Predictions for Triple Stars with and without a Pulsar in Star Clusters
Though about 80 pulsar binaries have been detected in globular clusters so
far, no pulsar has been found in a triple system in which all three objects are
of comparable mass. Here we present predictions for the abundance of such
triple systems, and for the most likely characteristics of these systems. Our
predictions are based on an extensive set of more than 500 direct simulations
of star clusters with primordial binaries, and a number of additional runs
containing primordial triples. Our simulations employ a number N_{tot} of equal
mass stars from N_{tot}=512 to N_{tot}=19661 and a primordial binary fraction
from 0-50%. In addition, we validate our results against simulations with
N=19661 that include a mass spectrum with a turn-off mass at 0.8 M_{sun},
appropriate to describe the old stellar populations of galactic globular
clusters. Based on our simulations, we expect that typical triple abundances in
the core of a dense cluster are two orders of magnitude lower than the binary
abundances, which in itself already suggests that we don't have to wait too

Genetic relationships within and among Iberian fescues (Festuca L.) based on PCR-amplified markers
The genus Festuca comprises approximately 450 species and is widely distributed around the world. The Iberian Penninsula, with more than 100 taxa colonizing very diverse habitats, is one of its main centers of diversification. This study was conducted to assess molecular genetic variation and genetic relatedness among 91 populations of 31 taxa of Iberian fescues, based on several molecular markers (random amplified polymorphic DNA, amplified fragment length polymorphisms, and trnL sequences). The analyses showed the paraphyletic origin of the broad-leaved (subgenus Festuca, sections Scariosae and Subbulbosae, and subgenus Schedonorus) and the fine-leaved fescues (subgenus Festuca, sections Aulaxyper, Eskia, and Festuca). Schedonorus showed a weak relationship with Lolium rigidum and appeared to be the most recent of the broad-leaved clade. Section Eskia was the most ancient and Festuca the most recent of the fine-leaved clade. Festuca and Aulaxyper were the most related sections, in concordance with their taxonomic affinities. All taxa grouped into their sections, except F. ampla and F. capillifolia (section Festuca), which appeared to be more closely related to Aulaxyper and to a new independent section, respectively. Most populations clustered at the species level, but some subspecies and varieties mixed their populations. Physical characterization of 2020 AV2, the first known asteroid orbiting inside Venus orbit
The first known asteroid with the orbit inside that of Venus is
2020~AV. This may be the largest member of a new population of small
bodies with the aphelion smaller than 0.718~au, called Vatiras. The surface of
2020~AV is being constantly modified by the high temperature, by the
strong solar wind irradiation that characterizes the innermost region of the
Solar system, and by high-energy micrometeorite impacts. The study of its
physical properties represents an extreme test-case for the science of
near-Earth asteroids. Here, we report spectroscopic observations of
2020~AV in the 0.5-1.5~ wavelength interval. These were performed
with the Nordic Optical Telescope and the William Herschel Telescope. Based on
the obtained spectra, we classify 2020~AV as a Sa-type asteroid. We
estimate the diameter of this Vatira to be km by
considering the average albedo of A-type and S-complex asteroids
(), and the absolute magnitude (H=
mag). The wide spectral band around 1~ shows the signature of an olivine
rich composition. The estimated band centre
corresponds to a ferroan olivine mineralogy similar to that of brachinite

U Geminorum: a test case for orbital parameters determination
High-resolution spectroscopy of U Gem was obtained during quiescence. We did
not find a hot spot or gas stream around the outer boundaries of the accretion
disk. Instead, we detected a strong narrow emission near the location of the
secondary star. We measured the radial velocity curve from the wings of the
double-peaked H emission line, and obtained a semi-amplitude value that
is in excellent agreement with the obtained from observations in the
ultraviolet spectral region by Sion et al. (1998). We present also a new method
to obtain K_2, which enhances the detection of absorption or emission features
arising in the late-type companion. Our results are compared with published
values derived from the near-infrared NaI line doublet. From a comparison of
the TiO band with those of late type M stars, we find that a best fit is
obtained for a M6V star, contributing 5 percent of the total light at that
spectral region. Assuming that the radial velocity semi-amplitudes reflect
accurately the motion of the binary components, then from our results: K_em =
107+/-2 km/s; K_abs = 310+/-5 km/s, and using the inclination angle given by
Zhang & Robinson(1987); i = 69.7+/-0.7, the system parameters become: M_WD =
1.20+/-0.05 M_sun,; M_RD = 0.42+/-0.04 M_sun; and a = 1.55+/- 0.02 R_sun. Based
on the separation of the double emission peaks, we calculate an outer disk
radius of R_out/a ~0.61, close to the distance of the inner Lagrangian point
L_1/a~0.63. Therefore we suggest that, at the time of observations, the
accretion disk was filling the Roche-Lobe of the primary, and that the matter
leaving the L_1 point was colliding with the disc directly, producing the hot

Pitfalls in spontaneous in vitro transformation of human mesenchymal stem cells
Spontaneous in vitro transformation of human primary cells was, and continues to be, a scarcely described phenomenon. Only the description of the generation of the HaCAT cell line [1] is a canonical example, worldwide accepted. More recent examples included the emergence of tumorogenic populations upon in vitro culture of fetal human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSC), induced by GM-CSF and IL-4, [2] and bone marrow hMSC [3]. Other examples have also been reported after very long-term in vitro culture of telomerized hMSCTerT [4]. In this scenario, our previous results [5-7] were only a new observation to be added to this list. Only very recently similar results have been published [8], reporting spontaneous malignant transformation in 46 % of bone marrow–derived hMSC long-term cultures (5–106 weeks). However, other authors reported opposite results.S
Mergers of close primordial binaries
We study the production of main sequence mergers of tidally-synchronized
primordial short-period binaries. The principal ingredients of our calculation
are the angular momentum loss rates inferred from the spindown of open cluster
stars and the distribution of binary properties in young open clusters. We
compare our results with the expected number of systems that experience mass
transfer in post-main sequence phases of evolution and compute the
uncertainties in the theoretical predictions. We estimate that main-sequence
mergers can account for the observed number of single blue stragglers in M67.
Applied to the blue straggler population, this implies that such mergers are
responsible for about one quarter of the population of halo blue metal poor
stars, and at least one third of the blue stragglers in open clusters for
systems older than 1 Gyr. The observed trends as a function of age are
consistent with a saturated angular momentum loss rate for rapidly rotating
tidally synchronized systems. The predicted number of blue stragglers from main
sequence mergers alone is comparable to the number observed in globular
clusters, indicating that the net effect of dynamical interactions in dense
stellar environments is to reduce rather than increase the blue straggler
population. A population of subturnoff mergers of order 3-4% of the upper main
sequence population is also predicted for stars older than 4 Gyr, which is
roughly comparable to the small population of highly Li-depleted halo dwarfs.

System Orchestration Support for a Collaborative Blended Learning Flow
Portable and interactive technologies are changing the nature of collaborative learning practices and open up new possibilities for Computer Supported Collaborative Learning (CSCL). Now, activities occurring in and beyond the classroom can be combined and integrated leading to a new type of complex collaborative blended learning scenarios. However, to organize and structure these scenarios is challenging and represent a workload for practitioners, which hinder the adoption of these technology-enhanced practices. As an approach to alleviate this workload, this paper proposes a proof of concept of a technological solution to overcome the limitations detected in an analysis of an actual collaborative blended learning experiment carried out in a previous study. The solution consists on a Unit of Learning suitable to be instantiated with IMS Learning Design and complemented by a GenericService Integration system. This chapter also discusses to which extent the proposed solution covers the limitations detected in the previous study and how useful could be for reducing the orchestration effort in future experiences.This work has been partially funded by the Project Learn3 (TIN2008-

Searching for Planets in the Hyades. I. The Keck Radial Velocity Survey
We describe a high-precision radial velocity search for jovian-mass
companions to main sequence stars in the Hyades star cluster. The Hyades
provides an extremely well controlled sample of stars of the same age, the same
metallicity, and a common birth and early dynamical environment. This sample
allows us to explore the dependence of the process of planet formation on only
a single independent variable: the stellar mass. In this paper we describe the
