The generalized Fenyes-Nelson model for free scalar field theory
The generalized Fenyes--Nelson model of quantum mechanics is applied to the
free scalar field. The resulting Markov field is equivalent to the Euclidean
Markov field with the times scaled by a common factor which depends on the
diffusion parameter. This result is consistent between Guerra's earlier work on
stochastic quantization of scalar fields. It suggests a deep connection between
Euclidean field theory and the stochastic interpretation of quantum mechanics.
The question of Lorentz covariance is also discussed.Comment: 6 page

Topology and Phases in Fermionic Systems
There can exist topological obstructions to continuously deforming a gapped
Hamiltonian for free fermions into a trivial form without closing the gap.
These topological obstructions are closely related to obstructions to the
existence of exponentially localized Wannier functions. We show that by taking
two copies of a gapped, free fermionic system with complex conjugate
Hamiltonians, it is always possible to overcome these obstructions. This allows
us to write the ground state in matrix product form using Grassman-valued bond
variables, and show insensitivity of the ground state density matrix to

Stringent limitations on reductive perturbation studies of nonplanar acoustic solitons in plasmas
More than fifty years ago, the Korteweg-de Vries equation was shown to describe not only solitary surface waves on shallow water, but also nonlinear ion-acoustic waves. Because of the algorithmic ease of using reductive perturbation theory, intensive research followed on a wide range of wave types. Soon, the formalism was extended to nonplanar modes by introducing a stretching designed to accommodate spherically and cylindrically symmetric ion-acoustic waves. Over the last two decades many authors followed this approach, but almost all have ignored the severe restrictions in parameter space imposed by the Ansatz. In addition, for other steps in the formalism, the justification is often not spelled out, leading to effects that are physically undesirable or ambiguous. Hence, there is a need to critically assess this approach to nonplanar modes and to use it with the utmost care, respecting the restrictions on its validity. Only inward propagation may be meaningfully studied and respect for weak nonlinearities of at most 1/10 implies that one cannot get closer to the axis or centre of symmetry than about 30 Debye lengths. Thus, one is in a regime where the modes are quasi-planar and not particularly interesting. Most papers disregard these constraints and hence reach questionable conclusions
Creamery organization and construction
Nearly two years ago the Iowa Agricultural Experiment station set out to answer a demand from scores of communities for accurate information on when, where, and how creamery associations might be organized with profit and how a satisfactory creamery should be bulit. Since that time, the station has assisted in the organization of different creamery companies and aided in the construction of eight different creamery buildings. The companies represent every type, from individual ownership to regularly incorporated associations and the buildings are of various types and sizes, ranging in cost from less than 6,000. Much valuable detailed information was secured which is now published so that it may be of service to other communities which face the question of organizing a creamery association and erecting a creamery building
Precision measurement of the branching ratio in the 6P3/2 decay of BaII with a single trapped ion
We present a measurement of the branching ratios from the 6P3/2 state of BaII
into all dipoleallowed decay channels (6S1/2, 5D3/2 and 5D5/2). Measurements
were performed on single 138Ba+ ions in a linear Paul trap with a
frequency-doubled mode-locked Ti:Sapphire laser resonant with the 6S1/2->6P3/2
transition at 455 nm by detection of electron shelving into the dark 5D5/2
state. By driving a pi Rabi rotation with a single femtosecond pulse, a
absolute measurement of the branching ratio to 5D5/2 state was performed.
Combined with a measurement of the relative decay rates into 5D3/2 and 5D5/2
states performed with long trains of highly attenuated 455 nm pulses, it
allowed the extraction of the absolute ratios of the other two decays. Relative
strengths normalized to unity are found to be 0.756+/-0.046, 0.0290+/-0.0015
and 0.215+/-0.0064 for 6S1/2, 5D3/2 and 5D5/2 respectively. This approximately
constitutes a threefold improvement over the best previous measurements and is
a sufficient level of precision to compare to calculated values for dipole

Vector meson spectral function and dilepton rate in an effective mean field model
We have studied the vector meson spectral function (VMSF) in a hot and dense
medium within an effective QCD model namely the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) and
its Polyakov Loop extended version (PNJL) with and without the effect of
isoscalar vector interaction (IVI). The effect of the IVI has been taken into
account using the ring approximation. We obtained the dilepton production rate
(DPR) using the VMSF and observed that at moderate temperature it is enhanced
in the PNJL model as compared to the NJL and Born rate due to the suppression

Auger electron intensity variations in oxygen-exposed large grain polycrystalline silver
Auger electron spectroscopic studies of the grains in oxygen-charged polycrystal-line silver show significant intensity variations as a function of crystallographic orientation. These intensity variations were observed by studies of the Auger images and line scans of the different grains (randomly selected) for each silver transition energy. The results can be attributed to the diffraction of the ejected Auger electrons and interpreted by corresponding changes in the electron mean-free path for inelastic scattering and by oxygen atom accumulation in the subsurface. The subsurface (second layer) octahedral sites increased in size because of surface relaxation and serve as a stable reservoir for the dissolved oxygen

An investigation of social activities of neurologically healthy older adults and relevance of the Social Activities Checklist (SOCACT-2)
Purpose: This preliminary study aimed to describe the type, range, partner and frequency of social activity among neurologically healthy older people in order to evaluate the content validity of the SOCial ACTivities Checklist (SOCACT-2).
Method: Ten neurologically healthy older people were recruited. Participants’ social activities were investigated through the completion of the SOCACT-2. Naturalistically occurring social activities were then recorded in a social activity diary over 28 consecutive days. Items recorded in the diaries were compared with SOCACT-2 items, and new items not included in the SOCACT-2 were noted. Frequency and location of participation was also recorded.
Results: All SOCACT-2 items were recorded in the diaries, with the exception of two. Findings suggest that another two SOCACT-2 items could be rephrased to more accurately reflect naturalistically occurring social activities, and two new categories of social activities were identified.
Conclusions: The results provide preliminary evidence for the relevance of the majority of SOCACT items. Revisions to four existing items included in the SOCACT-2, as well as the inclusion of two additional items may be indicated to capture the range of activities participated in by older people
Regions of beta 2 and beta 4 responsible for differences between the steady state dose-response relationships of the alpha 3 beta 2 and alpha 3 beta 4 neuronal nicotinic receptors
We constructed chimeras of the rat beta 2 and beta 4 neuronal nicotinic subunits to locate the regions that contribute to differences between the acetylcholine (ACh) dose-response relationships of the alpha 3 beta 2 and alpha 3 beta 4 receptors. Expressed in Xenopus oocytes, the alpha 3 beta 2 receptor displays an EC50 for ACh approximately 20-fold less than the EC50 of the alpha 3 beta 4 receptor. The apparent Hill slope (n(app)) of alpha 3 beta 2 is near one whereas the alpha 3 beta 4 receptor displays an n(app) near two. Substitutions within the first 120 residues convert the EC50 for ACh from one wild-type value to the other. Exchanging just beta 2:104-120 for the corresponding region of beta 4 shifts the EC50 of ACh dose-response relationship in the expected direction but does not completely convert the EC50 of the dose- response relationship from one wild-type value to the other. However, substitutions in the beta 2:104-120 region do account for the relative sensitivity of the alpha 3 beta 2 receptor to cytisine, tetramethylammonium, and ACh. The expression of beta 4-like (strong) cooperativity requires an extensive region of beta 4 (beta 4:1-301). Relatively short beta 2 substitutions (beta 2:104-120) can reduce cooperativity to beta 2-like values. The results suggest that amino acids within the first 120 residues of beta 2 and the corresponding region of beta 4 contribute to an agonist binding site that bridges the alpha and beta subunits in neuronal nicotinic receptors
