Spin-dynamics of the low-dimensional magnet (CH3)2NH2CuCl3
Dimethylammonium copper (II) chloride (also known as DMACuCl3 or MCCL) is a
low dimensional S=1/2 quantum spin system proposed to be an alternating
ferro-antiferromagnetic chain with similar magnitude ferromagnetic (FM) and
antiferromagnetic (AFM) exchange interactions. Subsequently, it was shown that
the existing bulk measurements could be adequately modeled by considering
DMACuCl3 as independent AFM and FM dimer spin pairs. We present here new
inelastic neutron scattering measurements of the spin-excitations in single
crystals of DMACuCl3. These results show significant quasi-one-dimensional
coupling, however the magnetic excitations do not propagate along the expected
direction. We observe a band of excitations with a gap of 0.95 meV and a

The Sextet Arcs: a Strongly Lensed Lyman Break Galaxy in the ACS Spectroscopic Galaxy Survey towards Abell 1689
We present results of the HST Advanced Camera for Surveys spectroscopic
ground-based redshift survey in the field of A1689. We measure 98 redshifts,
increasing the number of spectroscopically confirmed objects by sixfold. We
present two spectra from this catalog of the Sextet Arcs, images which arise
from a strongly-lensed Lyman Break Galaxy (LBG) at a redshift of z=3.038.
Gravitational lensing by the cluster magnifies its flux by a factor of ~16 and
produces six separate images with a total r-band magnitude of r_625=21.7. The
two spectra, each of which represents emission from different regions of the
LBG, show H I and interstellar metal absorption lines at the systemic redshift.
Significant variations are seen in Ly-alpha profile across a single galaxy,
ranging from strong absorption to a combination of emission plus absorption. A
spectrum of a third image close to the brightest arc shows Ly-alpha emission at
the same redshift as the LBG, arising from either another spatially distinct
region of the galaxy, or from a companion galaxy close to the LBG. Taken as a
group, the Ly-alpha equivalent width in these three spectra decreases with
increasing equivalent width of the strongest interstellar absorption lines. We
discuss how these variations can be used to understand the physical conditions
in the LBG. Intrinsically, this LBG is faint, ~0.1L*, and forming stars at a
modest rate, ~4 solar masses per year. We also detect absorption line systems
toward the Sextet Arcs at z=2.873 and z=2.534. The latter system is seen across

Microwave observations of spinning dust emission in NGC6946
We report new cm-wave measurements at five frequencies between 15 and 18GHz
of the continuum emission from the reportedly anomalous "region 4" of the
nearby galaxy NGC6946. We find that the emission in this frequency range is
significantly in excess of that measured at 8.5GHz, but has a spectrum from
15-18GHz consistent with optically thin free-free emission from a compact HII
region. In combination with previously published data we fit four emission
models containing different continuum components using the Bayesian spectrum
analysis package radiospec. These fits show that, in combination with data at
other frequencies, a model with a spinning dust component is slightly preferred
to those that possess better-established emission mechanisms.Comment: submitted MNRA
Further Sunyaev-Zel'dovich observations of two Planck ERCSC clusters with the Arcminute Microkelvin Imager
We present follow-up observations of two galaxy clusters detected blindly via
the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) effect and released in the Planck Early Release
Compact Source Catalogue. We use the Arcminute Microkelvin Imager, a dual-array
14-18 GHz radio interferometer. After radio source subtraction, we find a SZ
decrement of integrated flux density -1.08+/-0.10 mJy toward PLCKESZ
G121.11+57.01, and improve the position measurement of the cluster, finding the
centre to be RA 12 59 36.4, Dec +60 04 46.8, to an accuracy of 20 arcseconds.
The region of PLCKESZ G115.71+17.52 contains strong extended emission, so we
are unable to confirm the presence of this cluster via the SZ effect.Comment: 4 tables, 3 figures, revised after referee's comments and resubmitted

An Analytic Function of Lunar Surface Temperature for Exospheric Modeling
We present an analytic expression to represent the lunar surface temperature as a function of Sun-state latitude and local time. The approximation represents neither topographical features nor compositional effects and therefore does not change as a function of selenographic latitude and longitude. The function reproduces the surface temperature measured by Diviner to within +/-10 K at 72% of grid points for dayside solar zenith angles of less than 80, and at 98% of grid points for nightside solar zenith angles greater than 100. The analytic function is least accurate at the terminator, where there is a strong gradient in the temperature, and the polar regions. Topographic features have a larger effect on the actual temperature near the terminator than at other solar zenith angles. For exospheric modeling the effects of topography on the thermal model can be approximated by using an effective longitude for determining the temperature. This effective longitude is randomly redistributed with 1 sigma of 4.5deg. The resulting ''roughened'' analytical model well represents the statistical dispersion in the Diviner data and is expected to be generally useful for future models of lunar surface temperature, especially those implemented within exospheric simulations that address questions of volatile transport
The Space Motion of the Globular Cluster NGC 6397
As a by-product of high-precision, ultra-deep stellar photometry in the
Galactic globular cluster NGC 6397 with the Hubble Space Telescope, we are able
to measure a large population of background galaxies whose images are nearly
point-like. These provide an extragalactic reference frame of unprecedented
accuracy, relative to which we measure the most accurate absolute proper motion
ever determined for a globular cluster. We find mu_alpha = 3.56 +/- 0.04 mas/yr
and mu_delta = -17.34 +/- 0.04 mas/yr. We note that the formal statistical
errors quoted for the proper motion of NGC 6397 do not include possible
unavoidable sources of systematic errors, such as cluster rotation. These are
very unlikely to exceed a few percent. We use this new proper motion to
calculate NGC 6397's UVW space velocity and its orbit around the Milky Way, and
find that the cluster has made frequent passages through the Galactic disk.Comment: 5 pages including 3 figures, accepted for publication in the

Two-Dimensional Distribution of Volatiles in the Lunar Regolith from Space Weathering Simulations
We present simulations of space weathering effects on ice deposits in regions of permanent shadow on the Moon. These Monte Carlo simulations follow the effects of space weathering processes on the distribution of the volatiles over time. The model output constrains the coherence of volatile deposits with depth, lateral separation, and time. The results suggest that ice sheets become broken and buried with time. As impacts begin to puncture an initially coherent surficial ice sheet, small areas with a deficit of ice compared to surrounding areas are formed first. As time progresses, holes become prevalent and the anomalous regions are local enhancements of ice concentration in a volume. The 3-D distribution is also heterogeneous because the ice is buried to varying depths in different locations. Analysis of the coherence of ice on 10 cm scales predicts that putative ice sheets in anomalous radar craters are 1000 Myr old. For future in situ analysis of cold trap volatiles, a horizontal range of 10 m is sufficient to acquire surface-based measurements of heterogeneously distributed ice. Is the Alma Ata vision of comprehensive primary health care viable? Findings from an international project
BACKGROUND: The 4-year (2007 2011) Revitalizing Health for All international research program (http://www.
globalhealthequity.ca/projects/proj_revitalizing/index.shtml) supported 20 research teams located in 15 lowand
middle-income countries to explore the strengths and weaknesses of comprehensive primary health
care (CPHC) initiatives at their local or national levels. Teams were organized in a triad comprised of a senior
researcher, a new researcher, and a 'research user' from government, health services, or other organizations
with the authority or capacity to apply the research findings. Multiple regional and global team capacityenhancement
meetings were organized to refine methods and to discuss and assess cross-case findings.
OBJECTIVE: Most research projects used mixed methods, incorporating analyses of qualitative data (interviews
and focus groups), secondary data, and key policy and program documents. Some incorporated historical
case study analyses, and a few undertook new surveys. The synthesis of findings in this report was derived
through qualitative analysis of final project reports undertaken by three different reviewers.
RESULTS: Evidence of comprehensiveness (defined in this research program as efforts to improve equity in
access, community empowerment and participation, social and environmental health determinants, and
intersectoral action) was found in many of the cases.
CONCLUSION: Despite the important contextual differences amongst the different country studies, the
similarity of many of their findings, often generated using mixed methods, attests to certain transferable
health systems characteristics to create and sustain CPHC practices. These include:
1. Well-trained and supported community health workers (CHWs) able to work effectively with
marginalized communities
2. Effective mechanisms for community participation, both informal (through participation in projects
and programs, and meaningful consultation) and formal (though program management structures)
3. Co-partnership models in program and policy development (in which financial and knowledge supports
from governments or institutions are provided to communities, which retain decision-making
powers in program design and implementation)
4. Support for community advocacy and engagement in health and social systems decision making
These characteristics, in turn, require a political context that supports state responsibilities for redistributive
health and social protection measures.IS
Barriers and enablers to uptake of agroecological and regenerative farming practices, and stakeholder views about âliving labsâ
This report forms the second component of a Defra-sponsored research project entitled âEvaluating the productivity, environmental sustainability and wider impacts of agroecological compared to conventional farming systemsâ. The first component comprised a rapid evidence review of regenerative/agroecological farming systems. This second component describes and discusses the results of a survey to explore i) farmer and stakeholder definitions of agroecological and regenerative farming, ii) the barriers to the adoption of agroecological and regenerative farming, and iii) farmer and stakeholder views towards the concept of âliving labsâ as a way to share research and learnings about agroecological/regenerative farming (Figure 1)
AMI observations of Lynds Dark Nebulae: further evidence for anomalous cm-wave emission
Observations at 14.2 to 17.9 GHz made with the AMI Small Array towards
fourteen Lynds Dark Nebulae with a resolution of 2' are reported. These sources
are selected from the SCUBA observations of Visser et al. (2001) as small
angular diameter clouds well matched to the synthesized beam of the AMI Small
Array. Comparison of the AMI observations with radio observations at lower
frequencies with matched uv-plane coverage is made, in order to search for any
anomalous excess emission which can be attributed to spinning dust. Possible
emission from spinning dust is identified as a source within a 2' radius of the
Scuba position of the Lynds dark nebula, exhibiting an excess with respect to
lower frequency radio emission. We find five sources which show a possible
spinning dust component in their spectra. These sources have rising spectral
indices in the frequency range 14.2--17.9 GHz. Of these five one has already
been reported, L1111, we report one new definite detection, L675, and three new
probable detections (L944, L1103 and L1246). The relative certainty of these
detections is assessed on the basis of three criteria: the extent of the
emission, the coincidence of the emission with the Scuba position and the
likelihood of alternative explanations for the excess. Extended microwave
emission makes the likelihood of the anomalous emission arising as a
consequence of a radio counterpart to a protostar or a proto-planetary disk
unlikely. We use a 2' radius in order to be consistent with the IRAS
identifications of dark nebulae (Parker 1988), and our third criterion is used
in the case of L1103 where a high flux density at 850 microns relative to the
FIR data suggests a more complicated emission spectrum.Comment: submitted MNRA
