The Effect of Vietnamese Refugees on Wages in the San Francisco Bay Area

The issue of whether immigration can adversely impact the earnings of domestic workers in the receiving region is a hotly contested one, even amongst economists. In this paper, I analyze the effects Vietnamese refugees had on wages in nine counties of the San Francisco Bay Area in the first half of the 1980s. I exploit the existence of exogenous variation in Vietnamese refugee settlements across the San Francisco Bay Area counties and use a difference-in-difference design with continuous treatment to obtain my results. I find the arrival of Vietnamese refugees has a statistically significant positive effect on wages. Increased consumption, productivity, and specialization and the existence of government assistance programs all likely play roles in the manifestation of positive effects on wages due to the arrival of immigrants

Propuesta de estrategia de marketing para posicionar la marca Kenwood en las tiendas por departamento del Mall Aventura Plaza de la ciudad de Trujillo – 2012

La presente investigación tiene como finalidad diseñar una Propuesta de Estrategias de Marketing para posicionar la marca Kenwood en las tiendas por departamento del Mall Aventura Plaza de la ciudad de Trujillo. Se utilizó como diseño de contrastación no experimental, cuyo tipo es descriptiva correlacional a fin de dar respuesta a la hipótesis planteada. La muestra fue seleccionada utilizando la técnica de muestreo aleatorio simple. Se consideró como muestra a los clientes del departamento de Electro/Sub división electro menor car audio de las tiendas Ripley y Saga Falabella. Los resultados de la investigación nos ha permitido concluir que existe relación entre el nivel de estrategia de marketing y el nivel de posicionamiento de la marca Kenwood por los 354 potenciales clientes que acuden las tiendas por departamento Ripley o Saga Falabella, reportándose una relación estadística muy altamente significativa entre ambas variables (p < 0.001). Esta relación nos está indicando que a mejor nivel de estrategia de marketing, se encontrará un mejor nivel de posicionamiento de la marca KenwoodThis research aims to design a marketing strategy proposal to position the brand Kenwood department stores in the Mall Aventura Plaza in the city of Trujillo. El papel social que debe cumplir la fuerza pública en el post-acuerdo

La monografía se ocupa de estudiar el papel que ha cumplido y puede cumplir las Fuerzas Militares y la Policía Nacional en el post-acuerdo; una estrategia integral de consolidación y gestión pública, política que ha sido implementada o está aún por implementar por parte del gobierno nacional. La argumentación estará orientada a verificar si dichas estrategias están enfocadas a garantizar o no, que en aquellas zonas donde la influencia de las FARC era representativa, no se repitan fenómenos de violencia derivados en su mayoría por el predominio del narcotráfico y los dineros provenientes de esta actividad ilícita. Para desarrollar la temática propuesta, se efectuará un recorrido histórico sobre el papel delegado a la fuerza pública en el conflicto armado, asimismo, se identificaran las obligaciones derivadas del acuerdo de paz de la Habana que le corresponden a las fuerzas militares y a la policía nacional, señalando cuales actividades que le corresponden a estas entidades en el post-acuerdo contribuyen desde la perspectiva social a lograr una paz estable y duradera, todo lo anterior bajo el enfoque metodológico cualitativo, el cual facilitará el desarrollo de cada uno de los objetivos propuestos. Consensus in Colombia’s 1991 Constitutional Assembly : Abortion and the Notion of “Family”

El presente artículo es el resultado de la revisión de las actas de la Asamblea Nacional Constituyente de 1991 colombiana a la luz de las teorías constitucionales modernas y de los postulados genera les de la Iglesia católica. Su objeto principal es analizar la presencia de doctrinas religiosas en el marco de la definición de familia y la forma como ellas condicionaron el consenso alcanzado por los constituyentes. Lo anterior se realizó por medio de una revisión teórico-filosófica de la relación entre derecho constitucional y religión y del trabajo de archivo sobre las actas de la Asamblea Nacional Constituyente. El artículo pretende demostrar que los constituyentes estuvieron influenciados por doctrinas católicas en la definición del concepto de familia y en el tratamiento del aborto; asimismo, que para llegar a un consenso recurrieron a fórmulas de acuerdo que minimizaron el debate y no agotaron por completo la discusión, sino que la pospusieron para otro momento.This paper reviews the written records and minutes of Colombia’s Constitutional Assembly of 1991, in the light of modern constitutional theories and the teachings of the Catholic Church. The analysis contained in this paper approached the written records and minutes of the Constitutional Assembly by implementing a theoretical and philosophical method focused on the relationship between constitutional law and religion. The paper seeks to show that the framers view of the family as an institution and how they dealt with abortion were influenced by the Catholic Church teachings, but that the problems posed by these complex issues were not definitely solved but merely postponed

Sleep characteristics modify the association between genetic predisposition to obesity and anthropometric measurements in 119,679 UK Biobank participants

Background - Obesity is a multifactorial condition influenced by genetics, lifestyle and environment. Objective - To investigate whether the association between a validated genetic profile risk score for obesity (GPRS-obesity) with body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC) was modified by sleep characteristics. Design - This study included cross-sectional data from 119,859 white European adults, aged 37-73 years, participating on the UK Biobank. Interactions between GPRS-obesity, and sleep characteristics (sleep duration, chronotype, day napping, and shift work) in their effects on BMI and WC were investigated. Results - The GPRS-obesity was associated with BMI (β:0.57 kg.m-2 per standard deviation (SD) increase in GPRS, [95%CI:0.55, 0.60]; P=6.3x10-207) and WC (β:1.21 cm, [1.15, 1.28]; P=4.2x10-289). There were significant interactions between GPRS-obesity and a variety of sleep characteristics in their relationship with BMI (P-interaction &lt;0.05). In participants who slept &lt;7 hrs or &gt;9 hrs daily, the effect of GPRS-obesity on BMI was stronger (β:0.60 [0.54, 0.65] and 0.73 [0.49, 0.97] kg.m-2 per SD increase in GPRS, respectively) than in normal length sleepers (7-9 hours; β:0.52 [0.49, 0.55] kg.m-2 per SD). A similar pattern was observed for shiftworkers (β:0.68 [0.59, 0.77] versus 0.54 [0.51, 0.58] kg.m-2 for non-shiftworkers) and for night-shiftworkers (β:0.69 [0.56, 0.82] versus 0.55 [0.51, 0.58] kg.m-2 for non-night- shiftworkers), for those taking naps during the day (β:0.65 [0.52, 0.78] versus 0.51 [0.48, 0.55] kg.m-2 for those who never/rarely had naps) and for those with a self-reported evening chronotype (β:0.72 [0.61, 0.82] versus β:0.52 [0.47, 0.57] kg.m-2 for morning chronotype). Similar findings were obtained using WC as the outcome. Conclusions – This study shows that the association between genetic risk for obesity and phenotypic adiposity measures is exacerbated by adverse sleeping characteristics

ARTHROPODS IN THE DIET OF THE BIRD ASSEMBLAGE FROM A FORESTED RURAL LANDSCAPE IN NORTHERN CHILOÉ ISLAND, CHILE: A QUANTITATIVE STUDY

Abstract ∙ Knowledge of bird diets is important to understand population fluctuations and the persistence of bird com‐ munities in changing landscapes. However, there is a general lack of quantitative information about the composition of bird diets at the community level in the Neotropics. Although consumption of fruits and seeds by birds has been well documented for forest ecosystems in southern South America, consumption of arthropods has received less attention, despite their relevance in bird diets. Here we describe and evaluate the presence and diversity of arthropods consumed by members of different dietary guilds of the avian community from temperate forests and rural land‐ scapes in northern Chiloé Island, Chile (42°S). We estimated the proportion of arthropods consumed by all bird species captured using mist nests in a mixed rural landscape, and identified arthropods at the order level, based on remains contained in bird droppings. In addition, we estimated trophic diversity for those bird species with the highest number of samples. Arthropod remains were prevalent in dropping contents for nearly all sampled species (17 out of 18 captured species), indicating that arthropod consumption is broadly distributed in the avian assemblage. The insectivorous Chilean swallow (Tachycineta leucopyga) had the highest average number of arthropods per sample but the lowest arthropod diversity. On the contrary, the highest arthropod diversity in droppings corresponded to the insectivorous House Wren (Troglodytes aedon). The omnivorous species, Austral Blackbird (Curaeus curaeus) and White‐ crested Elaenia (Elaenia albiceps) consumed mainly Coleoptera. Finally, arthropod orders found in droppings varied among bird species from the same and between dietary guilds. Resumen ∙ Artrópodos en la dieta del ensamble de aves que habitan el paisaje rural del norte de la Isla de Chiloé, Chile La información sobre los distintos componentes de la dieta de aves resulta relevante para entender las variaciones poblacionales y la subsistencia de comunidades ante la modificación del paisaje. Sin embargo, a la fecha, falta información cuantitativa sobre la composición de la dieta a nivel comunitario en el Neotrópico. A pesar de que el consumo de frutas y semillas por aves ha sido bien documentado para los ecosistemas templados del sur, el consumo de artrópodos ha recibido menos atención a pesar de su relevancia en la dieta de las aves. En este trabajo describimos y evaluamos la diversidad de artrópodos en la dieta de miembros de distintos gremios tróficos de la comunidad de aves de los bosques templados del sur de Sudamérica en el norte de la Isla de Chiloé, Chile (42°S). Para cada especie de ave capturada, estimamos la composición y la diversidad trófica de artrópodos en la dieta en base al análisis de heces. Registramos el consumo de artrópodos en 17 de las 18 especies capturadas, sugiriendo que el consumo de artrópodos está ampliamente distribuido en la comunidad de aves analizada. La Golondrina chilena (Tachycineta leucopyga), especie insectívora, tuvo el mayor número de artrópodos promedio por muestra y, a la vez, la menor diversidad de órdenes de artrópodos en su dieta. Por el contrario, el Chercán (Troglodytes aedon), especie insectívora, registró la mayor diversidad de artrópodos consumidos. Entre las especies omnívoras, tanto el Tordo (Curaeus curaeus) como el Fio‐fio (Elaenia albiceps), consumieron principalmente coleópteros. Finalmente, los órdenes de artrópodos registrados variaron entre aves pertenecientes al mismo gremio así como también entre distintos gremios tróficos.

An optimization approach to study the phase changing behavior of multi-component mixtures

The appropriate design, construction, and operation of carbon capture and storage (CCS) and enhanced oil recovery (EOR) processes require a deep understanding of the resulting phases behavior in hydrocarbons-CO_2 multi-component mixtures under reservoir conditions. To model this behavior a nonlinear system consists of the equation of states and some mixing rules (for each component) needed to be solved simultaneously. The mixing usually requires to model the binary interaction between the components of the mixture. This work employs optimization techniques to enhance the predictions of such model by optimizing the binary interaction parameters.
