The threaded acetabular cups have shown mid-term bad results. Though the immediate fixation is excellent, as time goes by it has been proven the absence of fixation, appearing a high percentage of mobilizations. An alternative to avoid those failures is the hydroxyapatite coated implant. We have analysed clinically and radiographically 36 cases of Omnifit arthroplasties with cup threaded and coated with hydroxyapatite with an average time of follow-up of 58 months. Ten patients had pain in the hip. Only 63.9% of the acetabular cups were found to be radiographically integrated, six having suffered a clear mobilization requiring surgical review. Seven showed radiological signs of probable instability. The hydroxytapatite coatings does not assure a good fixation in the Omnifit threaded cups, therefore we recommend press fit acetabular components with the possibility of additional fixation with screws

Search for secluded dark matter towards the Galactic Centre with the ANTARES neutrino telescope

Searches for dark matter (DM) have not provided any solid evidence for the existence of weakly interacting massive particles in the GeV-TeV mass range. Coincidentally, the scale of new physics is being pushed by collider searches well beyond the TeV domain. This situation strongly motivates the exploration of DM masses much larger than a TeV. Secluded scenarios contain a natural way around the unitarity bound on the DM mass, via the early matter domination induced by the mediator of its interactions with the Standard Model. High-energy neutrinos constitute one of the very few direct accesses to energy scales above a few TeV. An indirect search for secluded DM signals has been performed with the ANTARES neutrino telescope using data from 2007 to 2015. Upper limits on the DM annihilation cross section for DM masses up to 6PeV are presented and discussed.Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS), Commissariat à l’énergie atomique et aux énergies alternatives (CEA), Commission Européenne (FEDER fund and Marie Curie Program), Institut Universitaire de France (IUF)LabEx UnivEarthS (ANR-10-LABX-0023 and ANR-18-IDEX- 0001), Région Île-de-France (DIM-ACAV), Région Alsace (contrat CPER), Région Provence- Alpes-Côte d’Azur, Département du Var and Ville de La Seyne-sur-Mer, FranceBundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung (BMBF), GermanyIstituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare (INFN), ItalyNederlandse organisatie voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek (NWO), The NetherlandsExecutive Unit for Financing Higher Education, Research, Development and Innovation (UEFISCDI), RomaniaMinisterio de Ciencia, Innovación, Investigación y Universidades (MCIU): Programa Estatal de Generación de Conocimiento (refs. Search for non-standard neutrino interactions with 10 years of ANTARES data

Non-standard interactions of neutrinos arising in many theories beyond the Standard Model can significantly alter matter effects in atmospheric neutrino propagation through the Earth. In this paper, a search for deviations from the prediction of the standard 3-flavour atmospheric neutrino oscillations using the data taken by the ANTARES neutrino telescope is presented. Ten years of atmospheric neutrino data collected from 2007 to 2016, with reconstructed energies in the range from similar to 16 GeV to 100 GeV, have been analysed. A log-likelihood ratio test of the dimensionless coefficients epsilon(mu tau) and epsilon(tau tau) - epsilon(mu mu) does not provide clear evidence of deviations from standard interactions. For normal neutrino mass ordering, the combined fit of both coefficients yields a value 1.7 sigma away from the null result. However, the 68% and 95% confidence level intervals for epsilon(mu tau) and epsilon(tau tau) - epsilon(mu mu), respectively, contain the null value. Best fit values, one standard deviation errors and bounds at the 90% confidence level for these coefficients are given for both normal and inverted mass orderings. The constraint on epsilon(mu tau) is among the most stringent to date and it further restrains the strength of possible non-standard interactions in the mu - tau sector.Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS)French Atomic Energy CommissionCommission Europeenne (FEDER fund)Commission Europeenne (Marie Curie Program)Institut Universitaire de France (IUF)LabEx UnivEarthS ANR-10-LABX-0023 ANR-18-IDEX-0001Region Ile-de-France Region Grand-Est Region Provence-Alpes-Cote d'AzurFederal Ministry of Education & Research (BMBF)Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare (INFN)Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO) Netherlands GovernmentCouncil of the President of the Russian Federation for young scientists and leading scientific schools supporting grants, RussiaConsiliul National al Cercetarii Stiintifice (CNCS)Unitatea Executiva pentru Finantarea Invatamantului Superior, a Cercetarii, Dezvoltarii si Inovarii (UEFISCDI)Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovacion, Investigacion y Universidades (MCIU): Programa Estatal de Generacion de Conocimiento PGC2018-096663-B-C41 PGC2018-096663-A-C42 PGC2018-096663-B-C43 PGC2018-096663-B-C44Center for Forestry Research & Experimentation (CIEF)European Commission PROMETEO/2020/019 GRISOLIA/2018/119,/2021/192 CIDEGENT/2018/034,/2019/043,/2020/049,/2021/023Junta de Andalucia A-FQM-053-UGR18 tLa Caixa Foundation LCF/BQ/IN17/11620019EU: MSC program, Spain 101025085Ministry of Higher Education, Scientific Research and Innovation, MoroccoArab Fund for Economic and Social Developme

Search for solar atmospheric neutrinos with the ANTARES neutrino telescope

    Get PDF
Solar Atmospheric Neutrinos (SA nu s) are produced by the interaction of cosmic rays with the solar medium. The detection of SA nu s would provide useful information on the composition of primary cosmic rays as well as the solar density. These neutrinos represent an irreducible source of background for indirect searches for dark matter towards the Sun and the measurement of their flux would allow for a better assessment of the uncertainties related to these searches. In this paper we report on the analysis performed, based on an unbinned likelihood maximisation, to search for SA nu s with the ANTARES neutrino telescope. After analysing the data collected over 11 years, no evidence for a solar atmospheric neutrino signal has been found. An upper limit at 90% confidence level on the flux of solar atmospheric neutrinos has been obtained, equal to 7x10(-11) [TeV-1 cm(-2) s(-1)] b at E-nu = 1 TeV for the reference cosmic ray model assumed.Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS), Commissariat à l’énergie atomique et aux énergies alternatives (CEA), Commission Européenne (FEDER fund and Marie Curie Program), Institut Universitaire de France (IUF), LabEx UnivEarthS (ANR-10-LABX-0023 and ANR- 18-IDEX-0001), Région Île-de-France (DIM-ACAV), Région Alsace (contrat CPER), Région Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur, Département du Var and Ville de La Seyne-sur-Mer, FranceBundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung (BMBF), GermanyIstituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare (INFN), ItalyNederlandse organisatie voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek (NWO), the NetherlandsExecutive Unit for Financing Higher Education, Research, Development and Innovation (UEFISCDI), RomaniaMinisterio de Ciencia, Innovación, Investigación y Universidades (MCIU): Programa Estatal de Generación de Conocimiento (refs. Comportamiento de las comunidades microbianas del suelo frente al cambio climático en los encinares mediterráneos

    Get PDF
Peer reviewe

Spectral performance of a zero-order liquid-crystal polymer commercial q-plate for the generation of vector beams at different wavelengths

    Get PDF
Liquid-crystal polymer q-plates are commercial devices for generating vector beams at the design wavelength where the device exhibits half-wave (HW) retardance. Since they are not voltage addressable, the operational wavelength remains fixed. In this work we perform a broadband spectral characterization of the q-plate retardance as a function of wavelength, /(k), and identify the wavelengths with retardance values relevant for vector beam generation (p, p/2, and 3p/2). The wavelength is then used as a tuning parameter to change the device performance from a HW q-plate to a positive-QW or a negative-QW q-plate. These performances are analyzed using the Jones matrix formalism. We present a simple procedure to derive the polarization distribution of the vector beams expected at these QW wavelengths, as a superposition of the input polarization state and the output state of a HW q-plate. Experimental results using the red and blue lines of an Ar-Kr laser and an IR laser diode of 980 nm confirm the theoretical predictions. We show that for input linearly polarized light of 980 nm and 488 nm the device generates hybrid vector beams (where the ellipticity varies with the azimuthal angle), while for 647 nm pure radial vector beams with constant ellipticity are obtained. These results could extend the use of commercial q-plates for multicolour vector beam applications

Piezoelectric composite cements: Towards the development of self-powered and self-diagnostic materials

Piezoresistivity is the most commonly used sensing principle in cement-based smart composites for strainmonitoring applications. Nonetheless, the need for external electric power to conduct electrical resistivity measurements restricts the scalability of this technology, especially when implemented in remote structures. To address this issue, this manuscript thoroughly analyses the piezoelectric properties of cement composites doped with reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and evaluates their potential as self-powered strain sensors. To do so, a comprehensive methodology involving voltammetry measurements, open circuit potential determination, and uniaxial compression testing is developed to determine the piezoelectric coefficients of charge 33 and voltage 33. Furthermore, a novel circuital model for signal processing of the electromechanical response is developed and experimentally validated in terms of time series of output voltage, resistance, and the generated electric power. The developed methodology is applied to laboratory samples manufactured following two different filler dispersion methods. The presented results evidence that samples prepared by ultrasonic cleaner dispersion achieve optimal properties, with a piezoelectric charge coefficient of 1122.28 ± 246.67 pC/N, about 47 times greater than previously reported composites in the literature. Unlike piezoresistive cement-based composites, a remarkable nonlinear correlation between the fractional change in the intrinsic resistance of the material and the applied mechanical strain has been observed. Instead, a considerable linearity (R 2 = 0.96) between the externally applied mechanical strain and the generated (piezoelectric) electric power has been found, which suggests the great potential of the latter for conducting off-the-grid strain monitoring applications

Broadband active differential array for the mid-frequency SKA band

This paper presents the design and characterization process of an active array demonstrator for the mid-frequency range (i.e., 300 MHz-1000 MHz) of the future Square Kilometre Array (SKA) radio telescope. This demonstrator, called FIDA3 (FG-IGN: Fundación General Instituto Geográfico Nacional - Differential Active Antenna Array), is part of the Spanish contribution for the SKA project. The main advantages provided by this design include the use of a dielectric-free structure, and the use of a fully-differential receiver in which differential low-noise amplifiers (LNAs) are directly connected to the balanced tapered-slot antennas (TSAs). First, the radiating structure and the differential low-noise amplifiers were separately designed and measured, obtaining good results (antenna elements with low voltage standing-wave ratios, array scanning capabilities up to 45°, and noise temperatures better than 52 K with low-noise amplifiers at room temperature). The potential problems due to the differential nature of the proposed solution are discussed, so some effective methods to overcome such limitations are proposed. Second, the complete active antenna array receiving system was assembled, and a 1 m2 active antenna array tile was characterized
