    Adult type granulosa cell tumor in adult testis: report of a case and review of the literature

    Granulosa cell tumors can be classified into juvenile and adult types and more commonly occur in ovaries. Adult testicular granulosa cell tumors are extremely rare and only 29 cases of adult type have previously been reported. We report here a 28-year old Caucasian man with a left testicular adult type granulosa cell tumor. The tumor measured 2.6×2.6×2.5 cm and was mitotically active (10/10 HPF). Immunohistochemical stains showed the tumor diffusely positive for inhibin and vimentin, and negative for epithelial membrane antigen, cytokeratins, synaptophysin, HMB-45, OCT-4, placental-like alkaline phosphatase and lymphoid markers.     Predicting Survival of East Texas Loblolly and Slash Pine Plantations Infected with Fusiform Rust

    Repeated measurement during 1982-1992 of East Texas Pine Plantation Research Project permanent plots in loblolly( Pinus taedaL .) and slash( Pinus elliottii Engelm.) pine plantations throughout East Texas were used to develop equations for predicting the future number of trees per acre. A typical condition of East Texas pine plantations is the incidence of fusiform rust( Cronatrium quercuum [Berk.] Miyabe ex Shirai f. sp. fusiforme). A regression procedure for fitting nonlinear systems of equations was used to fit survival models that considered the possibility that trees with no rust galls on the stem could either (1) remain uninfected and alive, (2) become infected yet still alive or (3) die. For infected stem so, only two possible outcomes were considered in the model:(1) remain infected and alive or (2) die.Analyses of the differences between predicted and observed values indicated no adverse trends for either of the two species.     Transpiration-Cooled Spacecraft-Insulation-Repair Fasteners

    Transpiration-cooled fasteners are proposed that operate like an open-loop heat pipe (self-tapping screws, bolts, and spikes) for use in on-orbit repair of thermal- insulation of a space shuttle or other spacecraft. By limiting the temperature rise of such a fastener and of the adjacent repair material and thermal protection system, the transpiration cooling would contribute to the ability of the repair to retain its strength and integrity in the high-heat-flux, oxidizing environment of reentry into the atmosphere of the Earth. A typical fastener according to the proposal would include a hollow refractory-metal, refractory-composite, or ceramic screw or bolt, the central cavity of which would be occupied by a porous refractory- metal or ceramic plug that would act as both a reservoir and a wick for a transpirant liquid. The plug dimensions, the plug material, and the sizes of the pores would be chosen in conjunction with the transpirant liquid so that (1) capillary pumping could be relied upon to transport the liquid to the heated surface, where the liquid would be vaporized, and (2) the amount of liquid would suffice for protecting against the anticipated heat flux and integrated heat load

    In 1987, tree content and tree taper functions for individual live standing planted loblolly and slash pine trees in East Texas were published 1. These equations were developed based on stem analyses of felled trees located adjacent to East Texas Pine Plantation Research Project (ETPPRP) permanent plots throughout East Texas. The 1987 report was based on 65 loblolly and 34 slash pine trees sampled during 1986.     In 1986, equations to estimate site index in loblolly and slash pine plantations in East Texas were published. These equations were developed using data collected from East Texas Pine Plantation Research Project (ETPPRP) permanent plots distributed throughout East Texas. The site index prediction equations were designed to estimate tree height 25 years from planting, ie., index age = 25 years. In the 1986 study, only data recorded during the first measurement cycle of the ETPPRP (1982- 1984) were available for analysis. Pairs of observed plantation age and a\u27verage !otal height of the ten tallest trees values were accessible from 150 permanent plots in loblolly pine plantations and 75 sample plots in slash pine plantations. For both species, approximately 85% of the data pairs were 1 o years or younger. In this update, new versions of site index prediction equations are presented for these two pine species based on information from repeated measurements of the ETPPRP permanent plots during 1982-1992. To date, almost all the ETPPRP plots have been measured four times. The loblolly pine site index equation is based on the analysis of 608 age-height pairs, and the slash pine site index prediction equation is derived from 264 age-height pairs. Original data pairs from the 1986 study are included in this new expanded data set. which represents a 3 to 4 fold increase in data size. As a result, the updated equations should quantify the productivity of the East Texas planted areas in a more accurate and reliable manner

    Drosophila suzukii Matsumura (spotted wing drosophila) has recently become a serious pest of a wide variety of fruit crops in the United States as well as in Europe, leading to substantial yearly crop losses. To enable basic and applied research of this important pest, we sequenced the D. suzukii genome to obtain a high-quality reference sequence. Here, we discuss the basic properties of the genome and transcriptome and describe patterns of genome evolution in D. suzukii and its close relatives.     Phase II study of oral bis (aceto) ammine dichloro (cyclohexamine) platinum (IV) (JM-216, BMS-182751) given daily x 5 in hormone refractory prostate cancer (HRPC)

    JM-216 is an orally bioavailable platinum compound with activity against many tumor models. The objective of this study was to determine the safety profile and anti-tumor activity of JM-216 in patients with hormone refractory prostate cancer (HRPC) when given orally daily × 5 days. In this open label phase II study JM-216 was administered orally at the dose of 120 mg/m 2 /d for 5 days every 4 weeks. Patients continued on the therapy until evidence of disease progression or intolerable toxicity developed. Dose escalation and de-escalation were allowed according to patient's tolerance. Thirty-nine patients were enrolled onto the study and received a total of 155 courses (median 2, range 1–16) of JM-216. Dose delays (77% of courses) and dose reductions (31% of courses) were common and were mainly due to myelosupression. Treatment was discontinued in 5 patients due to treatment related toxicities. One patient developed myelodysplastic syndrome 11 months after the start of treatment. The most frequent grade III or higher adverse events included thrombocytopenia (54%), neutropenia (52%), anemia (24%) nausea (13%), vomiting (16%) and diarrhea (28%). PSA response was assessed in 32 patients, 10 (26%) had partial response, 14 (36%) had stable disease while PSA progression was seen in 8 (21%) patients. Of 20 (54%) patients with measurable disease two patients had a documented partial response. Although JM-216 had moderate activity in HRPC when given on daily basis for 5 days, it is associated with significant treatment related toxicities in this patient population.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/45255/1/10637_2004_Article_5384229.pd

    HIF Transcription Factor Expression and Induction of Hypoxic Response Genes in a Retroperitoneal Angiosarcoma

    Angiosarcoma is a rare and highly aggressive tumor of endothelial origin. The molecular mechanisms driving angiosarcoma growth have not been fully elucidated, although autocrine stimulation by vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) secretion may play a role in the pathogenesis of this tumor. We identified a patient with a very rare form of angiosarcoma arising from the retroperitoneum. Immunohistochemical analysis demonstrated widespread up-regulation of the hypoxic response pathway as a mechanism of enhanced VEGF expression. Disordered regulation of the hypoxic response pathway can result in the expression of factors such as VEGF and erythropoietin, which may promote autocrine tumor growth in angiosarcoma

    Cumulative Burden of Morbidity Among Testicular Cancer Survivors After Standard Cisplatin-Based Chemotherapy: A Multi-Institutional Study

    Purpose In this multicenter study, we evaluated the cumulative burden of morbidity (CBM) among > 1,200 testicular cancer survivors and applied factor analysis to determine the co-occurrence of adverse health outcomes (AHOs). Patients and Methods Participants were ≤ 55 years of age at diagnosis, finished first-line chemotherapy ≥ 1 year previously, completed a comprehensive questionnaire, and underwent physical examination. Treatment data were abstracted from medical records. A CBM score encompassed the number and severity of AHOs, with ordinal logistic regression used to assess associations with exposures. Nonlinear factor analysis and the nonparametric dimensionality evaluation to enumerate contributing traits procedure determined which AHOs co-occurred. Results Among 1,214 participants, approximately 20% had a high (15%) or very high/severe (4.1%) CBM score, whereas approximately 80% scored medium (30%) or low/very low (47%). Increased risks of higher scores were associated with four cycles of either ifosfamide, etoposide, and cisplatin (odds ratio [OR], 1.96; 95% CI, 1.04 to 3.71) or bleomycin, etoposide, and cisplatin (OR, 1.44; 95% CI, 1.04 to 1.98), older attained age (OR, 1.18; 95% CI, 1.10 to 1.26), current disability leave (OR, 3.53; 95% CI, 1.57 to 7.95), less than a college education (OR, 1.44; 95% CI, 1.11 to 1.87), and current or former smoking (OR, 1.28; 95% CI, 1.02 to 1.63). CBM score did not differ after either chemotherapy regimen ( P = .36). Asian race (OR, 0.41; 95% CI, 0.23 to 0.72) and vigorous exercise (OR, 0.68; 95% CI, 0.52 to 0.89) were protective. Variable clustering analyses identified six significant AHO clusters (χ2 P < .001): hearing loss/damage, tinnitus (OR, 16.3); hyperlipidemia, hypertension, diabetes (OR, 9.8); neuropathy, pain, Raynaud phenomenon (OR, 5.5); cardiovascular and related conditions (OR, 5.0); thyroid disease, erectile dysfunction (OR, 4.2); and depression/anxiety, hypogonadism (OR, 2.8). Conclusion Factors associated with higher CBM may identify testicular cancer survivors in need of closer monitoring. If confirmed, identified AHO clusters could guide the development of survivorship care strategies
