How do organizations cope with extreme uncertainty? The existing literature is divided on this issue: some argue that organizations deal best with uncertainty in the environment by reproducing it in the organization, whereas others contend that the orga nization should be protected from the environment. In this paper we study the case of a Wall Street investment bank that lost its entire office and trading technology in the terrorist attack of September 11 th. The traders survived, but were forced to relocate to a makeshift trading room in New Jersey. During the six months the traders spent outside New York City, they had to deal with fears and insecurities inside the company as well as outside it: anxiety about additional attacks, questions of professional identity, doubts about the future of the firm, and ambiguities about the future re-location of the trading room. The firm overcame these uncertainties by protecting the traders’ identities and their ability to engage in sensemaking. The organization held together through a leadership style that managed ambiguities and created the conditions for new solutions to emerge.Organizational responsiveness, uncertainty, september 11th

How to recognize opportunities: Heterarchical search in a Wall Street trading room

Our task in this paper is to analyze the organization of trading in the era of quantitative finance. To do so, we conduct an ethnography of arbitrage, the trading strategy that best exemplifies finance in the wake of the quantitative revolution. In contrast to value and momentum investing, we argue, arbitrage involves an art of association - the construction of equivalence (comparability) of properties across different assets. In place of essential or relationa l characteristics, the peculiar valuation that takes place in arbitrage is based on an operation that makes something the measure of something else - associating securities to each other. The process of recognizing opportunities and the practices of making novel associations are shaped by the specific socio-spatial and socio-technical configurations of the trading room. Calculation is distributed across persons and instruments as the trading room organizes interaction among diverse principles of valuation.Arbitrage, trading, heterarchy

An evaluation of the Macarena Integral Consolidation Plan (PCIM)

This paper presents a description of the new strategy for the fight against drugs implemented in Colombia since the year 2007. The Strategic Leap Forward, as the Colombian government has called the program, or the Strategic Development Initiative, as the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) calls it, is a step forward in the design of anti-drug policies that are more sustainable and effective in the mid-term. Currently, a pilot project is being implemented in the Macarena region, in the department of Meta (southeast of Bogotá), where coca crops and illicit activities were the norm just a few years ago. The Colombian State, partially financed by the United States governments and European countries, consolidates its presence in this region with the different instances and programs of the state apparatus to recover territorial control and combat the production of illicit drugs. But even more important is that this new approach in the fight against illegal drugs is based on a regional economic development plan, to avoid that peasants become involved in the first stages of cocaine production and trafficking process. The adequate functioning of this strategy can be a reference point to other countries that face similar problems of illicit drug production and conflict associated with these activities.Macarena, Consolidation Plan, Colombia, Anti-drug policies

Personality and nonjudging make you happier: Contribution of the Five-Factor Model, mindfulness facets and a mindfulness intervention to subjective well-being

Mindful individuals are able to acknowledge mind wandering and live in the present moment in a nonjudgmental way. Previous studies have found that both mind wandering and mindfulness are associated with subjective well-being. However, the main predictor of happiness is personality; more specifically, happier people are emotionally stable and extraverted. The present study aimed to explore the contribution of the five factors of personality, dispositional mindfulness facets and a mindfulness intervention to happiness. A sample of 372 university students was assessed with the NEO-Five Factor Inventory, and another sample of 217 community adults answered the Big Five Personality Trait Short Questionnaire. Both samples, 589 participants in all, completed the Five Facet Mindfulness Questionnaire and the Subjective Happiness Scale. Furthermore, 55 participants from the general population sample took a 6-week training course in meditation and developing mindfulness. The regression analyses showed that emotional stability and extraversion traits were the strongest predictors of subjective well-being. Nonetheless, the nonjudging facet, which is nonevaluative/acceptance awareness of thoughts and feelings, still remained a significant predictor of happiness when personality was accounted for. Finally, mindfulness training did not increase subjective well-being. Being nonjudgmental of one’s inner thoughts, feelings and sensations contributes to happiness even when personality is taken into account. Accordingly, it seems reasonable that mindfulness training that intends to improve subjective well-being should focus on noticing thoughts without judging the

Towards the democratization of journalism participant: three models of transparency in the management of coral interviews of MARCA.com

    Get PDF
Interviews of MARCA.com are one of the main forms of online hybrid journalism: users organize an interview with the guests proposed by the online media. Its appeal lies mainly in the low information production costs, the possibility of introducing the concept of Bakhtin’s polyphony (quoted by Araújo and Melo, 2003), and the generation of a more flexible speech, as we described in a previous paper (Barredo and Oller, 2013a). The interplay of these characteristics is the cause that in the five matches between Real Madrid and Barcelona in the season 2010-11, 30% of the total words came from coral interviews (Barredo and Oller, 2013b). However, in these previous studies we have noted an arbitrary function of the organization: in addition to the explicit guidelines in the rules of participation, the online newspaper discards or chooses questions based on undisclosed criteria. With this article we offer three management models which explore the concept of online transparency. Those models can avoid, in our opinion, the stagnation of the coral interviews or similar forms linked to direct marketing (advertorials) and not to journalism

Intermediate Journalistic Cultures. International Comparative Studies in Journalism

    Get PDF
Defining journalistic culture is a complex process as it is necessary to explain on a general level the nature of culture is as a lifestyle. The attitudes of journalists are broadly embedded within meaning spheres that shape typical and traditional values of a common professional conduct. Throughout the last century, Western journalistic culture is taken as reference at all times to act as a model for imitation. However, this article presents the contextualization of different journalistic cultures as informative practice that currently varies from place to place and is determined by the different social, political, cultural and economic situation. The multiplicity-or multipolarity- in journalism, has led to the study of so-called intermediate journalistic cultures defined by having different features of the Western journalistic culture. Today, more than ever, those fragmented cultures mould and develop the static and mono-based standardization of all international journalistic features. The following study clarifies the singularities of journalistic cultures in different regions around the globe. It is a huge task, but necessary to underpin the theoretical notions of an important line of research born in recent decades: international comparative studies in journalism
