic material is
its lacking of an energy gap in the electronic spectra. This, for example,
prevents the use of graphene in making transistors. Although several proposals
have been made to open a gap in graphene's electronic spectra, they all require
complex engineering of the graphene layer. Here we show that when graphene is
epitaxially grown on the SiC substrate, a gap of ~ 0.26 is produced. This gap
decreases as the sample thickness increases and eventually approaches zero when
the number of layers exceeds four. We propose that the origin of this gap is
the breaking of sublattice symmetry owing to the graphene-substrate
interaction. We believe our results highlight a promising direction for band

Influence of a knot on the strength of a polymer strand
Many experiments have been done to determine the relative strength of
different knots, and these show that the break in a knotted rope almost
invariably occurs at a point just outside the `entrance' to the knot. The
influence of knots on the properties of polymers has become of great interest,
in part because of their effect on mechanical properties. Knot theory applied
to the topology of macromolecules indicates that the simple trefoil or
`overhand' knot is likely to be present with high probability in any long
polymer strand. Fragments of DNA have been observed to contain such knots in
experiments and computer simulations. Here we use {\it ab initio} computational
methods to investigate the effect of a trefoil knot on the breaking strength of
a polymer strand. We find that the knot weakens the strand significantly, and
that, like a knotted rope, it breaks under tension at the entrance to the knot.Comment: 3 pages, 4 figure
Wilson Lines and a Canonical Basis of SU(4) Heterotic Standard Models
The spontaneous breaking of SU(4) heterotic standard models by Z_3 x Z_3
Wilson lines to the MSSM with three right-handed neutrino supermultiplets and
gauge group SU(3)_C x SU(2)_L x U(1) x U(1) is explored. The two-dimensional
subspace of the Spin(10) Lie algebra that commutes with su(3)_C + su(2)_L is
analyzed. It is shown that there is a unique basis for which the initial soft
supersymmetry breaking parameters are uncorrelated and for which the U(1) x
U(1) field strengths have no kinetic mixing at any scale. If the Wilson lines
"turn on" at different scales, there is an intermediate regime with either a
left-right or a Pati-Salam type model. We compute their spectra directly from
string theory, and adjust the associated mass parameter so that all gauge
parameters exactly unify. A detailed analysis of the running gauge couplings
and soft gaugino masses is presented.Comment: 59 pages, 9 figure
How countries link REDD+ interventions to drivers in their readiness plans: implications for monitoring systems
Countries participating in the REDD+ scheme are in the readiness phase, designing policy interventions to address drivers of deforestation and forest degradation (DD). In order for REDD+ interventions to be effective, it is essential that they take into account the specific drivers that they aim to address. Moreover it is crucial to design systems that monitor the effectiveness of the planned interventions. In this article we provide a comprehensive and comparative assessment of interventions proposed by 43 REDD+ countries in 98 readiness documents. We summarize the types of interventions and assess if they are formulated referring to the drivers of DD that they are aiming to address. Based on this assessment we consider the implications for systems for monitoring effectiveness of proposed interventions. Most countries reviewed link proposed interventions to specific drivers of DD. The majority of the countries making this link have better driver data quality, in particularly those that present their data in ratio or ordinal terms. Proposed interventions focus not only on activities to reduce deforestation, but also on other forest related REDD+ activities such as sustainable forest management, which reduce forest degradation and enhance forest stocks. Moreover, driver-specific interventions often relate to drivers not only inside but also outside the forest sector. Hence we suggest that monitoring systems need to assess not only deforestation rates through remote sensing, but also degradation and other carbon stock changes within the forest, using more detailed ground level surveys and measurements. In addition, the performance of interventions outside the forest need to be monitored, even if the impacts of these cannot be linked to specific changes in forest carbon stock in specific locations
F-theory on Genus-One Fibrations
We argue that M-theory compactified on an arbitrary genus-one fibration, that
is, an elliptic fibration which need not have a section, always has an F-theory
limit when the area of the genus-one fiber approaches zero. Such genus-one
fibrations can be easily constructed as toric hypersurfaces, and various
and models are presented as examples. To each
genus-one fibration one can associate a -function on the base as well as
an representation which together define the IIB axio-dilaton
and 7-brane content of the theory. The set of genus-one fibrations with the
same -function and representation, known as the
Tate-Shafarevich group, supplies an important degree of freedom in the
corresponding F-theory model which has not been studied carefully until now.
Six-dimensional anomaly cancellation as well as Witten's zero-mode count on
wrapped branes both imply corrections to the usual F-theory dictionary for some
of these models. In particular, neutral hypermultiplets which are localized at
codimension-two fibers can arise. (All previous known examples of localized
hypermultiplets were charged under the gauge group of the theory.) Finally, in
the absence of a section some novel monodromies of Kodaira fibers are allowed

Higgs Physics: Theory
I review the theoretical aspects of the physics of Higgs bosons, focusing on
the elements that are relevant for the production and detection at present
hadron colliders. After briefly summarizing the basics of electroweak symmetry
breaking in the Standard Model, I discuss Higgs production at the LHC and at
the Tevatron, with some focus on the main production mechanism, the gluon-gluon
fusion process, and summarize the main Higgs decay modes and the experimental
detection channels. I then briefly survey the case of the minimal
supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model. In a last section, I review the
prospects for determining the fundamental properties of the Higgs particles
