    Longitudinal analysis of the developing rhesus monkey brain using magnetic resonance imaging: birth to adulthood.

    We have longitudinally assessed normative brain growth patterns in naturalistically reared Macaca mulatta monkeys. Postnatal to early adulthood brain development in two cohorts of rhesus monkeys was analyzed using magnetic resonance imaging. Cohort A consisted of 24 rhesus monkeys (12 male, 12 female) and cohort B of 21 monkeys (11 male, 10 female). All subjects were scanned at 1, 4, 8, 13, 26, 39, and 52 weeks; cohort A had additional scans at 156 weeks (3 years) and 260 weeks (5 years). Age-specific segmentation templates were developed for automated volumetric analyses of the T1-weighted magnetic resonance imaging scans. Trajectories of total brain size as well as cerebral and subcortical subdivisions were evaluated over this period. Total brain volume was about 64 % of adult estimates in the 1-week-old monkey. Brain volume of the male subjects was always, on average, larger than the female subjects. While brain volume generally increased between any two imaging time points, there was a transient plateau of brain growth between 26 and 39 weeks in both cohorts of monkeys. The trajectory of enlargement differed across cortical regions with the occipital cortex demonstrating the most idiosyncratic pattern of maturation and the frontal and temporal lobes showing the greatest and most protracted growth. A variety of allometric measurements were also acquired and body weight gain was most closely associated with the rate of brain growth. These findings provide a valuable baseline for the effects of fetal and early postnatal manipulations on the pattern of abnormal brain growth related to neurodevelopmental disorders

    This article is a study of a La Follette’s Autobiography, the autobiography of the leading Wisconsin progressive Robert M. La Follette, which was published serially in 1911 and, in book form, in 1913. Rather than focusing, as have other historians, on which parts of La Follette’s account are accurate and can therefore be trusted, it explains instead why and how this major autobiography was conceived and written. The article shows that the autobiography was the product of a sustained, complex, and often fraught series of collaborations among La Follette’s family, friends, and political allies, and in the process illuminates the importance of affective ties as well as political ambition and commitment in bringing the project to fruition.     Glycerol selective oxidation to lactic acid over AuPt nanoparticles; enhancing reaction selectivity and understanding by support modification

    A high surface area mesoporous TiO2 material (110 m2/g) was synthesised using a nanocasting methodology, utilizing SBA‐15 as a hard template. This material was subsequently used as a support to prepare a series of 1 wt.% AuPt/TiO2 catalysts, synthesised by conventional impregnation and sol‐immobilisation. Catalysts were tested for the oxidation of glycerol to lactic acid and their performance was compared with corresponding catalysts supported on TiO2−P25, TiO2‐anatase and TiO2‐rutile. Higher rates of reaction and higher selectivity to lactic acid were observed over nanocast TiO2 supported catalysts. The increased performance of these catalysts was attributed to the presence of Si on the surface of the support, which likely arose from inefficient etching of the SBA‐15 template. The presence of Si in these catalysts was confirmed by X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy and electron energy loss spectroscopy. It was proposed that the residual Si present increases the Brþnsted acidity of the TiO2 support, which can lead to the formation of Lewis acid sites under reaction conditions; both sites are known to catalyse the dehydration of a primary alcohol in glycerol. Typically, under alkaline conditions, lactic acid is formed by the nucleophilic abstraction of a hydrogen. Thus, we propose that the improved selectivity to lactic acid over the nanocast TiO2 supported catalyst is attributed to the co‐operation of heterogeneous and homogeneous dehydration reactions, as both compete directly with a direct oxidation pathway, which leads to the formation of oxidation products such as glyceric and tartronic acid

    The Space Density of Intermediate-redshift, Extremely Compact, Massive Starburst Galaxies

This is an open access article distributed under the Creative Commons Attribution License, to view a copy of the license, see: https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/We present a measurement of the intrinsic space density of intermediate-redshift (z ∌ 0.5), massive (M * ∌ 1011 M ⊙), compact (R e ∌ 100 pc) starburst (ÎŁSFR ∌ 1000 M ⊙ yr−1 kpc−1) galaxies with tidal features indicative of them having undergone recent major mergers. A subset of them host kiloparsec-scale, > 1000 km s−1 outflows and have little indication of AGN activity, suggesting that extreme star formation can be a primary driver of large-scale feedback. The aim for this paper is to calculate their space density so we can place them in a better cosmological context. We do this by empirically modeling the stellar populations of massive, compact starburst galaxies. We determine the average timescale on which galaxies that have recently undergone an extreme nuclear starburst would be targeted and included in our spectroscopically selected sample. We find that massive, compact starburst galaxies targeted by our criteria would be selectable for ∌148−24+27 Myr and have an intrinsic space density nCS∌(1.1−0.3+0.5)×10−6Mpc−3 . This space density is broadly consistent with our z ∌ 0.5 compact starbursts being the most extremely compact and star-forming low-redshift analogs of the compact star-forming galaxies in the early universe, as well as them being the progenitors to a fraction of intermediate-redshift, post-starburst, and compact quiescent galaxies.Peer reviewe

    Generating entangled superpositions of macroscopically distinguishable states within a parametric oscillator

    We suggest a variant of the recently proposed experiment for the generation of a new kind of Schroedinger-cat states, using two coupled parametric down-converter nonlinear crystals [F. De Martini, Phys. Rev. Lett. 81, 2842 (1998)]. We study the parametric oscillator case and find that an entangled Schroedinger-cat type state of two cavities, whose mirrors are placed along the output beams of the nonlinear crystals, can be realized under suitable conditions.Comment: RevTeX 17 pages, 9 eps files for 7 figures.     The Ionization and Dynamics of the Makani Galactic Wind

It consists of a two-episode wind in which the slow, outer wind originated 400 Myr ago (Episode I; R I = 20 − 50 kpc) and the fast, inner wind is 7 Myr old (Episode II; R II = 0 − 20 kpc). While this wind contains ionized, neutral, and molecular gas, the physical state and mass of the most extended phase—the warm, ionized gas—are unknown. Here we present Keck optical spectra of the Makani outflow. These allow us to detect hydrogen lines out to r = 30–40 kpc and thus constrain the mass, momentum, and energy in the wind. Many collisionally excited lines are detected throughout the wind, and their line ratios are consistent with 200–400 km s−1 shocks that power the ionized gas, with v shock = σ wind. Combining shock models, density-sensitive line ratios, and mass and velocity measurements, we estimate that the ionized mass and outflow rate in the Episode II wind could be as high as those of the molecular gas: MIIHII∌MIIH2=(1−2)×109M⊙ and dM/dtIIHII∌dM/dtIIH2=170−250M⊙ yr−1. The outer wind has slowed, so that dM/dtIHII∌10M⊙ yr−1, but it contains more ionized gas, MIHII=5×109 M ⊙. The momentum and energy in the recent Episode II wind imply a momentum-driven flow (p “boost” ∌7) driven by the hot ejecta and radiation pressure from the Eddington-limited, compact starburst. Much of the energy and momentum in the older Episode I wind may reside in a hotter phase, or lie further into the circumgalactic medium.Peer reviewe

    Physical Properties of Massive Compact Starburst Galaxies with Extreme Outflows

We use data from Keck/NIRSPEC, SDSS, Gemini/GMOS, MMT, and Magellan/MagE to measure rest-frame optical and near-IR spectra of 14 starburst galaxies with extremely high star formation rate surface densities (mean ÎŁSFR ∌ 2000 M ⊙ yr−1 kpc−2) and powerful galactic outflows (maximum speeds v 98 ∌ 1000–3000 km s−1). Our unique data set includes an ensemble of both emission ([O ii] λλ3726,3729, HÎČ, [O iii] λλ4959,5007, Hα, [N ii] λλ6549,6585, and [S ii] λλ6716,6731) and absorption (Mg ii λλ2796,2803, and Fe ii λ2586) lines that allow us to investigate the kinematics of the cool gas phase (T ∌ 104 K) in the outflows. Employing a suite of line ratio diagnostic diagrams, we find that the central starbursts are characterized by high electron densities (median n e ∌ 530 cm−3), and high metallicity (solar or supersolar). We show that the outflows are most likely driven by stellar feedback emerging from the extreme central starburst, rather than by an AGN. We also present multiple intriguing observational signatures suggesting that these galaxies may have substantial Lyman continuum (LyC) photon leakage, including weak [S ii] nebular emission lines. Our results imply that these galaxies may be captured in a short-lived phase of extreme star formation and feedback where much of their gas is violently blown out by powerful outflows that open up channels for LyC photons to escape.Peer reviewedFinal Published versio

    The diastereoselective Meth-Cohn epoxidation of camphor-derived vinyl sulfones

    Some camphor-derived vinyl sulfones bearing oxygen functionality at the allylic position have been synthesized and their nucleophilic epoxidation reactions under Meth-Cohn conditions have been explored. The Îł-oxygenated camphor-derived vinyl sulfones underwent mildly diastereoselective nucleophilic epoxidation reactions, affording the derived sulfonyloxiranes in up to 5.8:1 dr. The observed diastereoselectivities were sensitive to the reaction conditions employed. In contrast, no stereoselectivity was observed in the nucleophilic epoxidation of the corresponding Îł-oxygenated isobornyl vinyl sulfone.
