    Effect of Hydro-Resistance Training on Bat Velocity

    The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of hydro-resistance training on bat velocity during mimicked baseball swings in twenty-five female college students. Subjects were pre-tested for bat velocity and assigned to dry land (n = 8), water (n = 8), and control (n = 9) groups. The dry land group swung a 737 g (26 oz) Easton T1 Thunderstick baseball bat for three sets of 15 swings, three days per week, for eight weeks. The water group performed the swings in shoulder deep water. The dry land and water groups also participated in mandatory team general resistance training three days per week. The control group performed no bat swing or resistance-training regimens. Mean bat velocity was measured with an electronic eye-timing device. A 3 x 2 (Group x Time) ANOVA with repeated measures was used for statistical analysis, followed up with Tukey’s post hoc test. Bat velocity decreased significantly for the dry land and water groups (24.0 ± 3.6 m/s to 20.6 ± 4.1 m/s and 23.8 ± 3.5 to 18.8 ± 4.1 m/s, respectively). Bat velocity did not change for the control group (21.5 ± 3.0 m/s to 20.2 ± 2.1 m/s). We speculate that the decreased bat velocity in the dry land and water groups was caused by the mandatory team general resistance-training program

    Hypervelocity impact study: The effect of impact angle on crater morphology

    The Space Power Institute (SPI) of Auburn University has conducted preliminary tests on the effects of impact angle on crater morphology for hypervelocity impacts. Copper target plates were set at angles of 30 deg and 60 deg from the particle flight path. For the 30 deg impact, the craters looked almost identical to earlier normal incidence impacts. The only difference found was in the apparent distribution of particle residue within the crater, and further research is needed to verify this. The 60 deg impacts showed marked differences in crater symmetry, crater lip shape, and particle residue distribution. Further research on angle effects is planned, because the particle velocities for these shots were relatively slow (7 km/s or less)

    Who is eating where? Findings from the SESAW study

    Objective: Foods prepared outside of the home have been linked to less-than-ideal nutrient profiles for health. We examine whether the locations where meals are prepared and consumed are associated with socio-economic predictors among women.Design: A cross-sectional study using self-reported data. We examined multiple locations where meals are prepared and consumed: (i) at home; (ii) fast food eaten at home; (iii) fast food eaten at the restaurant; (iv) total fast food; (v) non-fast-food restaurant meals eaten at home; (vi) non-fast-food restaurant meals eaten at the restaurant; and (vii) all non-fast-food restaurant meals. Multilevel logistic regression was used to determine whether frequent consumption of meals from these sources varied by level of education, occupation, household income and area-level disadvantage.Setting: Metropolitan Melbourne, Australia.Subjects: A total of 1328 women from forty-five neighbourhoods randomly sampled for the SocioEconomic Status and Activity in Women study.Results: Those with higher educational qualifications or who were not in the workforce (compared with those in professional employment) were more likely to report frequent consumption of meals prepared and consumed at home. High individual and area-level socio-economic characteristics were associated with a lower likelihood of frequent consumption of fast food and a higher likelihood of frequent consumption of meals from non-fast-food sources. The strength and significance of relationships varied by place of consumption.Conclusions: The source of meal preparation and consumption varied by socioeconomic predictors. This has implications for policy makers who need to continue to campaign to make healthy alternatives available in out-of-home food sources.<br /

    Enhanced surface transfer doping of diamond by V2O5 with improved thermal stability

    Surface transfer doping of hydrogen-terminated diamond has been achieved utilising V2O5 as a surface electron accepting material. Contact between the oxide and diamondsurface promotes the transfer of electrons from the diamond into the V2O5 as revealed by the synchrotron-based high resolution photoemission spectroscopy. Electrical characterization by Hall measurement performed before and after V2O5 deposition shows an increase in hole carrier concentration in the diamond from 3.0 × 1012 to 1.8 × 1013 cm−2 at room temperature. High temperature Hall measurements performed up to 300 °C in atmosphere reveal greatly enhanced thermal stability of the hole channel produced using V2O5 in comparison with an air-induced surface conduction channel. Transfer doping of hydrogen-terminated diamond using high electron affinity oxides such as V2O5 is a promising approach for achieving thermally stable, high performance diamond based devices in comparison with air-induced surface transfer dopin
