    Sexing up the international

    This thesis takes sexuality as its subject matter and uses a methodology informed by postcolonial studies to explore new possibilities for thinking about the international, its construction, and its contemporary politics. I argue that postcolonial readings of sexuality can impel us to rethink the meanings and politics of international theory and to challenge notions that have come to appear fixed and unchanging. The thesis canvasses how such an intervention might occur – calling especially for a focus on the local and the everyday – and considers both the utility and the limits of the contributions sexuality might make to a rethinking of international theory. My arguments are made with reference to a series of specific examples from contemporary East and Southeast Asia: the nationalistically imbued gendered and sexed figures of the national serviceman and the Singapore Girl in Singapore; the political and social repercussions of the trial of former Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim on charges of sodomy; newly emerging homosexual identities in Hong Kong; and the connections between sexuality and disease that inform the Thai response to HIV/AIDS. These case studies exemplify some of the ways in which sexuality can work to recast traditional scholarly understandings of the international. They also illuminate a series of aspects that shape the encounter between sexuality and the international, encompassing issues of nationalism, globalization, metaphor, spatiality and knowledge politics. Through my analysis of these issues, I argue for a broadening out of the source materials that inform knowledge about the international and the pursuit of alternative modes of reading processes of international change and exchange. I contend that scholarship of the international needs to pay more attention to instances where the borders separating everyday, national and international spaces break down, and where we might detect new forms of knowledge about the nature, politics and functioning of the international realm

    AbstractComparing operating speed (V85) with the theoretical design speeds makes many of the assessments fundamental to correct design more effective. In technical literature various models for estimatingV85 are present but they cannot be extended to motorways without risking substantial approximation. This study proposes a model for estimating V85 on motorways. In addition, it proposes a second model making it possible to estimate free flow speed (FFS) in various traffic conditions. This could be very useful for Level of Service studies on motorways

    User-Driven Design and Development of an Underwater Soft Gripper for Biological Sampling and Litter Collection

    Implementing manipulation and intervention capabilities in underwater vehicles is of crucial importance for commercial and scientific reasons. Mainstream underwater grippers are designed for the heavy load tasks typical of the industrial sector; however, due to the lack of alternatives, they are frequently used in biological sampling applications to handle irregular, delicate, and deformable specimens with a consequent high risk of damage. To overcome this limitation, the design of grippers for marine science applications should explicitly account for the requirements of end-users. In this paper, we aim at making a step forward and propose to systematically account for the needs of end-users by resorting to design tools used in industry for the conceptualization of new products which can yield great benefits to both applied robotic research and marine science. After the generation of the concept design for the gripper using a reduced version of the House of Quality and the Pugh decision matrix, we reported on its mechanical design, construction, and preliminary testing. The paper reports on the full design pipeline from requirements collection to preliminary testing with the aim of fostering and providing structure to fruitful interdisciplinary collaborations at the interface of robotics and marine science

    UCN-01 enhances cytotoxicity of irinotecan in colorectal cancer stem-like cells by impairing DNA damage response

    Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the most common and lethal cancers worldwide. Despite recent progress, the prognosis of advanced stage CRC remains poor, mainly because of cancer recurrence and metastasis. The high morbidity and mortality of CRC has been recently ascribed to a small population of tumor cells that hold the potential of tumor initiation, i.e. cancer stem cells (CSCs), which play a pivotal role in cancer recurrence and metastasis and are not eradicated by current therapy. We screened CRC-SCs in vitro with a library of protein kinase inhibitors and showed that CRC-SCs are resistant to specific inhibition of the major signaling pathways involved in cell survival and proliferation. Nonetheless, broad-spectrum inhibition by the staurosporin derivative UCN-01 blocks CRC-SC growth and potentiates the activity of irinotecan in vitro and in vivo CRC-SC-derived models. Reverse-Phase Protein Microarrays (RPPA) revealed that, albeit CRC-SCs display individual phospho-proteomic profiles, sensitivity of CRC-SCs to UCN-01 relies on the interference with the DNA damage response mediated by Chk1. Combination of LY2603618, a specific Chk1/2 inhibitor, with irinotecan resulted in a significant reduction of CRC-SC growth in vivo, confirming that irinotecan treatment coupled to inhibition of Chk1 represents a potentially effective therapeutic approach for CRC treatment

    The weed vegetation of the bean “Fagiolo Cannellino di Atina” and the red pepper “Peperone di Pontecorvo” PDO crops (Latium, central Italy)

    The weed vegetation of the bean “Fagiolo Cannellino di Atina” (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) and the red pepper “Peperone di Pontecorvo” (Capsicum annuum L.) PDO (Protected Designation of Origin) crops was surveyed by means of 16 relevés, sampled in four farms of southern Latium during July 2019. The relevés were subjected to multivariate analysis, which revealed that the two crops are weeded by vegetation types referable to two different subassociations of Panico-Polygonetum persicariae (Spergulo-Erodion, Eragrostietalia, Digitario-Eragrostietea). Namely, communities colonizing bean fields, which are more mesophilous and richer in Eurasian taxa, are ascribable to the subassociation sorghetosum halepensis. Communities colonizing red pepper fields, which are more thermophilous and richer in Mediterranean taxa, are ascribable to the subassociation cyperetosum rotundi. Floristic, structural, and chorological features of the communities are discussed in relation to environmental factors and agricultural management

    Atomic Force Microscopy Nanomechanics of Hard Nanometer-Thick Films on Soft Substrates: Insights into Stretchable Conductors

    The nanomechanical properties of ultrathin and nanostructured films of rigid electronic materials on soft substrates are of crucial relevance to realize materials and devices for stretchable electronics. Of particular interest are bending deformations in buckled nanometer-thick films or patterned networks of rigid materials as they can be exploited to compensate for the missing tensile elasticity. Here, we perform atomic force microscopy indentation experiments and electrical measurements to characterize the nanomechanics of ultrathin gold films on a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) elastomer. The measured force-indentation data can be analyzed in terms of a simple analytical model describing a bending plate on a semi-infinite soft substrate. The resulting method enables us to quantify the local Young’s modulus of elasticity of the nanometer-thick film. Systematic variation of the gold layer thickness reveals the presence of a diffuse interface between the metal film and the elastomer substrate that does not contribute to the bending stiffness. The effect is associated with gold clusters that penetrate the silicone and are not directly connected to the ultrathin film. Only above a critical layer thickness, percolation of the metallic thin film happens, causing a linear increase in bending stiffness and electrical conductivity
