Obscenity, Pornography, Morality: Moral Power as Carnal Resonance

    Get PDF
This commentary focuses on the cinematic and intellectual work of Miguel De, expressed through The Kiss and its accompanying essay. The objective here is to problematize some of the historical and technocultural connections raised by the essay, and to frame De’s experimental essay film within a wider tradition of (mostly European) film-making who has as its main aim a troubling of the notion of “pornography”. This troubling is often done through a double deployment of vision: the audience is shown a named something, but maybe not what they were expecting to see, and it is through the disconnect between the naming and the showing that the connections between sexuality, obscenity and carnal resonance are made apparent and contingent. However, as these acts of troubling circulate within the contemporary technological capitalist mediasphere, they quickly become a locus for a potential site of capture, normalization and redeployment of power relationships

Housing unaffordability has become a crisis in Ontario as many residents struggle to find affordable housing across the province. The objective of this research is to uncover how service managers in Ontario are planning to address this growing unaffordability by developing new affordable housing. The following research question guides the methodology of this paper: What measures are being employed by Ontario service managers to facilitate the development of new affordable housing? This was done through an analysis of service manager’s housing and homelessness plans to thematically code measures that pertained to developing new affordablehousing into common themes across plans. This study finds a reliance on land use planning measures and incentives to get more affordable housing online, especially as they pertain to allowing and incentivizing secondarysuites. Comparisons between different service managers show that support from upper levels of government, mostly in the form of increased funding, is depended on more heavily by northernand smaller service managers to develop affordable housing. Finally, more can be done by service managers to collaborate with the Indigenous community to develop more Indigenoushousing solutions. Ultimately, this research is intended to benefit municipal administrators and service managers in Ontario that may question what other jurisdictions are doing to developnew affordable housing

    The Timing of Labor Demand

We examine the timing of firms' operations in a formal model of labor demand. Merging a variety of data sets from Portugal from 1995-2004, we describe temporal patterns of firms' demand for labor and estimate production-functions and relative labor-demand equations. The results demonstrate the existence of substitution of employment across times of the day/week and show that legislated penalties for work at irregular hours induce firms to alter their operating schedules. The results suggest a role for such penalties in an unregulated labor market, such as the United States, in which unusually large fractions of work are performed at night and on weekends.labor demand, time use, wage penalty
