    Sensitivity analysis of surface runoff generation for pluvial urban flooding

    Significant advances have been made in recent times in the domain of integrated hydraulic modelling of urban flooding. Development of a physically based model for dual drainage concept, in which urban surface is treated as a network of open channels and ponds (major system) connected to the sewer network (minor system), has been a step forward (Boonyaaroonnet et al. 2006). However, generation of reasonably realistic surface network is the main concern in this methodology (Djordjevic et al. 2005). This paper presents the results obtained by new developed tools (Boonya-aroonnet et al. 2007) for enhancing the potential of 1D/1D modelling by more accurate GIS-based automatic generation of surface network features. The application of these tools to a real life case study is discussed. Simplification of high resolution of LiDAR Digital Terrain Model (DTM) by re-sampling original 1x1m grid to larger sizes is necessary and sensitivity is analysed. Number of ponds removed and cumulative and discrete volume loss charts were generated and used to determine the suitable threshold values for removal of small ponds. In generating the pathways cross-section geometry, multi-criteria optimization technique was deployed to study the sensitivity of the input parameters on the geometries generated and appropriate parameter selection process

    The concept of governance and leadership are intertwined. Good governance and leadership is critical for the achievement of results. It is often said that no country can develop beyond the level of its leadership. The predicament of Nigeria in terms of underdevelopment and corruption can be adduced to the problem of leadership and governance. Nigeria needs committed leaders who will govern with integrity and doggedly influence its human and natural resources toward the actualization of sustainable national development. This paper is descriptive; it looks at the place of leadership and good governance in the actualization of overall national development in Nigeria. Transformational leadership theory and contingency theory of leadership viewpoints are examined vis a vis diverse impediments to national development in Nigeria, as vital to feasible and substantial national development; The paper recommends that; The leaders who govern should be made accountable by publicly declaring what they have been able to achieve in terms of performance as well as how much was expended in every sector on a yearly basis; Auditors with integrity should be made to verify their claims in order to ascertain the genuineness of the claims; Corrupt leaders should be brought to book and made to face necessary and lawful penalties without fear or favour; and elections made free and fair and not rigged.     SDTrimSP Simulations of Solar Wind Sputtering on Mercury: A Sensitivity Study to Establish a Best-Practice

    Understanding the role solar wind (SW) ions play on surface sputtering of Mercury is critical to any exosphere model. The most common models use binary collision approximation (BCA) tools such as SDTrimSP. However, this state-of-the-art tool has many user-specific inputs and that are not immediately clear for more complex substrates such as minerals on celestial surfaces. These include surface binding energies, SW compositions, static vs. dynamic, and impact energy. Previous research has not kept these parameters consistent, making it unclear how sensitive sputtering behavior is to these parameters. As such, we have conducted a detailed sensitivity study into SDTrimSP parameters for simulating SW impacts. We have considered how several important simulation choices affect sputtering yields, composition, energy distribution, and damage. Results show that sputtering behavior is highly dependent on these parameters and can be used to establish a best practice methodology for SDTrimSP

    The Crossroads of Interprofessionalism: Four Avenues of Collaboration at the Wegmans School of Pharmacy

    Objective: The utilization of interprofessional education and collaborative practice delivers optimal health services and improves patient outcomes. Training future healthcare providers in an integrated environment promotes a “collaborative practice-ready” workforce. The aim of this study was to identify ongoing specific interprofessional collaborative projects and promote their awareness among faculty at the St. John Fisher College Wegmans School of Pharmacy. Methods: Faculty members were surveyed to identify the ongoing interprofessional collaborative initiatives among pharmacy faculty. Results: A total of four collaborative practices were identified among faculty: ambulatory care, assisted-living, didactic, and assessment. The ambulatory care setting at an osteoporosis clinic provides patient-centered care with a clinical component. Each patient with a new diagnosis or change in medication therapy receives education/counseling from a pharmacist, a registered nurse for medication administration and a physician for a physical exam. In the assisted-living setting, pharmacy and nursing students are paired to conduct a high-level health assessment in their respective disciplines. Didactic interprofessional efforts are being conducted to create a flexible and comprehensive pain education curriculum. Physicians, dentists, nurses, pharmacists, psychologists, chiropractors, and oriental medicine practitioners will develop the curriculum. The pain module will be adaptable for interprofessional education activities. Finally, recognizing the similarities in accreditation standards for communication and professionalism, the School of Pharmacy and the NY Chiropractic School are sharing strategies and rubrics for assessing these outcomes. Implications: The survey revealed a broader range of interprofessional collaborations than was originally suspected. The school will continue to foster and support interprofessional education and collaborative practice

    Rigorous results on superconducting ground states for attractive extended Hubbard models

    We show that the exact ground state for a class of extended Hubbard models including bond-charge, exchange, and pair-hopping terms, is the Yang "eta-paired" state for any non-vanishing value of the pair-hopping amplitude, at least when the on-site Coulomb interaction is attractive enough and the remaining physical parameters satisfy a single constraint. The ground state is thus rigorously superconducting. Our result holds on a bipartite lattice in any dimension, at any band filling, and for arbitrary electron hopping.Comment: 12 page

    Deformation independent open brane metrics and generalized theta parameters

    We investigate the consequences of generalizing certain well established properties of the open string metric to the conjectured open membrane and open Dp-brane metrics. By imposing deformation independence on these metrics their functional dependence on the background fields can be determined including the notorious conformal factor. In analogy with the non-commutativity parameter ΘΌΜ\Theta^{\mu\nu} in the string case, we also obtain `generalized' theta parameters which are rank q+1 antisymmetric tensors (polyvectors) for open Dq-branes and rank 3 for the open membrane case. The expressions we obtain for the open membrane quantities are expected to be valid for general background field configurations, while the open D-brane quantities are only valid for one parameter deformations. By reducing the open membrane data to five dimensions, we show that they, modulo a subtlety with implications for the relation between OM-theory and NCYM, correctly generate the open string and open D2-data.Comment: 24 pages, LaTe

    A Matrix Model for the Null-Brane

    Sequential cavity method for computing free energy and surface pressure

    We propose a new method for the problems of computing free energy and surface pressure for various statistical mechanics models on a lattice Zd\Z^d. Our method is based on representing the free energy and surface pressure in terms of certain marginal probabilities in a suitably modified sublattice of Zd\Z^d. Then recent deterministic algorithms for computing marginal probabilities are used to obtain numerical estimates of the quantities of interest. The method works under the assumption of Strong Spatial Mixing (SSP), which is a form of a correlation decay. We illustrate our method for the hard-core and monomer-dimer models, and improve several earlier estimates. For example we show that the exponent of the monomer-dimer coverings of Z3\Z^3 belongs to the interval [0.78595,0.78599][0.78595,0.78599], improving best previously known estimate of (approximately) [0.7850,0.7862][0.7850,0.7862] obtained in \cite{FriedlandPeled},\cite{FriedlandKropLundowMarkstrom}. Moreover, we show that given a target additive error Ï”>0\epsilon>0, the computational effort of our method for these two models is (1/Ï”)O(1)(1/\epsilon)^{O(1)} \emph{both} for free energy and surface pressure. In contrast, prior methods, such as transfer matrix method, require exp⁥((1/Ï”)O(1))\exp\big((1/\epsilon)^{O(1)}\big) computation effort.Comment: 33 pages, 4 figure
