A high resolution line survey of IRC+10216 with Herschel. First results: Detection of warm silicon dicarbide SiC2
We present the first results of a high-spectral-resolution survey of the
carbon-rich evolved star IRC+10216 that was carried out with the HIFI
spectrometer onboard Herschel. This survey covers all HIFI bands, with a
spectral range from 488 to 1901GHz. In this letter we focus on the band-1b
spectrum, in a spectral range 554.5-636.5GHz, where we identified 130 spectral
features with intensities above 0.03 K and a signal-to-noise ratio >5. Detected
lines arise from HCN, SiO, SiS, CS, CO, metal-bearing species and,
surprisingly, silicon dicarbide (SiC2). We identified 55 SiC2 transitions
involving energy levels between 300 and 900 K. By analysing these rotational
lines, we conclude that SiC2 is produced in the inner dust formation zone, with
an abundance of ~2x10^-7 relative to molecular hydrogen. These SiC2 lines have
been observed for the first time in space and have been used to derive an SiC2
rotational temperature of ~204 K and a source-averaged column density of
~6.4x10^15 cm^-2. Furthermore, the high quality of the HIFI data set was used
to improve the spectroscopic rotational constants of SiC2.Comment: A&A HIFI Special Issue, 201
Linking Ecology and Economics for Ecosystem Management
This article outlines an approach, based on ecosystem services, for assessing the trade-offs inherent in managing humans embedded in ecological systems. Evaluating these trade-offs requires an understanding of the biophysical magnitudes of the changes in ecosystem services that result from human actions, and of the impact of these changes on human welfare.We summarize the state of the art of ecosystem services?based management and the information needs for applying it. Three case studies of Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) sites?coastal, urban, and agricultural? illustrate the usefulness, information needs, quantification possibilities, and methods for this approach. One example of the application of this approach, with rigorously established service changes and valuations taken from the literature, is used to illustrate the potential for full economic valuation of several agricultural landscape management options, including managing for water quality, biodiversity, and crop productivity

A qualitative study of the activities performed by people involved in clinical decision support: recommended practices for success
Objective: To describe the activities performed by people involved in clinical decision support (CDS) at leading sites. Materials and methods We conducted ethnographic observations at seven diverse sites with a history of excellence in CDS using the Rapid Assessment Process and analyzed the data using a series of card sorts, informed by Linstone's Multiple Perspectives Model. Results: We identified 18 activities and grouped them into four areas. Area 1: Fostering relationships across the organization, with activities (a) training and support, (b) visibility/presence on the floor, (c) liaising between people, (d) administration and leadership, (e) project management, (f) cheerleading/buy-in/sponsorship, (g) preparing for CDS implementation. Area 2: Assembling the system with activities (a) providing technical support, (b) CDS content development, (c) purchasing products from vendors (d) knowledge management, (e) system integration. Area 3: Using CDS to achieve the organization's goals with activities (a) reporting, (b) requirements-gathering/specifications, (c) monitoring CDS, (d) linking CDS to goals, (e) managing data. Area 4: Participation in external policy and standards activities (this area consists of only a single activity). We also identified a set of recommendations associated with these 18 activities. Discussion All 18 activities we identified were performed at all sites, although the way they were organized into roles differed substantially. We consider these activities critical to the success of a CDS program. Conclusions: A series of activities are performed by sites strong in CDS, and sites adopting CDS should ensure they incorporate these activities into their efforts
Gene-folic acid interactions and risk of conotruncal heart defects: Results from the National Birth Defects Prevention Study
Conotruncal heart defects (CTDs) are heart malformations that affect the cardiac outflow tract and typically cause significant morbidity and mortality. Evidence from epidemiological studies suggests that maternal folate intake is associated with a reduced risk of heart defects, including CTD. However, it is unclear if folate-related gene variants and maternal folate intake have an interactive effect on the risk of CTDs. In this study, we performed targeted sequencing of folate-related genes on DNA from 436 case families with CTDs who are enrolled in the National Birth Defects Prevention Study and then tested for common and rare variants associated with CTD. We consider cosmological models with a scalar field with equation of state
that contract towards a big crunch singularity, as in recent cyclic
and ekpyrotic scenarios. We show that chaotic mixmaster oscillations due to
anisotropy and curvature are suppressed, and the contraction is described by a
homogeneous and isotropic Friedmann equation if . We generalize the
results to theories where the scalar field couples to p-forms and show that
there exists a finite value of , depending on the p-forms, such that chaotic
oscillations are suppressed. We show that orbifold compactification also
contributes to suppressing chaotic behavior. In particular, chaos is avoided in

Calculation of the Electron Self Energy for Low Nuclear Charge
We present a nonperturbative numerical evaluation of the one-photon electron
self energy for hydrogenlike ions with low nuclear charge numbers Z=1 to 5. Our
calculation for the 1S state has a numerical uncertainty of 0.8 Hz for hydrogen
and 13 Hz for singly-ionized helium. Resummation and convergence acceleration
techniques that reduce the computer time by about three orders of magnitude
were employed in the calculation. The numerical results are compared to results
based on known terms in the expansion of the self energy in powers of (Z

Diversity of oxygenase genes from Methane- and Ammonia-oxidizing bacteria in the Eastern Snake River Plain aquifier
PCR amplification, restriction fragment length polymorphism, and phylogenetic analysis of oxygenase genes
were used for the characterization of in situ methane- and ammonia-oxidizing bacteria from free-living and
attached communities in the Eastern Snake River Plain aquifer. The following three methane monooxygenase
(MMO) PCR primer sets were used: A189-A682, which amplifies an internal region of both the pmoA gene of
the MMO particulate form and the amoA gene of ammonia monooxygenase; A189-mb661, which specifically
targets the pmoA gene; and mmoXA-mmoXB, which amplifies the mmoX gene of the MMO soluble form
(sMMO). Whole-genome amplification (WGA) was used to amplify metagenomic DNA from each community
to assess its applicability for generating unbiased metagenomic template DNA. The majority of sequences in
each archive were related to oxygenases of type II-like methanotrophs of the genus Methylocystis. A small subset
of type I sequences found only in free-living communities possessed oxygenase genes that grouped nearest to
Methylobacter and Methylomonas spp. Sequences similar to that of the amoA gene associated with ammoniaoxidizing
bacteria (AOB) most closely matched a sequence from the uncultured bacterium BS870 but showed
no substantial alignment to known cultured AOB. Based on these functional gene analyses, bacteria related to
the type II methanotroph Methylocystis sp. were found to dominate both free-living and attached communities.
Metagenomic DNA amplified by WGA showed characteristics similar to those of unamplified samples. Overall,
numerous sMMO-like gene sequences that have been previously associated with high rates of trichloroethylene
cometabolism were observed in both free-living and attached communities in this basaltic aquifer.Copyrighted by American Society for Microbiology
Impaired perceptual learning in a mouse model of Fragile X syndrome is mediated by parvalbumin neuron dysfunction and is reversible.
To uncover the circuit-level alterations that underlie atypical sensory processing associated with autism, we adopted a symptom-to-circuit approach in the Fmr1-knockout (Fmr1-/-) mouse model of Fragile X syndrome. Using a go/no-go task and in vivo two-photon calcium imaging, we find that impaired visual discrimination in Fmr1-/- mice correlates with marked deficits in orientation tuning of principal neurons and with a decrease in the activity of parvalbumin interneurons in primary visual cortex. Restoring visually evoked activity in parvalbumin cells in Fmr1-/- mice with a chemogenetic strategy using designer receptors exclusively activated by designer drugs was sufficient to rescue their behavioral performance. Strikingly, human subjects with Fragile X syndrome exhibit impairments in visual discrimination similar to those in Fmr1-/- mice. These results suggest that manipulating inhibition may help sensory processing in Fragile X syndrome
