    A Research of the Life of Charles Babbage

    Get PDF
    If the name of Charles Babbage does not in any way seem familiar, you do not stand alone. Babbage remains one of the most unpopular geniuses in our history, a mastermind of a variety of subjects, including mathematics, engineering, politics, economics, philosophy, and religion. Babbage would create the first calculating machine, and created blueprints for other machines that could have led to the first modem-day programmable computer in as early has the mid 19th century. However, the story of Charles Babbage is indeed a tragic one: the totality of his projects were not fully completed until the late 20th century, over a hundred years after his death, due to lack of funding. His story is one that brings about fear for the rest of humanity by raising this question: how many of the world\u27s greatest intellectual minds were never given a chance

    Senhor Rito - Branding de um evento pop-up multifacetado / Marca de Molhos Picantes

    Get PDF
Art Taco started as a grassroots brand out of the necessity to make light of the gaps in Art and Food for the masses not only for the elitist. The project looked for ways to educate the culture of Lisbon to the way we thought food and art should be viewed. A huge gap that we decided to fill out of self interest. This paper will research branding through primary sources, secondary sources, and case studies backed by some of the industries most prolific names in order to explore the most efficient way to stay relevant and become successful in this field. In the end a complete rebranding of Art Taco will take into account this research and show the results of if it is possible to create a truly mutant identity or if structure is necessary to create an overarching backbone

    CdSxSe1-x/ZnS semiconductor nanocrystal laser with sub 10kW/cm² threshold and 40nJ emission output at 600 nm

    Get PDF
    A colloidal quantum dot laser emitting at 600 nm with a sub 10kW/cm2 threshold at 5ns pulse pumping is reported. The device has a second order distributed feedback cavity for vertical emission and incorporates a bilayer planar waveguide structure based on a film of yellow-orange alloyed-core/shell CdSxSe1-x/ZnS quantum dots over-coated with polyvinyl alcohol. A study of the amplified spontaneous regime indicates that the quantum dot gain region behaves like a quasi-three level system and that the bilayer structure design increases the modal gain compared to a single layer of quantum dots. An output of 40nJ per pulse is measured for a total pump-to-signal efficiency above threshold of 3%

    An Investigation on Cooling of CZT Co-Planar Grid Detectors

    Full text link
    The effect of moderate cooling on CdZnTe semiconductor detectors has been studied for the COBRA experiment. Improvements in energy resolution and low energy threshold were observed and quantified as a function of temperature. Leakage currents are found to contribute typically \sim5 keV to the widths of photopeaks.Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures. Accepted for publication in Nuclear Inst. and Methods in Physics Research,

    AbstractThe authors describe their personal experience of responding to changing perceptions of best practice and the expanding evidence base, in relation to assessment and feedback in dental education. Changes at a particular dental school over the years are described, along with a more general outlook, culminating in suggestions for future directions.</jats:p

    CemOrange2 fusions facilitate multifluorophore subcellular imaging in C. elegans

    Due to its ease of genetic manipulation and transparency, Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans) has become a preferred model system to study gene function by microscopy. The use of Aequorea victoria green fluorescent protein (GFP) fused to proteins or targeting sequences of interest, further expanded upon the utility of C. elegans by labeling subcellular structures, which enables following their disposition during development or in the presence of genetic mutations. Fluorescent proteins with excitation and emission spectra different from that of GFP accelerated the use of multifluorophore imaging in real time. We have expanded the repertoire of fluorescent proteins for use in C. elegans by developing a codon-optimized version of Orange2 (CemOrange2). Proteins or targeting motifs fused to CemOrange2 were distinguishable from the more common fluorophores used in the nematode; such as GFP, YFP, and mKate2. We generated a panel of CemOrange2 fusion constructs, and confirmed they were targeted to their correct subcellular addresses by colocalization with independent markers. To demonstrate the potential usefulness of this new panel of fluorescent protein markers, we showed that CemOrange2 fusion proteins could be used to: 1) monitor biological pathways, 2) multiplex with other fluorescent proteins to determine colocalization and 3) gain phenotypic knowledge of a human ABCA3 orthologue, ABT-4, trafficking variant in the C. elegans model organism

    Implications of a W^+W^- (ZZ) - Higgs - t c-bar$ Interaction for e^+e^- -> t c-bar \nu_e \nu_e-bar, t c-bar e^+ e^-, t c-bar Z and for t -> cW^+W^-, cZZ in a Two Higgs Doublet Model

    Full text link
    The Standard Model with one extra Higgs doublet may give rise to enhanced TREE-LEVEL flavor-changing-scalar coupling of a neutral Higgs to a pair of top-charm quarks. This coupling may drive a large TREE-LEVEL effective W^+W^-(ZZ) - Higgs - t c-bar interaction. As a result we find that the reactions e^+e^- -> t c-bar \nu_e \nu_e-bar, t c-bar e^+ e^-, t c-bar Z and the two rare top decays t -> cW^+W^-, t -> cZZ become very sensitive probes of such an effective interaction. The most promising ones, e^+e^- -> t c-bar \nu_e \nu_e-bar, t c-bar e^+ e^-, may yield several hundreds and up to thousands of such events at the Next Linear Collider with a center of mass energy of \sqrt{s}=0.5 - 2 TeV if the mass of the lightest neutral Higgs is a few hundred GeV. The rare decays t -> cW^+W^- and t -> cZZ may be accessible at the LHC if the mass of the lightest neutral Higgs lies in the narrow window 150 GeV < m_h < 200 GeV.Comment: 18 pages, plain latex, 12 figures embadded in the text using epsfi
