    The effects of video game play on the characteristics of saccadic eye movements

    AbstractVideo game play has become a common leisure activity all around the world. To reveal possible effects of playing video games, we measured saccades elicited by video game players (VGPs) and non-players (NVGPs) in two oculomotor tasks. First, our subjects performed a double-step task. Second, we asked our subjects to move their gaze opposite to the appearance of a visual target, i.e. to perform anti-saccades. As expected on the basis of previous studies, VGPs had significantly shorter saccadic reaction times (SRTs) than NVGPs for all saccade types. However, the error rates in the anti-saccade task did not reveal any significant differences. In fact, the error rates of VGPs were actually slightly lower compared to NVGPs (34% versus 40%, respectively). In addition, VGPs showed significantly higher saccadic peak velocities in every saccade type compared to NVGP. Our results suggest that faster SRTs in VGPs were associated with a more efficient motor drive for saccades. Taken together, our results are in excellent agreement with earlier reports of beneficial video game effects through the general reduction in SRTs. Our data clearly provides additional experimental evidence for an higher efficiency of the VGPs on the one hand and refutes the notion of a reduced impulse control in VGPs on the other

    Stretchable persistent spin helices in GaAs quantum wells

    The Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit (SO) interactions in 2D electron gases act as effective magnetic fields with momentum-dependent directions, which cause spin decay as the spins undergo arbitrary precessions about these randomly-oriented SO fields due to momentum scattering. Theoretically and experimentally, it has been established that by fine-tuning the Rashba α\alpha and Dresselhaus β\beta couplings to equal fixed\it{fixed} strengths α=β\alpha=\beta, the total SO field becomes unidirectional thus rendering the electron spins immune to dephasing due to momentum scattering. A robust persistent spin helix (PSH) has already been experimentally realized at this singular point α=β\alpha=\beta. Here we employ the suppression of weak antilocalization as a sensitive detector for matched SO fields together with a technique that allows for independent electrical control over the SO couplings via top gate voltage VTV_T and back gate voltage VBV_B. We demonstrate for the first time the gate control of β\beta and the continuouslocking\it{continuous\,locking} of the SO fields at α=β\alpha=\beta, i.e., we are able to vary both α\alpha and β\beta controllably and continuously with VTV_T and VBV_B, while keeping them locked at equal strengths. This makes possible a new concept: "stretchable PSHs", i.e., helical spin patterns with continuously variable pitches PP over a wide parameter range. The extracted spin-diffusion lengths and decay times as a function of α/β\alpha/\beta show a significant enhancement near α/β=1\alpha/\beta=1. Since within the continuous-locking regime quantum transport is diffusive (2D) for charge while ballistic (1D) for spin and thus amenable to coherent spin control, stretchable PSHs could provide the platform for the much heralded long-distance communication 825\sim 8 - 25 μ\mum between solid-state spin qubits.Comment: 5 color figures, with supplementary info available on arXiv. arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap with arXiv:1403.351

    Consequences of Video Games on Oculomotor Behavior and Attention and Additional Implications for Healthy Aging

    Video games are a wide-spread leisure activity and are consumed around the world. There is increasing evidence that playing video games shortens reaction times in many tasks. A possible explanation is an alteration in the control of visual attention. In the first part of this dissertation, I will provide evidence that playing video games also shortens the reaction times in eye movements, that this reduction is not accompanied by reduced impulse control and that it is not explained by a faster shift of covert attention. Probably, playing video games increases the ability to extract visual information. In the second part, the eye movements in the elderly are analyzed. I will show that age has a profound impact on eye movements, decreasing performance in many ways. Finally I will try to connect these two areas, and show how video games could be used to counteract age-related decline.Videospiele sind mittlerweile eine allgegenwärtige Freizeitbeschäftigung weltweit. Aus Sicht der Wissenschaft herrscht Konsens, dass Videospielekonsum zu kürzeren manuellen Reaktionszeiten führt. Dem könnte eine effizientere visuelle Aufmerksamkeitskontrolle zu Grunde liegen. Der erste Teil dieser Dissertation zeigt, dass Videospieler schnellere Augenbewegungen haben. Dies ist jedoch nicht auf eine reduzierte Impulskontrolle oder schnellere Aufmerksamkeitsverlagerungen zurückzuführen. Vielmehr besitzen Videospieler vermutlich eine effizientere visuelle Informationsverarbeitung. Der zweite Teil der Dissertation beschäftigt sich mit dem Einfluss gesunden Alterns auf Augenbewegungen und zeigt eine deutliche, nicht-pathologische Abnahme in verschiedenen Parametern. Insgesamt soll am Ende eine Brücke zwischen beiden Themengebieten geschlagen und über die Möglichkeit der Anwendung von Videospielen zur Kompensation der altersbedingten Nachteile nachgedacht werden

    Spatial population expansion promotes the evolution of cooperation in an experimental Prisoner's Dilemma

    Cooperation is ubiquitous in nature, but explaining its existence remains a central interdisciplinary challenge. Cooperation is most difficult to explain in the Prisoner's Dilemma game, where cooperators always lose in direct competition with defectors despite increasing mean fitness. Here we demonstrate how spatial population expansion, a widespread natural phenomenon, promotes the evolution of cooperation. We engineer an experimental Prisoner's Dilemma game in the budding yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae to show that, despite losing to defectors in nonexpanding conditions, cooperators increase in frequency in spatially expanding populations. Fluorescently labeled colonies show genetic demixing of cooperators and defectors, followed by increase in cooperator frequency as cooperator sectors overtake neighboring defector sectors. Together with lattice-based spatial simulations, our results suggest that spatial population expansion drives the evolution of cooperation by (1) increasing positive genetic assortment at population frontiers and (2) selecting for phenotypes maximizing local deme productivity. Spatial expansion thus creates a selective force whereby cooperator-enriched demes overtake neighboring defector-enriched demes in a "survival of the fastest". We conclude that colony growth alone can promote cooperation and prevent defection in microbes. Our results extend to other species with spatially restricted dispersal undergoing range expansion, including pathogens, invasive species, and humans

    High resolution HLA analysis reveals independent class I haplotypes and amino-acid motifs protective for multiple sclerosis.

    We investigated association between HLA class I and class II alleles and haplotypes, and KIR loci and their HLA class I ligands, with multiple sclerosis (MS) in 412 European American MS patients and 419 ethnically matched controls, using next-generation sequencing. The DRB1*15:01~DQB1*06:02 haplotype was highly predisposing (odds ratio (OR) = 3.98; 95% confidence interval (CI) = 3-5.31; p-value (p) = 2.22E-16), as was DRB1*03:01~DQB1*02:01 (OR = 1.63; CI = 1.19-2.24; p = 1.41E-03). Hardy-Weinberg (HW) analysis in MS patients revealed a significant DRB1*03:01~DQB1*02:01 homozyote excess (15 observed; 8.6 expected; p = 0.016). The OR for this genotype (5.27; CI = 1.47-28.52; p = 0.0036) suggests a recessive MS risk model. Controls displayed no HW deviations. The C*03:04~B*40:01 haplotype (OR = 0.27; CI = 0.14-0.51; p = 6.76E-06) was highly protective for MS, especially in haplotypes with A*02:01 (OR = 0.15; CI = 0.04-0.45; p = 6.51E-05). By itself, A*02:01 is moderately protective, (OR = 0.69; CI = 0.54-0.87; p = 1.46E-03), and haplotypes of A*02:01 with the HLA-B Thr80 Bw4 variant (Bw4T) more so (OR = 0.53; CI = 0.35-0.78; p = 7.55E-04). Protective associations with the Bw4 KIR ligand resulted from linkage disequilibrium (LD) with DRB1*15:01, but the Bw4T variant was protective (OR = 0.64; CI = 0.49-0.82; p = 3.37-04) independent of LD with DRB1*15:01. The Bw4I variant was not associated with MS. Overall, we find specific class I HLA polymorphisms to be protective for MS, independent of the strong predisposition conferred by DRB1*15:01

    Recent advances in dual mode charge compensation for XPS analysis

    Dual mode charge compensation has been used successfully for many years to enable X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis of a variety of insulating samples. This approach uses a combination of low energy electrons and argon to compensate for positive charge build‐up during irradiation by X‐rays. Whilst this method works with no detectable side effects in most cases, it was recently reported that the chemical bonding states of some Cr(VI) oxides may be modified by prolonged exposure to the flood source. In this work, we demonstrate successful dual mode charge compensation of CrO3 with no discernible sample modification from the flood source. Under the same flood source conditions, we extend the analysis to other systems known to undergo reduction and present charge compensated XPS data for V2O5 and a copper‐based metal‐organic framework (MOF) showing little or no modification from the flood source, even with prolonged exposure

    Barriers to medical device innovation compromise timelines and costs from bench to bedside. Fragmented strategies by individual competitors are no longer sustainable. Pragmatically focused pre-competitive collaboration across stakeholders approaches innovation as an ecosystem. Desiloing experience and expertise encourages high-impact infrastructure efficiencies unique to pre-competitive constructs. Alignment of processes and objectives across the regulatory, reimbursement, clinical research, and clinical practice enterprises, with particular attention to the total product life cycle and continuous accrual of safety information, promotes more predictable equipoise for speed of access relative to residual safety concerns. Professional societies are well positioned to convene pre-competitive dialogue, facilitate alignment, and add perspective to equipoise within the innovation ecosystem

    Risk Profile and 3-Year Outcomes From the SYNTAX Percutaneous Coronary Intervention and Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting Nested Registries

    ObjectivesThe aim of this study was to evaluate the use of percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) and coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) in “real-world” patients unsuitable for the alternative treatment.BackgroundNo data are available on the risk profile and outcomes of patients that can only undergo PCI or CABG.MethodsIn the SYNTAX (Synergy between PCI with TAXUS and Cardiac Surgery) trial, a multidisciplinary Heart Team reached a consensus on whether PCI and CABG could result in clinical equipoise; if so, the patient was randomized. If not, the patient was enrolled in a CABG-ineligible PCI registry or PCI-ineligible CABG registry. A proportion (60%) of patients in the CABG registry was randomly assigned to be followed up for 5 years. No statistical comparisons were performed between randomized and registry patients. Major adverse cardiac or cerebrovascular event (MACCE) rates are presented as observational only.ResultsA total of 3,075 patients were treated in the SYNTAX trial; 198 (6.4%) and 1,077 (35.0%) patients were included in PCI and CABG registries, respectively. The main reason for inclusion in the CABG registry was too complex coronary anatomy (70.9%), and the main reason for inclusion in the PCI registry was too high-risk for surgery (70.7%). Three-year MACCE was 38.0% after PCI and 16.4% after CABG. Stratification by SYNTAX score terciles demonstrated a step-wise increase of MACCE rates in both PCI and CABG registries.ConclusionsThe SYNTAX Heart Team concluded that PCI and CABG remained the only treatment options for 6.4% and 35.0% of patients, respectively. Inoperable patients with major comorbidities that underwent PCI had high MACCE rates. In patients not suitable for PCI, surgical results were excellent.     Spinning Conformal Correlators

    We develop the embedding formalism for conformal field theories, aimed at doing computations with symmetric traceless operators of arbitrary spin. We use an index-free notation where tensors are encoded by polynomials in auxiliary polarization vectors. The efficiency of the formalism is demonstrated by computing the tensor structures allowed in n-point conformal correlation functions of tensors operators. Constraints due to tensor conservation also take a simple form in this formalism. Finally, we obtain a perfect match between the number of independent tensor structures of conformal correlators in d dimensions and the number of independent structures in scattering amplitudes of spinning particles in (d+1)-dimensional Minkowski space.Comment: 46 pages, 3 figures; V2: references added; V3: tiny misprint corrected in (A.9
