Shift work: overall health state related to sleep in nursing workers

    No full text
The objective of this study was to identify the symptoms related to the overall health status associated with shift work in nursing and relate it to the quality of sleep. The study was performed at Hospital da Irmandade da Santa Casa in Pocos de Caldas, Minas Gerais State. The participants were 136 nursing professionals, of an average age of 33.1 years, divided into the following categories: nurse (8.1%); nurse technician (80.9%); and nursing aides working the day and night shifts (11%). The health symptoms were identified based on the Overall Health Status Inventory, and quality of sleep was evaluated based on sleep logs. The Chi-Square test showed statistical significance (p=0.021) for the presence of flatulence and abdominal distension during the night shift. Multiple linear regression analysis revealed that subjects working the day shift who experienced symptoms of poor digestion (sometimes or always) and irritability (always) had a poorer quality of sleep.4661471147

Circadian rhythm of wrist temperature and night shift-work

The stability of the circadian rhythms, especially regarding their amplitude and phase relationship, is a major factor for health. Shift-work and working night shifts are known to be associated with a variety of health problems caused, at least partially, by the disturbance of biological rhythms. Seventeen undergraduate nursing students attending the morning program at Nursing School, and working night shifts as Nursing Technicians, were submitted to the morningness-eveningness questionnaire, sleep logs, and wrist temperature assessment, during two periods of 2 weeks (school term and vacation). The observed prominent ultradian periods and reduced amplitude of the daily rhythm of wrist temperature, in addition to the reduced sleep duration during the school term, reinforce the idea that the mixed routine contributes to the disruption of the expression of the circadian rhythms and may have detrimental effects on safety and performance at work.44573774

Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES)The present study evaluates the use of salivary cortisol concentration as a physiological index of the stress level among nurses on their work day and day off and correlates it with the questionnaire used to measure occupational stress in nurses (Inventario de Estresse em Enfermeiros IEE). This is a comparative, cross-sectional descriptive study in which sociodemographic data, IEE results and salivary cortisol levels were used. Fifty-seven nurses participated in the study (80.7% females and a mean age of 37.1 years old). The IEE average score was 124.5. The average cortisol level was 564.1 ng/m on work day and 354.1 ng/mL on day off. Nurses who had double workdays presented high values of salivary cortisol during the work day (638.1 ng/mL). In conclusion, salivary cortisol identified the nurses' stress level, and differences were found between a work day and day off. On the nurses' day off, their salivary cortisol levels and stress scores were lower.47511871194Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES)Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES
