    KiDS+VIKING+GAMA: Halo occupation distributions and correlations of satellite numbers with a new halo model of the galaxy-matter bispectrum for galaxy-galaxy-galaxy lensing

    Halo models and halo occupation distributions (HODs) are important tools to model the galaxy and matter distribution. We present and assess a new method for constraining the parameters of HODs using the gravitational lensing shear around galaxy pairs, galaxy-galaxy-galaxy-lensing (G3L). In contrast to galaxy-galaxy-lensing, G3L is sensitive to correlations between the per-halo numbers of galaxies from different populations. We use G3L to probe these correlations and test the default hypothesis that they are negligible. We derive a halo model for G3L and validate it with realistic mock data from the Millennium Simulation and a semi-analytic galaxy model. Then, we analyse public data from the Kilo-Degree Survey (KiDS), the VISTA Infrared Kilo-Degree Galaxy Survey (VIKING) and data from the Galaxy And Mass Assembly Survey (GAMA) to infer the HODs of galaxies at z<0.5z<0.5 in five different stellar mass bins between 108.5h−2M⊙10^{8.5}h^{-2} M_\odot and 1011.5h−2M⊙10^{11.5}h^{-2} M_\odot and two colours (red and blue), as well as correlations between satellite numbers. The analysis recovers the true HODs in the simulated data within the 68%68\% credibility range. The inferred HODs vary significantly with colour and stellar mass. There is also strong evidence (>3σ>3\sigma) for correlations, increasing with halo mass, between the numbers of red and blue satellites and galaxies with stellar masses below $10^{10} \Msun. Possible causes of these correlations are the selection of similar galaxies in different samples, the survey flux limit, or physical mechanisms like a fixed ratio between the satellite numbers of distinct populations. The decorrelation for halos with smaller masses is probably an effect of shot noise by low-occupancy halos. The inferred HODs can be used to complement galaxy-galaxy-lensing or galaxy clustering HOD studies or as input to cosmological analyses and improved mock galaxy catalogues.Comment: 20 pages + Appendix, 14 Figures.     X-ray crystallographic structure of a complex between a synthetic protease of human immunodeficiency virus 1 and a substrate-based hydroxyethylamine inhibitor

    The structure of a crystal complex of the chemically synthesized protease of human immunodeficiency virus 1 with a heptapeptide-derived inhibitor bound in the active site has been determined. The sequence of the inhibitor JG-365 is Ac-Ser-Leu-Asn-Phe-ψ[CH(OH)CH_2N]-Pro-Ile-Val-OMe; the K_i is 0.24 nM. The hydroxyethylamine moiety, in place of the normal scissile bond of the substrate, is believed to mimic a tetrahedral reaction intermediate. The structure of the complex has been refined to an R factor of 0.146 at 2.4-Å resolution by using restrained least squares with rms deviations in bond lengths of 0.02 Å and bond angles of 4. The bound inhibitor diastereomer has the S configuration at the hydroxyethylamine chiral carbon, and the hydroxyl group is positioned between the active site aspartate carboxyl groups within hydrogen bonding distance. Comparison of this structure with a reduced peptide bond inhibitor-protease complex indicates that these contacts confer the exceptional binding strength of JG-365

    Neonatal tolerance to Mls-1a determinants: deletion or anergy of Vβ6 + T lymphocytes depending upon MHC compatibility of neonatally injected cells

    Recent investigations in mice revealed that natural immunologlcal tolerance to endogenous minor lymphocyte-stimulating locus 1a (MIs-1a antigen correlates primarily with deletion of Mls-1aspeciflc Vβ6+ T lymphocytes In the thymus. Similar mechanisms account for acquired tolerance in some Instancessince the neonatal injection of Mls-1 a-expressing MHC compatible cells in neonatal mice within the first 24 hof life causes clonal deletion of Vβ6+ T cells. Here we demonstrate that Vβ6+ T cells are not deleted In mice neonatally treated with Mls-1a spleen cells expressing allogenelc H-2 molecules. However, when such non-deleted Vβ6+ T cells were tested In vitro, no interleukin 2 (IL-2) secretion or proliferation was observed after Mls-1a stimulation. This non-responsive state could be overcome by addition of exogenous IL-2, consistent with the fact that Vβ6+ cells enlarged and expressed IL-2 receptors upon Mls-1a stimulation. Furthermore, the same neonatally treated mice showed In vitro functional unresponsiveness of cytotoxic T cells but not of IL-2-secreting cells specific for the tolerated allogeneic MHC antigens. Taken together, our data Indicate that neonatal tolerance to Mls-1a can be accomplished by either clonal deletion or clonal anergy, and that it does not necessarily correlate with tolerance to MHC determinant

    The overdensities of galaxy environments as a function of luminosity and color

    We study the mean environments of galaxies in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey as a function of rest-frame luminosity and color. Overdensities in galaxy number are estimated in 8h−1Mpc8 h^{-1} \mathrm{Mpc} and 1h−1Mpc1 h^{-1} \mathrm{Mpc} spheres centered on 125,000125,000 galaxies taken from the SDSS spectroscopic sample. We find that, at constant color, overdensity is independent of luminosity for galaxies with the blue colors of spirals. This suggests that, at fixed star-formation history, spiral-galaxy mass is a very weak function of environment. Overdensity does depend on luminosity for galaxies with the red colors of early types; both low-luminosity and high-luminosity red galaxies are found to be in highly overdense regions.Comment: submitted to ApJ

    X-ray Insights Into Interpreting CIV Blueshifts and Optical/UV Continua

    We present 0.5-8.0 keV Chandra observations of six bright quasars that represent extrema in quasar emission-line properties -- three quasars each with small and large blueshifts of the CIV emission line with respect to the systemic redshift of the quasars. Supplemented with seven archival Chandra observations of quasars that met our selection criteria, we investigate the origin of this emission-line phenomenon in the general context of the structure of quasars. We find that the quasars with the largest CIV blueshifts show evidence, from joint-spectral fitting, for intrinsic X-ray absorption (N_H ~ 10^22 cm^-2). Given the lack of accompanying CIV absorption, this gas is likely to be highly ionized, and may be identified with the shielding gas in the disk-wind paradigm. Furthermore, we find evidence for a correlation of alpha_uv, the ultraviolet spectral index, with the hardness of the X-ray continuum; an analysis of independent Bright Quasar Survey data from the literature supports this conclusion. This result points to intrinsically red quasars having systematically flatter hard X-ray continua without evidence for X-ray absorption. We speculate on the origins of these correlations of X-ray properties with both CIV blueshift and alpha_uv and discuss the implications for models of quasar structure.Comment: 9 figs, 25 pages, AASTeX; accepted for publication in A

    Characteristic QSO Accretion Disk Temperatures from Spectroscopic Continuum Variability

    Using Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) quasar spectra taken at multiple epochs, we find that the composite flux density differences in the rest frame wavelength range 1300-6000 AA can be fit by a standard thermal accretion disk model where the accretion rate has changed from one epoch to the next (without considering additional continuum emission components). The fit to the composite residual has two free parameters: a normalizing constant and the average characteristic temperature Tˉ∗\bar{T}^*. In turn the characteristic temperature is dependent on the ratio of the mass accretion rate to the square of the black hole mass. We therefore conclude that most of the UV/optical variability may be due to processes involving the disk, and thus that a significant fraction of the UV/optical spectrum may come directly from the disk.Comment: 31 pages, 8 figure
