Darkness, fire, and pain : finding strength through endurance in Mildred Haun\u27s The hawk\u27s done gone and other stories

    Get PDF
The purpose of this study is to point out the literary importance of Mildred Eunice Haun, born in 1911 in Hamblen County, Tennessee. Haun provided an authentic depiction of Appalachian life, having lived in the hills of East Tennessee until she moved to the home of her aunt and uncle in Franklin in 1 927 for the purpose of attending high school and college. My research for the thesis included perusing Haun\u27s personal papers located in the Vanderbilt Library Special Collections, interviewing personal acquaintances from the literary world, and searching for criticism of Haun\u27 s texts. During her years at Vanderbilt, Haun gained the attention of John Crowe Ransom and Donald Davidson and wrote a series of short stories that were published in 1940 as The Hawk\u27s Done Gone. In addition, her unpublished M.A. thesis on Cocke County ballads is one of the most significant and complete collections of its type, according to Davidson and others. This thesis examines the life of Mildred Haun in some detail, but it focuses on an analysis of relationships in the 1968 edition of her book The Hawk\u27s Done Gone and Other Stories

It\u27S Time to Face The Music: Singing the Praises of Popular Music in Today\u27s Curriculum

This study explored the possibility of incorporating popular music into the curriculum in order to increase student motivation in a time of standardization. As a classroom teacher, I have witnessed students, time after time become uninterested in the present curriculum. I was curious to find out if by incorporating popular music into the lessons of teachers, students would be more apt to learn in school. Cultural inquiry was used as the main method to guide the collection and analysis of the information from the participants through a cultural studies theoretical framework

An African American Male Perspective on Medication, Schizophrenia, and Crime

    Get PDF
Mental health disparities in African American males contribute disproportionate rates of incarceration treatment access. There is a significant need to revise current mental health practices to address treatment barriers. The purpose of this study was to understand whether medication management could reduce criminality in violent African American males diagnosed with schizophrenia. A phenomenological examination of psychiatric perceptions and psychological treatment coupled with race was performed, utilizing the critical race and rational choice theory. Two research questions were developed to understand effective medication management and what barriers are present that cause noncompliance resulting in criminal activity. A hermeneutic phenomenological approach was used examining 8-10 mental health and criminal justice professionals\u27 perceptions of medication and its effects on violent schizophrenic African American males. Anonymous questionnaires with pre-addressed stamped envelopes was sent to a national counseling center and a law enforcement agency. Data were analyzed through the application of qualitative research data, coding, and development of themes. Fifty questionnaires were mailed out, and 11 responses were returned. Three themes of medication management, medication knowledge, and managing care were explored. Data analysis and results coincided with previous research. Positive social change will be affected through professionals enforcing early intervention and education of the effectiveness of medication and how it can reduce incarceration

Development And Application Of A Methodology To Estimate Regional Natural Conditions For Trace Metals In Marine Sediments Of Southcentral Alaska's Coastal Region

Thesis (Ph.D.) University of Alaska Fairbanks, 2010Increasing levels of resource development and population growth along Alaska's relatively pristine coastline require responsible environmental stewardship that is based on scientifically defensible monitoring and assessment. This thesis develops a methodology to assess the spatial distribution of coastal sediment trace metals and estimate their natural condition along Alaska's coastline. Marine sediments provide a better integrated long-term signal for naturally occurring and anthropogenic chemicals than repeated water measurements. The first of three manuscripts reports on marine sediment trace metal concentrations from a probabilistic sampling survey of Alaska's Southcentral coastal region. Results are described on a proportional basis, i.e., percent of estuary area, for the distribution of As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Pb, Hg, Ni, Ag, and Zn in the sediments. With the exception of naturally elevated Cr and Ni at a site bounded by a chromite ore body, sediment trace metal concentrations measured represent non-analmous levels. The second manuscript develops natural conditions for fluvial trace metal inputs from two major Southeast Alaska coastal watersheds: Cook Inlet and Copper River. The stream sediment trace metal natural conditions place levels in the adjacent coastal sediments into context. Two exploratory data analysis techniques, the Tukey Box plot and Median + 2 Median Absolute Deviation, combined with geochemical mapping are used to develop stream sediment trace metal natural conditions. The third manuscript builds on the first two to develop a methodology to estimate coastal sediment natural conditions. Population estimates for the cumulative area 90% UCB 95% sediment trace metal of interest obtained from the sampling survey methodology and screened reference sites is used to establishing an upper threshold value for regional natural conditions. While this work establishes natural condition marine sediment trace metal levels for this region, the significance of these levels from an ecotoxciological perspective remains to be established. Additional studies are needed along other sections of Alaska's coastline, coupled with biological assessments, if Alaska is to develop relevant sediment quality guidelines

A Plan for the Reorganization of the School Districts of Saunders County, Nebraska

    Get PDF
Saunders County, Nebraska, is located in the east-central part of the state and is bounded on the north and east by the Platte River. The country has an area of seven hundred fifty six square miles and contains one hundred ten administrative units or school districts. There has been no change in the organization of the school districts since 1919. From that time to the present time the road conditions and means of transportation have improved to a large degree. In the county there are eighty seven one-room or two-room elementary schools in operation, thirteen districts contracted for instruction, and ten districts which maintained both elementary and high schools. School district reorganization has been carried out in other states and in other counties in Nebraska and has been successful in reducing the number of districts. It is assumed that it would be possible to do the same in Saunders County

An Interactionist View of African American Males In Educational Leadership

    Get PDF
During the segregation era, African American males held positions of leadership in schools in African American communities. When schools were integrated as a result of Brown v. The Board of Education, the number of African American males in positions of educational leadership began a rapid decline. Even as the demographics of the United States have become much more diverse, the gap between African American male educational leaders and their white male counterparts remains significant. This study examines the perceptions of African American male K-12 educational leaders about their positions, why they chose to become educational leaders, and the paths they travelled in attaining those positions. The researcher will use a semi-structured interview protocol to collect data from eight African American male educational leaders from within the state of Georgia who hold, or have held the position of principal or assistant principal. The participants will be selected using a stratified purposeful sampling strategy, and come from urban, rural, and suburban districts. Each interview will be recorded and transcribed in order to accurately reflect the perceptions of each participant. The researcher will utilize the modified Van Kaam phenomological approach to analyze the perceptions and attitudes of participants collected during the interviews. Through the interview process, the researcher will be able to correlate the experiences of the participants into common themes and ideas related to the perceptions that African American males bring to the position of educational leadership. These common themes and ideas will be organized in such a manner as to provide school districts insight for providing strategies, services, or support systems that may help African American male educators move into positions of educational leadership

This book discusses the concepts, types, models, and patterns of Japan’s Hometown Tax Donation Payment system, to provide a clear picture of this newly developed unique and innovative fund-raising tool used by municipalities. It also sheds light on the influences that reciprocal gifts provided by each municipality to donors have on local economies by reviewing empirical works and surveys targeting local business owners and local financial institutions. A distinguishing feature of the book is that it introduces a new social finance mechanism that is unique to the Japanese market and could provide policy implications for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) as well as regional development. Furthermore, the book explores the efficacy of the demand–pull approach to support-strengthening SMEs, especially in rural areas. Finally, the book identifies some lessons learned from the system with a view toward advancing research on this phenomenon and making the system efficient and sustainable. As a whole, the book can provide ample benefits to novices, academics, researchers, and policymakers interested in Hometown Tax Donation Payment, an innovative social finance tool.
