    Advances in Learning Bayesian Networks of Bounded Treewidth

    This work presents novel algorithms for learning Bayesian network structures with bounded treewidth. Both exact and approximate methods are developed. The exact method combines mixed-integer linear programming formulations for structure learning and treewidth computation. The approximate method consists in uniformly sampling kk-trees (maximal graphs of treewidth kk), and subsequently selecting, exactly or approximately, the best structure whose moral graph is a subgraph of that kk-tree. Some properties of these methods are discussed and proven. The approaches are empirically compared to each other and to a state-of-the-art method for learning bounded treewidth structures on a collection of public data sets with up to 100 variables. The experiments show that our exact algorithm outperforms the state of the art, and that the approximate approach is fairly accurate.Comment: 23 pages, 2 figures, 3 table

    CharBot: A Simple and Effective Method for Evading DGA Classifiers

    Domain generation algorithms (DGAs) are commonly leveraged by malware to create lists of domain names which can be used for command and control (C&C) purposes. Approaches based on machine learning have recently been developed to automatically detect generated domain names in real-time. In this work, we present a novel DGA called CharBot which is capable of producing large numbers of unregistered domain names that are not detected by state-of-the-art classifiers for real-time detection of DGAs, including the recently published methods FANCI (a random forest based on human-engineered features) and LSTM.MI (a deep learning approach). CharBot is very simple, effective and requires no knowledge of the targeted DGA classifiers. We show that retraining the classifiers on CharBot samples is not a viable defense strategy. We believe these findings show that DGA classifiers are inherently vulnerable to adversarial attacks if they rely only on the domain name string to make a decision. Designing a robust DGA classifier may, therefore, necessitate the use of additional information besides the domain name alone. To the best of our knowledge, CharBot is the simplest and most efficient black-box adversarial attack against DGA classifiers proposed to date

    In-Plane Magnetic Anisotropy In RF Sputtered Fe-N Thin Films

    We have fabricated Fe(N) thin films with varied N2 partial pressure and studied the microstructure, morphology, magnetic properties and resistivity by using X-ray diffraction, atomic force microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, vibrating-sample magnetometer and angle-resolved M-H hysteresis Loop tracer and standard four-point probe method. In the presence of low N2 partial pressure, Fe(N) films showed a basic bcc a-Fe structure with a preferred (110) texture. A variation of in-plane magnetic anisotropy of the Fe(N) films was observed with the changing of N component. The evolution of in-plane anisotropy in the films was attributed to the directional order mechanism. Nitrogen atoms play an important role in refining the a-Fe grains and inducing uniaxial anisotropy.Comment: 11 pages, 6 figure

    Ferromagnetic to spin glass cross over in (La,Tb)_{2/3}Ca_{1/3}MnO_{3}

    In the series La_{2/3-x}Tb_{x}Ca_{1/3}MnO_{3}, it is known that the compositions are ferromagnetic for smaller values of x and show spin glass characteristics at larger values of x. Our studies on the magnetic properties of various compositions in the La_{2/3-x}Tb_{x}Ca_{1/3}MnO_{3} series show that the cross over from ferromagnetic to spin glass region takes place above x ~ 1/8. Also, a low temperature anomaly at 30 K, observed in the ac susceptibility curves, disappears for compositions above this critical value of x. A mixed phase region coexists in the narrow compositional range 0.1 <= x <= 0.125, indicating that the ferromagnetic to spin glass cross over is not abrupt.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure

    Efficient learning of Bayesian networks with bounded tree-width

    Learning Bayesian networks with bounded tree-width has attracted much attention recently, because low tree-width allows exact inference to be performed efficiently. Some existing methods [24,29] tackle the problem by using k-trees to learn the optimal Bayesian network with tree-width up to k. Finding the best k-tree, however, is computationally intractable. In this paper, we propose a sampling method to efficiently find representative k-trees by introducing an informative score function to characterize the quality of a k-tree. To further improve the quality of the k-trees, we propose a probabilistic hill climbing approach that locally refines the sampled k-trees. The proposed algorithm can efficiently learn a quality Bayesian network with tree-width at most k. Experimental results demonstrate that our approach is more computationally efficient than the exact methods with comparable accuracy, and outperforms most existing approximate methods

    Human decellularized dermal matrix seeded with adipose-derived stem cells enhances wound healing in a murine model : experimental study

    Objective: Full-thickness cutaneous wounds treated with split-thickness skin grafts often result in unaesthetic and hypertrophic scars. Dermal substitutes are currently used together with skin grafts in a single treatment to reconstruct the dermal layer of the skin, resulting in improved quality of scars. Adipose-derived stem cells (ASCs) have been described to enhance wound healing through structural and humoral mechanisms. In this study, we investigate the compatibility of xenogen-free isolated human ASCs seeded on human acellular dermal matrix (Glyaderm (R)) in a murine immunodeficient wound model. Methods: Adipose tissue was obtained from abdominal liposuction, and stromal cells were isolated mechanically and cultured xenogen-free in autologous plasma-supplemented medium. Glyaderm (R) discs were seeded with EGFP-transduced ASCs, and implanted on 8 mm full-thickness dorsal wounds in an immunodeficient murine model, in comparison to standard Glyaderm (R) discs. Re-epithelialization rate, granulation thickness and vascularity were assessed by histology on days 3, 7 and 12. Statistical analysis was conducted using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test. EGFP-staining allowed for tracking of the ASCs in vivo. Hypoxic culture of the ASCs was performed to evaluate cytokine production. Results: ASCs were characterized with flowcytometric analysis and differentiation assay. EGFP-tranduction resulted in 95% positive cells after sorting. Re-epithelialization in the ASC-seeded Glyaderm (R) side was significantly increased, resulting in complete wound healing in 12 days. Granulation thickness and vascularization were significantly increased during early wound healing. EGFP-ASCs could be retrieved by immunohistochemistry in the granulation tissue in early wound healing, and lining vascular structures in later stages. Conclusion: Glyaderm (R) is an effective carrier to deliver ASCs in full-thickness wounds. ASC-seeded Glyaderm (R) significantly enhances wound healing compared to standard Glyaderm (R). The results of this study encourage clinical trials for treatment of full-thickness skin defects. Furthermore, xenogen-free isolation and autologous plasma-augmented culture expansion of ASCs, combined with the existing clinical experience with Glyaderm (R), aid in simplifying the necessary procedures in a GMP-laboratory setting

    Understanding affordances: history and contemporary development of Gibson’s central concept

    Gibson developed the affordance concept to complement his theory of direct perception that stands in sharp contrast with the prevalent inferential theories of perception. A comparison of the two approaches shows that the distinction between them also has an ontological aspect. We trace the history and newer formalizations of the notion of affordance and discuss some competing opinions on its scope. Next, empirical work on the affordance concept is reviewed in brief and the relevance of dynamical systems theory to affordance research is demonstrated. Finally, the striking but often neglected convergence of the ideas of Gibson and those of certain Continental philosophers is discussed
