    On weak truthmaking

    Get PDF
Informally speaking, a truthmaker is something in the world in virtue of which the sentences of a language can be made true. This fundamental philosophical notion plays a central role in applied ontology. In particular, a recent nonorthodox formulation of this notion proposed by the philosopher Josh Parsons, which we labelled weak truthamking, has been shown to be extremely useful in addressing a number of classical problems in the area of Conceptual Modeling. In this paper, after revisiting the classical notion of truthmaking, we conduct an in depth analysis of Parsons’ account of weak truthmaking. By doing that, we expose some difficulties in his original formulation. As the main contribution of this paper, we propose solutions to address these issues which are then integrated in a new precise interpretation of truthmaking that is harmonizable wit

Towards a Reference Ontology of Money: Monetary Objects, Currencies and Related Concepts

    Get PDF
Money is so ever-present in modern life that we usually take its existence for granted. Financial crisis like the recent one in 2008 are significant alerts about the importance of money and finance. Having a clear understanding of the concepts on the finance domain is fundamental to figure out the evolution of the economy before innovations in the Finance Industry. This research aims at addressing these issues by investigating the conceptual foundations of money, grounded in the Unified Foundational Ontology and based on the literature review of the most relevant economic theories

Image-based system and artificial neural network to automate a quality control system for cherries pitting process

    Get PDF
Abstract This work proposes a non-destructive quality control for a pitting process of cherries. A system composed of a video camera and a light source records pictures of backlit cherries. The images processing in MATLAB environment provides the dynamic histograms of the pictures, which are analysed to state the presence of the pit. A feedforward artificial neural network was implemented and trained with the histograms obtained. The network developed allows a fast detection of stone fractions not visible by human inspection and the reduction of the accidental reject of properly manufactured products

An Ontological Account of the Action Theory of Economic Exchanges

    Get PDF
In recent years, there has been an increasing interest in thedevelopment of ontologically well-founded conceptual models for Information Systems in areas such as Service Management, Accounting Information Systems and Financial Reporting. Economic exchanges are central phenomena in these areas. For this reason, they occupy a prominent position in modelling frameworks such as the REA (Resource-EventAction) ISO Standard as well as the FIBO (Financial Industry BusinessOntology). In this paper, we begin a well-founded ontological analysisof economic exchanges inspired by a recent ontological view on the nature of economic transactions. According to this view, what counts asan economic transaction is based on an agreement on the actions thatthe agents are committed to perform. The agreement is in turn based on convergent preferences about the course of action to bring about. This view enables a unified treatment of economic exchanges, regardless the object of the transaction, and complies with the view that all economictransactions are about services. In this paper, we start developing our analysis in the framework of the Unified Foundational Ontology (UFO)

Balloon pulmonary angioplasty after pulmonary thromboendarterectomy

.Pulmonary thromboendarterectomy (PTE) is the treatment of choice for patients with chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH) as it can remove the chronic, fibrotic, flow-limiting organized thrombi within the pulmonary arterial bed, addressing the primum movens of the disease (1). Despite significant improvement in all haemodynamic parameters, residual pulmonary hypertension (PH) is frequent after PTE, ranging from 17% to 31% (2,3). There is no clear definition of residual PH after PTE, and the actual incidence of this condition has been difficult to quantify. Usually, moderate residual PH is well tolerated by patients and, as shown by data from the United Kingdom cohort, clinically relevant residual PH after PTE mainly occur when the mean pulmonary arterial pressure (mPAP) is greater than 30–35 mmHg (3). The risk of persistent/recurrent PH in the long-term underlines the importance of a systematic patient follow-up, even after PTE. Balloon pulmonary angioplasty (BPA) has been developed as a compassionate procedure for symptomatic patients with CTEPH who are ineligible for surgery or with persistent/recurrent PH after PTE. BPA is not able to remove clots as PTE, but it is able to restore the flow by fragmenting the thrombotic and fibrotic material, resulting in hemodynamic and clinical improvement. Selection of good candidates for BPA, especially after PTE, includes a complete re-assessment of the patient with persistent symptomatic PH after PTE at least four to six months after surgery using high quality imaging techniques such as computed tomography pulmonary angiography (CTPA), selective pulmonary angiography (to provide fine details) and right heart catheterization (RHC) to assess the hemodynamic impairment. However, these imaging techniques are not widely available and require expertise

Framing automatic grading techniques for open-ended questionnaires responses. A short survey

    Get PDF
The assessment of students' performances is one of the essential components of teaching activities, and it poses different challenges to teachers and instructors, especially when considering the grading of responses to open-ended questions (i.e., short-answers or essays). Open-ended tasks allow a more in-depth assessment of students' learning levels, but their evaluation and grading are time-consuming and prone to subjective bias. For these reasons, automatic grading techniques have been studied for a long time, focusing mainly on short-answers rather than long essays. Given the growing popularity of Massive Online Open Courses and the shifting from physical to virtual classrooms environments due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the adoption of questionnaires for evaluating learning performances has rapidly increased. Hence, it is of particular interest to analyze the recent effort of researchers in the development of techniques designed to grade students' responses to open-ended questions. In our work, we consider a systematic literature review focusing on automatic grading of open-ended written assignments. The study encompasses 488 articles published from 1984 to 2021 and aims at understanding the research trends and the techniques to tackle essay automatic grading. Lastly, inferences and recommendations are given for future works in the Learning Analytics field

A case of hemorrhagic shock due to massive upper gastrointestinal bleeding: from the differential diagnosis to the correct management

    Get PDF
Upper Gastro-Intestinal Bleeding (UGIB) spans from minor bleeding to life-threatening events. Identification of early signs of shock, proper management of hemodynamically unstable patients, and correct risk stratification are essential for an appropriate diagnostic workup and therapy. This case reports a young man admitted to the emergency department with haematemesis. His medical history was unremarkable, without any risk factors for gastrointestinal bleeding. A few hours after admission, further episodes of haematemesis occurred, and the patient's condition rapidly deteriorated to irreversible shock. A contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CECT) revealed morphological features of chronic liver disease and oesophagal varices. The patient underwent upper gastrointestinal endoscopy, confirming oesophagal varices with massive bleeding. Although promptly applied, endoscopic hemostasis was ineffective, and the patient died twenty-four hours after admission. Based on this case, we reviewed the diagnostic and therapeutic approaches for patients with massive UGIB and provided a practical approach to this life-threatening emergency

A pragmatic approach to risk assessment in pulmonary arterial hypertension using the 2015 European Society of Cardiology/European Respiratory Society guidelines

open12noTo optimise treatment of patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), the 2015 European Society of Cardiology/European Respiratory Society guidelines recommend using risk stratification, with the aim of patients achieving low-risk status. Previous analyses of registries made progress in using risk stratification approaches, however, the focus is often on patients with a low-risk prognosis, whereas most PAH patients are in intermediate-risk or high-risk categories. Using only six parameters with high prognostic relevance, we aimed to demonstrate a pragmatic approach to individual patient risk assessment to discriminate between patients at low risk, intermediate risk and high risk of death. This work was supported by Department of Experimental, Diagnostic and Specialty Medicine-DIMES, University of Bologna, Bologna, Italy and by the National Institute of Biostructures and Biosystems, Rome, Italy.openDardi, Fabio; Manes, Alessandra; Guarino, Daniele; Zuffa, Elisa; De Lorenzis, Alessandro; Magnani, Ilenia; Rotunno, Mariangela; Ballerini, Alberto; Lo Russo, Gerardo Vito; Nardi, Elena; Galiè, Nazzareno; Palazzini, MassimilianoDardi, Fabio; Manes, Alessandra; Guarino, Daniele; Zuffa, Elisa; De Lorenzis, Alessandro; Magnani, Ilenia; Rotunno, Mariangela; Ballerini, Alberto; Lo Russo, Gerardo Vito; Nardi, Elena; Galiè, Nazzareno; Palazzini, Massimilian

Electro-optically tunable microring resonators in lithium niobate

Optical microresonators have recently attracted a growing attention in the photonics community. Their applications range from quantum electro-dynamics to sensors and filtering devices for optical telecommunication systems, where they are likely to become an essential building block. The integration of nonlinear and electro-optical properties in the resonators represents a very stimulating challenge, as it would incorporate new and more advanced functionality. Lithium niobate is an excellent candidate material, being an established choice for electro-optic and nonlinear optical applications. Here we report on the first realization of optical microring resonators in submicrometric thin films of lithium niobate. The high index contrast films are produced by an improved crystal ion slicing and bonding technique using benzocyclobutene. The rings have radius R=100 um and their transmission spectrum has been tuned using the electro-optic effect. These results open new perspectives for the use of lithium niobate in chip-scale integrated optical devices and nonlinear optical microcavities.Comment: 15 pages, 8 figure

Predicting in-hospital mortality in patients admitted from the emergency department for pulmonary embolism: Incidence and prognostic value of deep vein thrombosis. A retrospective study

Background Pulmonary embolism (PE) is one of the most common causes of death from cardiovascular disease. Although deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is the leading cause of PE, its prognostic role is unclear. This study investigated the incidence and prognostic value of DVT in predicting in-hospital mortality (IHM) in patients admitted from the emergency department (ED) for PE.Methods This retrospective cohort study was conducted in the ED of a third-level university hospital. Patients over 18 years admitted for PE between 1 January 2018 and 31 December 2022 were included. Results Five hundred and thirty patients (mean age 73.13 years, 6% IHM) were included. 69.1% of cases had DVT (36.4% unilateral femoral vein, 3.6% bilateral, 39.1% unilateral popliteal vein, 2.8% bilateral, 45.7% distal vein thrombosis and 7.4% iliocaval involvement). Patients who died in hospital had a higher Pulmonary Embolism Severity Index (PESI) (138.6 vs. 99.65, p < 0.001), European Society of Cardiology risk class (15.6% vs. 1%, intermediate-high in 50% vs. 6.4%, p < 0.001) and more DVT involving the iliac-caval vein axis (18.8% vs. 6.6%, p = 0.011). PESI class >II, right ventricular dysfunction, increased blood markers of myocardial damage and involvement of the iliocaval venous axis were independent predictors of IHM on multivariate analysis. Conclusions Although further studies are needed to confirm the prognostic role of DVT at PE, involvement of the iliocaval venous axis should considered to be a sign of a higher risk of IHM and may be a key factor in prognostic stratification
