    X-ray Computed Tomography for Failure Mechanism Characterisation within Layered Pouch Cells

    Lithium-ion battery (LIB) safety is a multi-scale problem: from the whole-cell architecture to its composite internal 3D microstructures. Substantial research is required to standardise failure assessments and optimise cell designs to reduce the risks of LIB failure. In this work, the failure response of a 1 Ah layered pouch cell with a commercially available NMC cathode and graphite anode at 100 % SOC (4.2 V) is investigated. The mechanisms of two abuse methods; mechanical (by nail penetration) and thermal (by accelerating rate calorimetry) are compared by using a suite of post-mortem analysis methods. Post-mortem whole-cell architectural changes and electrode layer deformations were analysed for both mechanisms using non-invasive X-ray computed tomography. Furthermore, changes to electrode surfaces, bulk microstructures and particle morphologies are compared by following a proposed cell disassembly and post-mortem sample preparation methodology. Building on the insights into critical architectural weak points, electrode behaviours and particle cracks, the reliability of X-ray computed tomography as a guide for LIB failure assessment is demonstrated

    Development Roadmap for an Adjustable X-Ray Optics Observatory

    We are developing adjustable X-ray optics to use on a mission such as SMART-X (see posters 38.02, 38.03 and Presentation 30.03). To satisfy the science problems expected to be posed by the next decadal survey, we anticipate requiring effective area greater than 1 square meter and Chandra-like angular resolution: approximately equal to 0.5 inches. To achieve such precise resolution we are developing adjustable mirror technology for X-ray astronomy application. This uses a thin film of piezoelectric material deposited on the back surface of the mirror to correct for figure distortions, including manufacturing errors and deflections due to gravity and thermal effects. We present here a plan to raise this technology from its current Level 2, to Level 6, by 2018

    Ultraslow spreading and volcanism at the eastern end of Gakkel Ridge, Arctic Ocean

    Ultraslow spreading ridges are poorly understood plate boundaries consisting of magmatic and amagmatic segments that expose mostly mantle peridotite and only traces of basalt and gabbro. The slowest part of the global spreading system is represented by the eastern Gakkel Ridge in the Central Arctic Ocean, where crustal accretion is characterized by extreme focusing of melt to discrete magmatic centers. Close to its eastern tip lies the unusual 5,310 m deep Gakkel Rift Deep (GRD) with limited sediment infill, which is in strong contrast to the broader sediment-filled rift valleys to the east and west. Here, we report an 40Ar/39Ar age of 3.65±0.01 Ma for a pillow basalt from a seamount located on the rim the GRD confirming ultraslow spreading rates of ~7 mm/yr close to the Laptev Sea as suggested from aeromagnetic data. Its geochemistry points to an alkaline lava, attributed to partial melting of a source that underwent prior geochemical enrichment. We note that the GRD extracts compositionally similar melts as the sparsely magmatic zone further west but at much slower spreading velocities of only ~6-7 mm/yr, indicating the widespread occurrence of similarly fertile mantle in the High Arctic. This enriched source differs from sub-continental lithospheric mantle that influences magmatism along the Western Volcanic Zone (Goldstein et al. 2008) and is similar to metasomatized mantle - shown to influence melt genesis along the Eastern Volcanic Zone

    Characterization of M,L and T dwarfs in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey

    An extensive sample of M, L and T dwarfs identified in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) has been compiled. The sample of 718 dwarfs includes 677 new objects (629 M dwarfs, 48 L dwarfs) together with 41 that have been previously published. All new objects and some of the previously published ones have new optical spectra obtained either with the SDSS spectrographs or with the Apache Point Observatory 3.5m ARC telescope. Spectral types and SDSS colors are available for all objects; approximately 35% also have near-infrared magnitudes measured by 2MASS or on the Mauna Kea system. We use this sample to characterize the color--spectral type and color--color relations of late type dwarfs in the SDSS filters, and to derive spectroscopic and photometric parallax relations for use in future studies of the luminosity and mass functions based on SDSS data. We find that the (i*-z*) and (i*-J) colors provide good spectral type and absolute magnitude (M_i*) estimates for M and L dwarfs. Our distance estimates for the current sample indicate that SDSS is finding early M dwarfs out to about 1.5 kpc, L dwarfs to approximately 100 pc and T dwarfs to near 20 pc. The T dwarf photometric data show large scatter and are therefore less reliable for spectral type and distance estimation.Comment: 46 pages, 14 figures (24 pages of figures), Accepted for publication in the Astronomical Journa

    Proteomic and functional mapping of cardiac NaV1.5 channel phosphorylation sites

    Phosphorylation of the voltage-gated Na+ (NaV) channel NaV1.5 regulates cardiac excitability, yet the phosphorylation sites regulating its function and the underlying mechanisms remain largely unknown. Using a systematic, quantitative phosphoproteomic approach, we analyzed NaV1.5 channel complexes purified from nonfailing and failing mouse left ventricles, and we identified 42 phosphorylation sites on NaV1.5. Most sites are clustered, and three of these clusters are highly phosphorylated. Analyses of phosphosilent and phosphomimetic NaV1.5 mutants revealed the roles of three phosphosites in regulating NaV1.5 channel expression and gating. The phosphorylated serines S664 and S667 regulate the voltage dependence of channel activation in a cumulative manner, whereas the nearby S671, the phosphorylation of which is increased in failing hearts, regulates cell surface NaV1.5 expression and peak Na+ current. No additional roles could be assigned to the other clusters of phosphosites. Taken together, our results demonstrate that ventricular NaV1.5 is highly phosphorylated and that the phosphorylation-dependent regulation of NaV1.5 channels is highly complex, site specific, and dynamic

    Detecting One-Hundred-Year Environmental Changes in Western China Using Seven-Year Repeat Photography

    Due to its diverse, wondrous plants and unique topography, Western China has drawn great attention from explorers and naturalists from the Western World. Among them, Ernest Henry Wilson (1876 –1930), known as ‘Chinese’ Wilson, travelled to Western China five times from 1899 to 1918. He took more than 1,000 photos during his travels. These valuable photos illustrated the natural and social environment of Western China a century ago. Since 1997, we had collected E.H. Wilson's old pictures, and then since 2004, along the expedition route of E.H. Wilson, we took 7 years to repeat photographing 250 of these old pictures. Comparing Wilson's photos with ours, we found an obvious warming trend over the 100 years, not only in specific areas but throughout the entire Western China. Such warming trend manifested in phenology changes, community shifts and melting snow in alpine mountains. In this study, we also noted remarkable vegetation changes. Out of 62 picture pairs were related to vegetation change, 39 indicated vegetation has changed to the better condition, 17 for degraded vegetation and six for no obvious change. Also in these photos at a century interval, we found not only rapid urbanization in Western China, but also the disappearance of traditional cultures. Through such comparisons, we should not only be amazed about the significant environmental changes through time in Western China, but also consider its implications for protecting environment while meeting the economic development beyond such changes
