    Silicon carbide semiconductor device fabrication and characterization

    A number of basic building blocks i.e., rectifying and ohmic contacts, implanted junctions, MOS capacitors, pnpn diodes and devices, such as, MESFETs on both alpha and beta SiC films were fabricated and characterized. Gold forms a rectifying contact on beta SiC. Since Au contacts degrade at high temperatures, these are not considered to be suitable for high temperature device applications. However, it was possible to utilize Au contact diodes for electrically characterizing SiC films. Preliminary work indicates that sputtered Pt or Pt/Si contacts on beta SiC films are someways superior to Au contacts. Sputtered Pt layers on alpha SiC films form excellent rectifying contacts, whereas Ni layers following anneal at approximately 1050 C provide an ohmic contact. It has demonstrated that ion implantation of Al in substrates held at 550 C can be successfully employed for the fabrication of rectifying junction diodes. Feasibility of fabricating pnpn diodes and platinum gated MESFETs on alpha SiC films was also demonstrated

    Social Distance and Reciprocity

    Contrary to the predictions of non-cooperative game theory, trust and reciprocity are commonly reported in simple games. We conduct a one-shot investment game to examine how social distance affects behavior in two-person exchanges. Two aspects of social distance are examined: ex post revelation of complete information on the second playerâ??s choice set and ex post revelation of information regarding the second playerâ??s identity. The results indicate that reciprocity is not affected by knowledge of the choice set, but depends critically on the possible revelation of the decision makerâ??s identity. That is, the possibility that the second playerâ??s identity (picture) is revealed to his/her counterpart has a profound effect on the degree of reciprocity extended.

    Ring baffle pressure distribution and slosh damping in large cylindrical tanks

    An investigation was conducted to determine the pressure loads and damping associated with rigid ring baffles in relatively large cylindrical tanks. The radial and circumferential pressure distribution, as well as the damping, was measured on a ring baffle subjected to fundamental antisymmetric slosh in a 284-cm-diameter rigid tank. Experimental and analytical data are presented as a function of slosh velocity or amplitude, baffle spacing, and baffle locations both above and below the liquid surface. Results suggest that pressure distributions and damping values can be determined from available theories for the design of single and multiple baffle configurations

    Rotational Symmetry Breaking in Sodium Doped Cuprates

    For reasonable parameters a hole bound to a Na^{+} acceptor in Ca_{2-x}Na_{x}CuO_{2}Cl_{2} has a doubly degenerate ground state whose components can be represented as states with even (odd) reflection symmetry around the x(y) -axes. The conductance pattern for one state is anisotropic as the tip of a tunneling microscope scans above the Cu-O-Cu bonds along the x(y)-axes. This anisotropy is pronounced at lower voltages but is reduced at higher voltages. Qualitative agreement with recent experiments leads us to propose this effect as an explanation of the broken local rotational symmetry.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figure

    Direct Evidence for a Magnetic f-electron Mediated Cooper Pairing Mechanism of Heavy Fermion Superconductivity in CeCoIn5

    To identify the microscopic mechanism of heavy-fermion Cooper pairing is an unresolved challenge in quantum matter studies; it may also relate closely to finding the pairing mechanism of high temperature superconductivity. Magnetically mediated Cooper pairing has long been the conjectured basis of heavy-fermion superconductivity but no direct verification of this hypothesis was achievable. Here, we use a novel approach based on precision measurements of the heavy-fermion band structure using quasiparticle interference (QPI) imaging, to reveal quantitatively the momentum-space (k-space) structure of the f-electron magnetic interactions of CeCoIn5. Then, by solving the superconducting gap equations on the two heavy-fermion bands Ekι,βE_k^{\alpha,\beta} with these magnetic interactions as mediators of the Cooper pairing, we derive a series of quantitative predictions about the superconductive state. The agreement found between these diverse predictions and the measured characteristics of superconducting CeCoIn5, then provides direct evidence that the heavy-fermion Cooper pairing is indeed mediated by the f-electron magnetism.Comment: 19 pages, 4 figures, Supplementary Information: 31 pages, 5 figure

    Exploring differences in psychological well-being and self-regulated learning in university student success

    Worldwide, there are increasing concerns about postsecondary students’ mental health and how student success is implicated. Previous research has established psychological well-being and self-regulated learning are important components of student success, however, there is a paucity of research examining the interplay between these factors during a semester-long course. In this study, 118 students in a learning-to-learn elective university course completed nine weekly online planning and reflection tools. Students planned for a study session, completed an academic engagement and a psychological well-being measure, then reflected on a challenge faced and described the strategy chosen to overcome that challenge. Findings revealed (a) students who reported always attaining their goals also reported higher overall psychological well-being, and (b) within-person patterns of psychological well-being and academic engagement over time may affect regulatory responses to challenge or vice versa. Implications for theory, research, and practice are discussed.

    The primary objective of this study was to analyse and interpret the water quality data set which has been collected from Herdsman Lake from April 1982 onwards under the direction of the State Planning Commission. The results of the data analysis were to provide information that would contribute to the Herdsman Lake Management Plan. In addition, modifications to the water quality monitoring programme were to be recommended where appropriate. Other water quality monitoring data has been included, where available, to aid interpretation of the SPC data set

    The Dual Formulation of Cosmic Strings and Vortices

    We study four dimensional systems of global, axionic and local strings. By using the path integral formalism, we derive the dual formulation of these systems, where Goldstone bosons, axions and missive vector bosons are described by antisymmetric tensor fields, and strings appear as a source for these tensor fields.     Can multistate dark matter annihilation explain the high-energy cosmic ray lepton anomalies?

    Multistate dark matter (DM) models with small mass splittings and couplings to light hidden sector bosons have been proposed as an explanation for the PAMELA/Fermi/H.E.S.S. high-energy lepton excesses. We investigate this proposal over a wide range of DM density profiles, in the framework of concrete models with doublet or triplet dark matter and a hidden SU(2) gauge sector that mixes with standard model hypercharge. The gauge coupling is bounded from below by the DM relic density, and the Sommerfeld enhancement factor is explicitly computable for given values of the DM and gauge boson masses M, mu and the (largest) dark matter mass splitting delta M_{12}. Sommerfeld enhancement is stronger at the galactic center than near the Sun because of the radial dependence of the DM velocity profile, which strengthens the inverse Compton (IC) gamma ray constraints relative to usual assumptions. We find that the PAMELA/Fermi/H.E.S.S. lepton excesses are marginally compatible with the model predictions, and with CMB and Fermi gamma ray constraints, for M ~ 800 GeV, mu ~ 200 MeV, and a dark matter profile with noncuspy Einasto parameters alpha > 0.20, r_s ~ 30 kpc. We also find that the annihilating DM must provide only a subdominant (< 0.4) component of the total DM mass density, since otherwise the boost factor due to Sommerfeld enhancement is too large.Comment: 20 pages, 12 figures; v2: Corrected branching ratio for ground state DM annihilations into leptons, leading to boost factors that are larger than allowed.
