(WP26/02 Clave pdf) Information Technologies (IT) can be used as an agent to foster social change. This case study describes an Internet start-up, Lonxanet, and analyzes its role as catalyst of drastic changes in the Galician (NW Spain) artisanal seafood fisheries. These fisheries are traditionally associated to rural communities of fishers, selling their products in local auction markets known as "lonxas". Galician seafood is hugely appreciated in the Spanish market, where products can achieve extremely high prices and have luxurious connotations....Electronic commerce, Fishing industry, Internet, Marketplaces, Markets, Social change

(WP28/02 Clave pdf) Commerce among firms through the Internet, the so-called B2B commerce, constitutes a newly developed area in which most theses are yet to be demonstrated. The value proposition for firms in B2B commerce suggests the creation of highly efficient markets, access to a larger number of suppliers and/or customers, or even internal productivity increases. However, firms´ perceptions of such benefits have not been empirically researched yet. In this study, 152 large Spanish firms are surveyed to gain some insights about their perceptions and developments regarding B2B....B2B, Electronic commerce, Internet, Marketplace, Electronic markets

Methodology And Rigor How ´False Prophets´ Pushed Firms To The Dot.Com Cliff

(WP13/02 Clave pdf) The advent of the so-called ´Internet bubble´ has brought back the issue of rigorous versus relevant research: in fast-moving environments, academic research might be sometimes too slow or too afasted from reality to serve as a true decision instrument for companies. Under such circumstances, many firms may decide to rely in other sources of knowledge, such as consultancy or market research firms. In the present opinion article, a point is made about the lack of rigor of these sources of knowledge, and how these research reports may have damaged firms´ profitability by abandoning the traditional academic review cycle and incurring in the worst methodological mistakesConsulting, Internet, Methodology, Research , Rigor academic

Improvement in survivorship: The key for population recovery?

    Get PDF
In northern Patagonia, commercial harvesting of South American sea lions, Otaria flavescens, from 1920 to 1960, decimated its population abundance. Population recovery was not immediate after hunting ceased in 1962. The population was stable until 1989, and since then has grown at an annual rate of increase of 5.7%. Along with this growth there was an increase of the juvenile fraction and changes in the social composition of colonies, which could be related to changes in some population vital rates. The aim of this study was to analyze changes in the survivorship pattern of Otaria flavescens through time. The ultimate goal was to contribute to a better understanding of changes that could have operated on the ecosystem after the decline and recovery of one of the main marine top-predators in the southern South Atlantic Ocean. The comparisons of survivorship curves of males and females, obtained from the life tables of two periods with different population trends: 1981-1987 (stationary) and 2000-2008 (recovering), showed that there were differences in survivorship between sexes, where recent female age-specific survival was higher than that of males at any age. The comparison of survivorship between periods showed differences in both sexes. Both juveniles and adults, both male and female, from the recent period showed higher survival than those of the 1980’s decade. This improvement in survivorship could be one of the essential factors that drove population recovery in the last decades. Here we discuss the possible hypotheses of which factors could have changed in the ecosystem to favour juvenile and adult survivorship, such as an increase in the availability of food recourses, a decrease of exogenous mortality causes, or a combination of both factors.Fil: Grandi, Maria Florencia. IT as an Agent of Social Change: Lonxanet and the Case of the Galician Artisanal Fisheries

Information technologies (IT) can be used as an agent to foster social change. This case study describes an Internet start-up, Lonxanet, and analyzes its potential role as a catalyst of changes in the Galician (northwest Spain) artisanal seafood fisheries. These fisheries are traditionally associated to rural communities of fishers, selling their products in local auction markets known as lonxas. Galician seafood is hugely appreciated in the Spanish market, where products achieve very high prices and have luxurious connotations. However, the product passes through a wide array of intermediaries where lack of transparence prevails until it reaches the end market, so fishers achieve just a tiny amount of the potential profits despite assuming all the risks associated to the extractive phase. In order to foster social and economic change, Lonxanet proposes a large electronic marketplace initiative partially owned by fishersí organizations, integrating marketing and logistic services and selling directly to restaurants and other final consumers. This change enables fishers to exert control over the whole commercial cycle. Consequently, they switch from a survival mentality to an industrial one, and they become especially interested in the sustainability of the resource, thus achieving environmental benefits

We present a new record of sperm whale with notes on diet, age determination and a review of strandings along the continental Argentine coast. A complete necropsy was made in the field, and morphometric data were taken. The specimen stranded was a mature male of 64+ years old. This is the oldest specimen determined for a sperm whale in the Southwest Atlantic coast. In the stomach contents a total of 302 cephalopod lower beaks were recovered. Cestodes were present in the blubber but parasites were not found in stomach and intestine contents.Fil: Degrati, Mariana. Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas. Analysing the natural population growth of a large marine mammal after a depletive harvest

    Get PDF
An understanding of the underlying processes and comprehensive history of population growth after a harvest-driven depletion is necessary when assessing the long-term effectiveness of management and conservation strategies. The South American sea lion (SASL), Otaria flavescens, is the most conspicuous marine mammal along the South American coasts, where it has been heavily exploited. As a consequence of this exploitation, many of its populations were decimated during the early 20th century but currently show a clear recovery. The aim of this study was to assess SASL population recovery by applying a Bayesian state-space modelling framework. We were particularly interested in understanding how the population responds at low densities, how human-induced mortality interplays with natural mechanisms, and how density-dependence may regulate population growth. The observed population trajectory of SASL shows a non-linear relationship with density, recovering with a maximum increase rate of 0.055. However, 50 years after hunting cessation, the population still represents only 40% of its pre-exploitation abundance. Considering that the SASL population in this region represents approximately 72% of the species abundance within the Atlantic Ocean, the present analysis provides insights into the potential mechanisms regulating the dynamics of SASL populations across the global distributional range of the species.Fil: Romero, Maria Alejandra. Integrating Multiple Techniques to Estimate Population Size of an Impacted Dusky Dolphin’s Population in Patagonia, Argentina

    Get PDF
Successful conservation strategies require an accurate estimation of population size and this parameter is one of the most important factors that determine the rate of various evolutionary processes. In this study we integrated information from genetic, photo-identification and aerial surveys of dusky dolphins to determine the effective population size and the number of dolphins that inhabit the gulfs of Peninsula Valdés (GN and GSJ) and are exposed to tourism vessel traffic. Photo-identification sessions and biopsies samples were collected from a research vessel between 2004 and 2013 to estimate the number of dolphins in the area by capture-recapture methods and the effective population size using mtDNA data. In addition, 4 aerial surveys were carried out using line transects to estimate density via distance sampling. The long-term effective size estimated was 992.87-1103.19 individuals. During the photo-identification period and applying a mark rate of 0.416 the total estimated individuals in GN was 374 (95% CI:237-511). For GSJ the estimated individuals in the area was 55 (95% CI: 2-108, mark rate 0.692). From aerial surveys, the overall density estimate was D ̂=0.13 dolphins/km2 (95% CI: 0.052 - 0.35; CV:49.60). The estimation for GN was 325 (95% CI:130-875), while for GSJ, was 104 (95% CI:42-280) individuals. These are the first estimations of the number and the effective population size for dusky dolphins in a small-scale area along north Patagonia. Dusky dolphins groups are impacted by anthropogenic activities, therefore the information reported here contributes population information to help to the species management and conservation.Fil: Degrati, Mariana. Conexiones matemáticas asociadas a las ecuaciones diferenciales ordinarias de primer orden

    Get PDF
