Modelling the growth of a polymer micro-tip on an optical fiber end
Manufacturing end-of-fiber optical components able to realize optical
functions ranging from a simple lens to more complex functions such as mode
selective components is a decisive but \emph{a priori} complex task owing to
the fiber core dimensions. Effective low cost methods allowing to grow polymer
components by free-radical photopolymerization using the light coming out of
the fiber have recently been reported. A novel phenomenological model of the
photopolymerization process underlying is here given and used to simulate the
polymer component growth in a three dimensional time-resolved manner. The
simulations results are thus used to understand and optimize the component
growth conditions, focusing particularly on the role of oxygen either present
in the atmosphere or dissolved in the solution
We investigated physico-chemical mechanisms involved in the photostructuring of photopolymerizable materials. - Two experimental configurations based on spatially controlled polymerization were used: holographic gratings recording and photolithography at the end of optical fiber. In particular, UV-visible spectroscopy and measurements of polymerization threshold energy were performed in order to characterize the role of diffusion of dye and oxygen molecules throughout the photopolymer matrix during inhomogeneous irradiation. The coupling between polymerization and diffusion processes is discussed and its influence on the final properties of the polymer microstructures is highlighted. We have also demonstrated that during the fabrication of end-of-fiber polymer tips, the effects of internai filter and oxygen inhibition, generally undesirable in photopolymerization, can be advantageously used to confine the polymerized volume. AFM used in Pulsed Force Mode was employed to give information on the photostructuration process with submicronic resolution. The close examination of the PFM signal brought accurate information on the local photoinduced modification of the film. In particular, we correlate the PFM signal to the monomer conversion that was measured by FTIR spectroscopy. This study allowed expanding the spatial resolution of the material and selecting the synthesis parameters leading to an improvement in the mechanical and optical properties of the polymer tip. From a fondamental point of view, the experimental methodology and the fondamental approach followed in this work appeared to be of highest interest to investigate the photostructuration of polymers at the micro- and nano-scales.MULHOUSE-SCD Sciences (682242102) / SudocSudocFranceF
