Development of SRF Cavity Tuners for CERN

    Get PDF
Superconducting RF cavity developments are currently on-going for new accelerator projects at CERN such as HIE ISOLDE and HL-LHC. Mechanical RF tuning systems are required to compensate cavity frequency shifts of the cavities due to temperature, mechanical, pressure and RF effects on the cavity geometry. A rich history and experience is available for such mechanical tuners developed for existing RF cavities. Design constraints in the context of HIE ISOLDE and HL-LHC such as required resolution, space limitation, reliability and maintainability have led to new concepts in the tuning mechanisms. This paper will discuss such new approaches, their performances and planned developments

Under the editorship of Giuseppe Bettoni Territorial management is a complicated, multidisciplinary and conflict-ridden business. Public players all have their own vision of what it is. This, combined with their perception of what constitutes the public interest, generates institutional competition, divergences on the very essence of the policies to be conducted, and antagonism. This book was inspired by a conference of geographers, political scientists, legal experts, economists, and local and regional decision-makers who decided to try and make sense of the interactions between the different levels of public action. It addresses a range of subjects: the concept of territorial cohesion in the European Union and how it has developed, relations between Washington and the federal states, Italian decentralisation, the importance of the metropolitan regions in the United States, the creation of the Greater Paris Area, the reform of German federalism, and Catalonia and its experience of urban regeneration. The authors draw on these case studies to demonstrate that territorial governance is an eminently geopolitical matter. Resulting conflicts often compromise the success of public policies and the competitiveness of the territories. Sometimes, however, they trigger innovation and initiative.

Comprehensive classification of symptoms and signs reported among 218 patients with acute HIV-1 infection

Acute HIV-1 illness presents a wide range of clinical manifestations. We assessed a classification and data reduction of clinical features among 218 patients with acute HIV-1 infection enrolled in four prospective seroincidence studies. Factor analysis allows the definition of eight factors based on groups of symptoms and signs: gastrointestinal transit disturbances, weight loss/abdominal pain, lymphadenopathy, myalgia/arthralgia, neurologic features, constitutional and mucocutaneous features, oral candidiasis, and anorexia/pharyngitis. These groups reflected the main target systems involved at the time of acute HIV-1 disease. Grouping of symptoms and signs based on groups of patients is potentially more informative than observations made on individual patients. It might facilitate diagnosis, suggest pathogenic mechanisms and reduce the number of variables for characterizing acute HIV-1 illness

Molecular characterization of the intact mouse muscle spindle using a multi-omics approach

The proprioceptive system is essential for the control of coordinated movement, posture, and skeletal integrity. The sense of proprioception is produced in the brain using peripheral sensory input from receptors such as the muscle spindle, which detects changes in the length of skeletal muscles. Despite its importance, the molecular composition of the muscle spindle is largely unknown. In this study, we generated comprehensive transcriptomic and proteomic datasets of the entire muscle spindle isolated from the murine deep masseter muscle. We then associated differentially expressed genes with the various tissues composing the spindle using bioinformatic analysis. Immunostaining verified these predictions, thus establishing new markers for the different spindle tissues. Utilizing these markers, we identified the differentiation stages the spindle capsule cells undergo during development. Together, these findings provide comprehensive molecular characterization of the intact spindle as well as new tools to study its development and function in health and disease
