William Duane and his Visit to Colombia of 1823

    Get PDF
William Duane was born in 1760. According to his own account, the birth occurred in New York State, though there is evidence that he was in fact born in Newfoundland, a region which was in regular contact with Southeast Ireland during the eighteenth century (Little 2003). Born to Irish Catholic parents, Duane left North America before the Revolution. He was to spend almost three decades outside of North America; first in Ireland, followed by a brief residence in England, and a spell in India. When he returned to the United States, approaching middle age, he faced continual questioning from his political opponents of his right to reside in the country

Some Aspects of the Current State of Foreign Language Education In the United States.

    Get PDF
There is no reference to language in either the American Declaration of Independence (1776) or the Constitution of the United States (1789). Hence by default the Constitution places responsibility for education in the hands of the individual states. There is, therefore, no federal policy on languages in education - the only exception being the 1990 Native American Languages Act, which states that it is the goal of the United States to preserve these languages. The United States education system is characterised by a high degree of local autonomy and decentralisation. Though there is a federal Department of Education, primary responsibility for education rests on the 'several states'. In just about every aspect of public administration there exists a long tradition of suspicion towards conceding power to the government in Washington. Indeed it is quite common to hear suggestions that the federal Department of Education be abolished, and a number of Republican candidates for President have included this among their policies

Strategies to Overcome Barriers to a More Effective Leadership Style

    Get PDF
Disengaged employees and leaders lacking the skills to engage their employees account for an estimated $300 billion annual loss through lowered productivity. This study focused on a leader\u27s understanding of employee engagement as a means of increasing productivity. Utilizing the theory of leadership styles and expectancy theory for the conceptual framework, this descriptive study explored strategies small business leaders have used to develop effective leadership styles to improve workplace engagement. Interviews with a purposive sample of 20 highest-ranking executives at small businesses with between 50 and 250 employees in the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States were analyzed using the modified van Kaam method to identify themes. The analysis of leaders\u27 actions regarding strategies for overcoming barriers to employee engagement indicated a strategic need for meetings, open and candid communication, and more dedicated time to employees to avoid disengagement. The exploration of these strategies provides insight that organizational leaders could use to implement effective practices. The results of this study could contribute to social change by facilitating proactive recognition by organizational leaders of strategies for overcoming barriers preventing the adoption of a more effective leadership style. These contributions could assist leaders in reducing bureaucratization and shifting attitudes from impersonal judgment and extreme separation to engaging employees. These shifts could result in improving the employees\u27 outlook on their future at their respective organizations, which may, in turn, positively impact their relationships with their families and communities

Antiplane elastic wave propagation in pre-stressed periodic structures; tuning, band gap switching and invariance

    Get PDF
The effect of nonlinear elastic pre-stress on antiplane elastic wave propagation in a two-dimensional periodic structure is investigated. The medium consists of cylindrical annuli embedded on a periodic square lattice in a uniform host material. An identical inhomogeneous deformation is imposed in each annulus and the theory of small-on-large is used to find the incremental wave equation governing subsequent small-amplitude antiplane waves. The plane-wave-expansion method is employed in order to determine the permissable eigenfrequencies. It is found that pre-stress significantly affects the band gap structure for Mooney–Rivlin and Fung type materials, allowing stop bands to be switched on and off. However, it is also shown that for a specific class of materials, their phononic properties remain invariant under nonlinear deformation, permitting some rather interesting behaviour and leading to the possibility of phononic cloaks
