Crohn’s disease (CD) is defined by chronic inflammation of an isolated portion of the gastrointestinal track. Frequently, the site of inflammation is the proximal portion of the colon, or less commonly, the terminal ileum. Other names for the disease frequently reported in medical literature and research include regional enteritis and granulomatous colitis. The specific etiology of CD is idiopathic but there are several widely accepted theories

American Civil-Military Relations: The Soldier and the State in a New Era

Samuel J. Huntington published his seminal work on American civil- military relations, The Soldier and the State, in 1957. His analysis, reflective of the U.S. experience in World War II, Korea, and the Cold War, was designed to “maximize military security at the least sacrifice to other social values.” It has provided a theoretical and practical guide to civil-military relations for more than fifty years. However, in this “new era” of the first decade of the twenty-first century, many have chal- lenged the continued relevance of Hun- tington’s theories

Decoupling of Corporate Social Investment in South Africa: Optics over Impact

    Get PDF
Examining corporate social investment (CSI) in South Africa through a lens of institutional theory, this study investigates the validity of criticisms found in literature and society of the practice of CSI in the country. Using a two-phase explanatory sequential research design, an initial quantitative study of archival data provides insights into the current state of CSI in South Africa. Regression and principal component analysis are then used to investigate the relationship between CSI levels and indicators for corporate financial performance and social need. A subsequent qualitative study utilising thematic analysis of interview data addresses questions arising from the quantitative analysis. Semi-structured interviews are conducted with leading corporate executives and academics in the field of CSI regarding their perceptions of the efficacy of CSI and the motivations driving corporate funding of CSI, including their concerns regarding CSI and suggestions for improvements. This study reveals profound concerns amongst corporate practitioners and in academia regarding the practice of CSI, including perceptions that the social impact of CSI is low and that the quality of many CSI programmes is poor. The motivations behind the funding of CSI were also seen to be largely inauthentic, with companies driven primarily by regulation or self-interest in their funding of CSI, rather than a sense of moral imperative. Companies appear to embrace CSI in an attempt to adhere to the social expectations and laws of society, thereby gaining legitimacy, stability, and improved long-term survival prospects. The formal structures and rhetoric surrounding CSI have become decoupled from the underlying activities that characterise its practice, however, a result of relative corporate indifference to its social impact. This ceremonial commitment to the practice of CSI has led to an emphasis on the optics rather than the impact of CSI activities. The results of this study suggest that enhanced incentives or disincentives and greater accountability may be required in order to make CSI contributions more impactful, as may improvements to best practices in the field

Agriculture, Climate, and Capitalist World-Economy: Rethinking the Global Crisis

    Get PDF
Our relationship with nature has been constantly changing throughout modern history. The ways in which we interact with extra-human natures in order to grow food and build empires has radically and successively transformed since the sixteenth century. With these transformations, the perception of our interactions with extra-human natures has changed as well. The modern perception of Humans versus Nature is challenged with a new ideological framework. This paper introduces the world-ecological framework, which recognizes the relationships of human and extra-human natures as deeply intertwined and dialectical histories. The world-ecological framework is contrasted with the modernist ontology in the debate of naming our current epochal era: Anthropocene versus the Capitalocene. Thinking through the global crisis using the world-ecological framework exposes the influence of capitalism on agriculture and climate. This paper uses the world-ecological framework to examine capitalist agriculture’s relationship to climate change as well as illustrate the limits and threats this relationship poses to the capitalist world-ecology

Systematic Review of High School Dropout Prevention Programs

This systematic literature review aims to introduce an innovative method of qualitative data analysis to the sparse empirical research of high school dropout prevention efforts. Through a framework of social capital theory, this study explores the social factors connected to at-risk schools and students. For decades, high school dropout and graduation has been a national focus. However, uncovering empirical studies evaluating the effectiveness of coordinated efforts is rare. This systematic literature serves two purposes, to fill gaps in the literature, and to integrate an innovative evaluation method for dropout prevention efforts. With a systematic literature review method, seven databases that embody various disciplines were explored. The literature search and data analysis sought to unveil empirical research and additionally, any innovative efforts being made in addressing poor school performance. Of 2,744 search results, 18 studies met inclusion criteria. This study highlights the social factors contributing to and preventing dropout. Data from the included studies and programs were compared to the concepts of bonding and bridging social capital. The findings suggest that research of dropout prevention programs lack empirical methodology, lack appreciation for social factors, produce mixed results, and don’t share any innovative theoretical frameworks. No studies or programs appeared to measure, analyze, or target in-depth social factors impacting the school, student population, or families

This thesis investigates the problem of “dead zones” in large bodies of water, specifically in the Chesapeake Bay. Using readily available weather and environmental research from several summer tropical cyclones, this thesis analyzes the possible impact of such storms on the Chesapeake Bay’s ecology and health as a body of water, looking at levels of different nutrients and the growth of algal blooms

Space / Anti-Space: Revisiting a Relationship of Opposites

    Get PDF
In the article “Space and Anti-Space” Steven Kent Peterson states that: …our objective (as architects) is an elaborate condition of spaces, a collision of inventions; not a neutral ground of anti-space but a plasma of spatial fields promoting multiple interactions, choices and opportunities.” The article focuses on the separation of the two and promotes the exclusion of anti-space in favor of space. Therefore, it is the contention of this thesis that architects can, in fact, fuse the aspects of space and anti-space in order to create more meaningful places than either can do alone. The vehicle chosen to explore this issue in contemporary Architecture is the Tony Sudekum low income housing development in Nashville, TN. The Sudekum development is a victim of an overabundance of anti-space and little or no discernible space, which detracts from the area’s spatial layering and texture. This study will overlay the principles of space and anti-space in an effort to analyze the aspect of place making in America’s Housing and Urban Development program, specifically the Hope VI Housing Program. Mario Botta’s Residential Development in Turin will serve as an example of how the fusion of space and anti-space can serve to promote and enrich the spatial qualities needed in place making in contrast to space and anti-space alone. Proctor and Matthew’s Abode Housing Development in Newhall, Harlow, Essex, (England) will serve as a precedent that also combines space and antispace that is illustrative of what the Sudekum Development in Nashville could potentially be
