Korean to English Translation Using Synchronous TAGs
It is often argued that accurate machine translation requires reference to
contextual knowledge for the correct treatment of linguistic phenomena such as
dropped arguments and accurate lexical selection. One of the historical
arguments in favor of the interlingua approach has been that, since it revolves
around a deep semantic representation, it is better able to handle the types of
linguistic phenomena that are seen as requiring a knowledge-based approach. In
this paper we present an alternative approach, exemplified by a prototype
system for machine translation of English and Korean which is implemented in
Synchronous TAGs. This approach is essentially transfer based, and uses
semantic feature unification for accurate lexical selection of polysemous
verbs. The same semantic features, when combined with a discourse model which
stores previously mentioned entities, can also be used for the recovery of
topicalized arguments. In this paper we concentrate on the translation of
Korean to English.Comment: ps file. 8 page
The effects of financial stress on the academic achievement of young adolescents from farm and nonfarm families
This study investigated whether financial stress brought about by economic changes in farm communities had an effect on academic achievement of young adolescents. Additionally, whether this effect was mediated by the social support of parents and/or the degree of dissonance in relationships with parents was also studied. Young adolescents, mothers and fathers from 105 farm and nonfarm families participated. The degree of financial hardship reported by the adolescents was positively related to their feelings of depression and to the degree of dissonance in their relationships with their parents. Their perceptions of financial hardship were negatively related to the amount of social support they felt from their parents, as well as their school grade-point average (GPA) controlled for pre-farm-crisis achievement. Both mothers and fathers reported a significantly greater degree of financial hardship in their families than did their adolescent children, suggesting that they may be protecting their children from this hardship for as long as possible. When the data from the male and female adolescents were examined separately in path models, they indicated that it was primarily the father-son relationship that was affected by financial crisis

The pilot study was conducted on 10 healthy patients and 10 patients with diabetes who enrolled inclusion criteria. Questionnaire validation test was conducted with 41 DM outpatient at PKU Muhammadiyah Hospital in Yogyakarta. Collecting data by interviewing patients based on questionnaire. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS with Pearson correlation coefficients for validation test and Cronbach alpha coefficients for reliability test of the questionnaire. Adherence behavior questionnaire consists of 12 question items, which are divided into three domains: cognitive, affective, and psychomotor domains. Validation results showed 12 valid items where the pearson correlation value was>0.308 (n=41). Cronbach alpha as reliability test results showed 0.78. This result showed a questionnaire were valid and reliable in Diabetes Mellitus patients. This instrument would be use in primary health care for measuring adherence behavior of DM patients
Culture and Moral Values and Sustainable Development in Bayelsa State: The Role of Social Studies Education
It is a fact that there is growing decadence of culture and moral value in Bayelsa State and the Niger Delta region. There seems to be an increased rate of disregard of indigenous societal norms, ethical values and culture to the embracing of alien culture and moral values. The current system of our education laden with foreign traits is the means through which alien culture and values are inculcated and these are inimical to the indigenous culture and values of Bayelsa People. The neglect of indigenous culture and values, in preference to alien ones, result in vices and problems in the Niger Delta societies such as sea piracy, armed robbery militancy, violent crime, terrorism, homosexuality and many others that hinder developmental strides. It is against this background that this paper considers the use of social studies education as a means by which Bayelsa State and Niger Delta to obtain the much needed cutlure and values geared towards sustainable development. The paper is an assessment of how social studies can bring back the Izon culture and values as a means of sustainable development. The paper employs secondary sources of data, especially the internet, using a theoretical framework of structural functionalism. To this end, we recommend social studies education for culture values to be part and parcel of our indigenous education curricula to bring about sustainable development. Keywords: Culture, Society, Moral, Values. Challenges of Material Resource Management among Social Studies Lecturers in Nigerian Universities
The study is focused on the challenges of material resource management among social studies lecturers in Nigerian Universities. The study population is one thousand eight hundred and fifty five (1855). The sample size comprises one hundred staff, one hundred and twenty students, and forty internal material resource managers were randomly selected from secondary schools in Delta and Bayelsa States. A 20 item questionnaire was drawn for the study. This was validated by experts and a test for reliability was conducted using the test- retest method. With the Pearson product moment correlation coefficient, the reliability test was established at 0.89. The questionnaire was personally administered by the researcher with some research assistants. Two research questions and one hypothesis were formulated for the study. The mean (x) and z-test were used in analyzing the data. The findings show that the appointment of an internal material resource manager is appropriate and that material resource management in schools should not be the sole responsibility of the school administrator. The role of the school administrator differs considerably from the material resource manager. Plausible recommendations were made

Reclaiming Eroded Soil Using Sawdust – Poultry Compost for Agricultural production
The removal of top soil with high organic matter content is a critical threat to soil functions in most tropical agricultural lands and compost can be utilized in build up of organic carbon stocks and the soil nutrient. A two - year experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of different rates of compost application on soil properties, yield and nutrient uptake of maize in an eroded soil. The treatments: control, 5, 10, 15 and 20 tonnes per hectares (t ha-1) were laid out in Completely Randomized Design (CRD) and replicated thrice and data collected were statistically analysed. The soil was acidic and sandy in texture, the application of compost reduced the acidity and significantly (p < 0.05) increased organic matter and nutrient content of the soil. Maize grain yield of 3.08 and 2.56 t ha-1were obtained in 2015 and in residual experiment of 2016 respectively with the application of 20 t ha-1 of compost. In conclusion, the application of 20 t ha-1 of sawdust – poultry compost significantly (p < 0.05) improved the organic matter and nutrients status of the soil. Also, the yield and nutrient uptake of maize were significantly (p < 0.05) higher with the application of 20 t ha-1 of compost.
