Cross correlations of Frank sequences and Chu Sequences.
Sets of Frank sequences and Chu sequences are two classes of polyphase sequence with ideal periodic autocorrelation functions, which at the same time have optimum crosscorrelation functions. The authors consider the crosscorrelations of sets of combined Frank/Chu sequences, which contain a larger number of sequences than either of the two constituent sets. It is shown analytically that the crosscorrelations are similar to those of the original sets with one exception, while the autocorrelations remain perfectly impulsiv
Model Development and Incorporation of GIS Tools for Floodplain Management
Floodplain management consists of efforts to reduce flood damage to critical infrastructure and to protect the life and health of individuals from flooding. A major component of this effort is the monitoring of flood control structures such as dams because the potential failure of these structures may have catastrophic consequences. In order to prepare for these threats, engineers utilize inundation maps that model the flood resulting from high river stages. To create the maps, the structure and river systems are modeled using engineering software programs, and hydrologic events are used to simulate the conditions leading to the failure of the structure. The output data is then exported to other software programs for the creation of inundation maps. While the computer programs for this process have been established, the processing procedures vary and yield inconsistent results. Thus, these processing methods need to be examined to determine the functionality of each in floodplain management practices.;The main purpose of this work was to develop a more integrated, accurate, and precise graphical interface tool for interpretation by floodplain engineers and emergency responders. To accomplish this purpose, a potential dam failure was simulated and analyzed for a candidate river system using two processing methods: ArcToolbox and Terrain Tiles. The work scope involved performing a comparison of the outputs, which revealed that both procedures yielded similar inundations for single river reaches. However, the results of this study indicated key differences when examining outputs for large river systems. Based on criteria involving the hydrologic accuracy and effects on infrastructure, the Terrain Tiles inundation surpassed the ArcToolbox inundation in terms of following topography and calculating flow rates and flood extents at confluences, bends, and tributary streams. Thus, the Terrain Tiles procedure is a more accurate representation of flood extents for use by floodplain engineers and emergency responders
Design and performance of an adaptive MFSK HF terminal.
The paper describes the implementation of a real-time integrated modem/codec system for long-range radio communications, e.g. HF. The system has been developed by the Hull-Lancaster Communication Research Group. The system has been implemented using a proprietary DSP-based architecture which uses the AT&T DSP32C digital signal processor and the transmission format comprises MFSK modulation combined with RS coding. âAâ for AttitudeâAttitudes towards Dyslexia in Higher Education
This paper makes the case for the importance of an empathetic approach to understanding dyslexia, in educational establishments, especially in Higher Education. An awareness of the implications that having dyslexia and how this affects both study skills (concentration, organisation, revision and so forth) and presentation skills (completion of assignments within academic language and structures and without grammar, punctation and spelling errors) is accentuated in this article.This research employs meta-ethnography, the Critical Appraisal Skills Programme (CASP) and a grounded theory overlay to thematic critical analysis. In so doing, UK literature of both quantitative and qualitative format was examined through specifying inclusion criteria and using a filtering approach.The justification for this work is to challenge any institutional or individual indirect discriminatory practice towards students with dyslexia.Conclusions indicate the need for enhanced institutional understanding of dyslexia and associated provision for individual dyslexic learners within Higher Education in its entirety. For example, access to digitalised resources, individual tutorials, assistive technology and adjusted expectations in marking criteria (as not to penalise for issues concomitant with dyslexia)
The Inclusion Conundrum: A Critical Account of Youth and Gender Issues Within and Beyond Sport for Development and Peace Interventions
The sport for development and peace (SDP) sector is made up of various development-focused policies and programs that seek to engage, stabilise, empower and create social and economic change. SDP projects, most often run by non-governmental organisations (NGOs), have been implemented in regions enduring physical conflicts, health pandemics, major gender divisions and other social crises that have a great impact on youth. In this context, sport has been accorded the difficult task of facilitating greater access for marginal, vulnerable or community groups whilst positively contributing to the attainment of diverse development objectives. While the âwhereâ and âwhyâ of SDP has been largely accounted for, the attention in this article is on the âwhoâ of SDP in relation to the notion of inclusion. Drawing on extensive research conducted in Jamaica, Kosovo, Rwanda and Sri Lanka, the idea of SDP as an inclusionary practice is critically investigated. While SDP may âgive voiceâ to participants, especially to individuals with athletic ability or sporting interests, the extent to which this creates social contexts that are fundamentally inclusive remains open to discussion. In this sense, while targeting populations, groups or individuals remains an attractive strategy to achieve specific goals, for example youth empowerment or gender equality, empirical assessments complicate the presumption that SDP programming leads to inclusion, particularly at a larger societal level. The article considers a matrix of inclusion criteria, potential outcomes, and the tensions arising between targeted SDP programming and the often-exclusionary dimensions of sport more broadly, with a focus on youth and gender issues
Polymer translocation through a nanopore under an applied external field
We investigate the dynamics of polymer translocation through a nanopore under
an externally applied field using the 2D fluctuating bond model with
single-segment Monte Carlo moves. We concentrate on the influence of the field
strength , length of the chain , and length of the pore on forced
translocation. As our main result, we find a crossover scaling for the
translocation time with the chain length from for
relatively short polymers to for longer chains, where
is the Flory exponent. We demonstrate that this crossover is due to the
change in the dependence of the translocation velocity v on the chain length.
For relatively short chains , which crosses over to for long polymers. The reason for this is that with increasing
there is a high density of segments near the exit of the pore, which slows down
the translocation process due to slow relaxation of the chain. For the case of
a long nanopore for which , the radius of gyration along
the pore, is smaller than the pore length, we find no clear scaling of the
translocation time with the chain length. For large , however, the
asymptotic scaling is recovered. In this regime, is almost independent of . We have previously found that for a polymer,
which is initially placed in the middle of the pore, there is a minimum in the
escape time for . We show here that this minimum
persists for a weak fields such that is less than some critical value,

Contested states and the politics of sport: the case of Kosovo â division, development, and recognition
© 2016 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis GroupThis paper provides the first detailed analysis of the politics of sport in the small, post-conflict, contested state of Kosovo, located in the Western Balkan region of Europe. A former province of Yugoslavia, Kosovo endured a bloody civil war in the late 1990s between Serbian-led Yugoslav forces and Kosovo Liberation Army. In the post-conflict context, Kosovo has undergone a long period of reconstruction with major Western support; has been partially recognised by the international community since declaring independence from Serbia in 2008; and, has experienced significant regional ethno-national divisions and tensions, primarily between the Albanian majority and Serbian minority. We examine how sport in Kosovo influences and is influenced by these wider political processes. Our discussion is organised into three main parts. First, we set out our analytical approach, and then outline the main historical, social, and political features of Kosovo. Second, we examine the key political aspects of sport in Kosovo, with respect to development, the struggle for recognition, and social conflicts and divisions. Third, we address the cultural politics of sport in Kosovo with reference to issues of national and transnational identification, symbolic conflicts involving different national groups, and the role of the sport for development and peace (SDP) sector in building better cross-community ties. Our analysis is underpinned by international relations theories, notably a mix of critical and constructivist approaches; and draws on fieldwork and many interviews with key stakeholders in the sport, development, government, and education sectors in Kosovo
Exact solution of a linear molecular motor model driven by two-step fluctuations and subject to protein friction
We investigate by analytical means the stochastic equations of motion of a
linear molecular motor model based on the concept of protein friction. Solving
the coupled Langevin equations originally proposed by Mogilner et al. (A.
Mogilner et al., Phys. Lett. {\bf 237}, 297 (1998)), and averaging over both
the two-step internal conformational fluctuations and the thermal noise, we
present explicit, analytical expressions for the average motion and the
velocity-force relationship. Our results allow for a direct interpretation of
details of this motor model which are not readily accessible from numerical
solutions. In particular, we find that the model is able to predict
physiologically reasonable values for the load-free motor velocity and the

Building a Model of Collaboration Between Historically Black and Historically White Universities
Despite increases over the last two decades in the number of degrees awarded to students from underrepresented groups in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines, enhancing diversity in these disciplines remains a challenge. This article describes a strategic approach to this challengeâthe development of a collaborative partnership between two universities: the historically Black Elizabeth City State University and the historically White University of New Hampshire. The partnership, a type of learning organization built on three mutually agreed upon principles, strives to enhance opportunities for underrepresented students to pursue careers in the STEM disciplines. This article further describes six promising practices that framed the partnership, which resulted in the submission of nine proposals to federal agencies and the funding of four grants that led to the implementation, research, learning, and evaluation that followed
