    Food and feeding habits of the speckled shrimp Metapenaeus monoceros (Fabricius)

    The food and feeding habits of Metapenaeus monoceros (Fabricius) from Cochin region are given in detail in this paper. Differences in food preference for this specie had been noticed between marine and brackishwater environment While M. monoceros from illshore grounds preferred polychaetes as their main food item, in Cochin backwaters, they mainly fed on crustaceans. Diurnal variation in the feeding intensity was noticed, where, M. monoceros fed more in nights than the day hours. Females in different stages of maturity were found to feed more vigorously than the immature ones. Juveniles and adults in the inshore waters did not show any signifint differena in their food preferences. The present study shows that M.monoceros is carnivorus, mainly depending on animal food items, irrespective of size and sex in marine as well as estuarine conditions

    Land, Caste, and Class in rural West Bengal

    By mapping the trajectories of changing dynamics in land relations in both colonial and postcolonial periods in rural West Bengal, this chapter tries to understand the way the land has been determining the issues of the rural economy in the rural hinterland. Based on field-survey data, this chapter argues, first, that the issues of land are shaped through a complex process of dynamic interaction between class, caste and capital. Second, the way the state and its policies do intervene in this complex process in order to shape the issues of land in rural areas has been complicating the matter further by way of privileging the capital and the landed class belonging to higher castes at the expense of the labouring class belonging to subordinate caste groups.Peer reviewe

Two axes of research are nowadays developed : on the one hand the synthesis of biodegradable plastics, whichever the methods may be, on the other hand the utilization of raw biopolymers, which is the object of this paper. From this perspective, the “plastic” properties of natural polymers, the caracteristics of the different classes of polymers, the use of charge in vegetable matrix and the possible means of improving the durability of these agro-materials are reviewed

    A review of the Dividend Discount Model: from deterministic to stochastic models

    This chapter presents a review of the dividend discount models starting from the basic models (Williams 1938, Gordon and Shapiro 1956) to more recent and complex models (Ghezzi and Piccardi 2003, Barbu et al. 2017, D'Amico and De Blasis 2018) with a focus on the modelling of the dividend process rather than the discounting factor, that is assumed constant in most of the models. The Chapter starts with an introduction of the basic valuation model with some general aspects to consider when performing the computation. Then, Section 1.3 presents the Gordon growth model (Gordon 1962) with some of its extensions (Malkiel 1963, Fuller and Hsia 1984, Molodovsky et al. 1965, Brooks and Helms 1990, Barsky and De Long 1993), and reports some empirical evidence. Extended reviews of the Gordon stock valuation model and its extensions can be found in Kamstra (2003) and Damodaran (2012). In Section 1.4, the focus is directed to more recent advancements which make us of the Markov chain to model the dividend process (Hurley and Johnson 1994, Yao 1997, Hurley and Johnson 1998, Ghezzi and Piccardi 2003, Barbu et al. 2017, D'Amico and De Blasis 2018). The advantage of these models is the possibility to obtain a different valuation that depends on the state of the dividend series, allowing the model to be closer to reality. In addition, these models permit to obtain a measure of the risk of the single stock or a portfolio of stocks

    Calculation of the Phase Behavior of Lipids

    The self-assembly of monoacyl lipids in solution is studied employing a model in which the lipid's hydrocarbon tail is described within the Rotational Isomeric State framework and is attached to a simple hydrophilic head. Mean-field theory is employed, and the necessary partition function of a single lipid is obtained via a partial enumeration over a large sample of molecular conformations. The influence of the lipid architecture on the transition between the lamellar and inverted-hexagonal phases is calculated, and qualitative agreement with experiment is found.Comment: to appear in Phys.Rev.

    Exploring the Support Needs of Family Caregivers of Patients with Brain Cancer Using the CSNAT: A Comparative Study with Other Cancer Groups

    A substantial burden is placed on family caregivers of patients diagnosed with brain cancers. Despite this, the support needs of the caregivers are often under-recognised and not addressed adequately in current routine and patient centred clinical care. The Care Support Needs Assessment Tool (CSNAT) is a validated instrument designed to systematically identify and address caregiver needs. It has been trialled in an Australian palliative care community setting using a stepped wedge cluster design involving 322 family carers of terminally ill patients. The current article reports on a subset from this trial, 29 caregivers of patients with primary brain cancer, and compares their profile and outcomes to those of other cancer groups. Caregiver strain was assessed using the Family Appraisal of Caregiving Questionnaire, caregiver physical and mental wellbeing using SF12 and caregiver workload using a questionnaire on support with activities of daily living (ADL). In comparison to caregivers of patients with all other cancers, the primary brain cancer group had significantly higher levels of caregiver strain, lower levels of mental wellbeing and a higher level of ADL workload. Their physical wellness also deteriorated significantly over time.An action plan approach led to practical solutions for addressing highlighted concerns. Four themes evolved from the family caregivers’ feedback interviews: The extremely challenging caregiver experience with brain cancer; the systematic and practical approach of the CSNAT during rapid changes; connection with health professionals, feeling acknowledged and empowered; and timely advice and assurance of support during the caregiving journey. This preliminary study has demonstrated that the CSNAT provides a practical and useful tool for assessing the support needs of family caregivers of patients with brain cancer and has provided the basis for a larger scale, longitudinal study that allows a more detailed characterisation of the evolving caregiver needs at different stages of the disease

    VIPERdb2: an enhanced and web API enabled relational database for structural virology

    VIPERdb (http://viperdb.scripps.edu) is a relational database and a web portal for icosahedral virus capsid structures. Our aim is to provide a comprehensive resource specific to the needs of the virology community, with an emphasis on the description and comparison of derived data from structural and computational analyses of the virus capsids. In the current release, VIPERdb2, we implemented a useful and novel method to represent capsid protein residues in the icosahedral asymmetric unit (IAU) using azimuthal polar orthographic projections, otherwise known as Φ–Ψ (Phi–Psi) diagrams. In conjunction with a new Application Programming Interface (API), these diagrams can be used as a dynamic interface to the database to map residues (categorized as surface, interface and core residues) and identify family wide conserved residues including hotspots at the interfaces. Additionally, we enhanced the interactivity with the database by interfacing with web-based tools. In particular, the applications Jmol and STRAP were implemented to visualize and interact with the virus molecular structures and provide sequence–structure alignment capabilities. Together with extended curation practices that maintain data uniformity, a relational database implementation based on a schema for macromolecular structures and the APIs provided will greatly enhance the ability to do structural bioinformatics analysis of virus capsids

    A system dynamics model of capital structure policy for firm value maximization

    The complexity surrounding the maximization of firm value agenda demands a comprehensive causal model that effectively embeds the intertwining relationships of the variables and the policies involved. System dynamics provides an appropriate methodology to model and simulate such complex relationships to facilitate decision making in a complex business environment. The objective of the study is to analyze the impact of capital structure policy, being a key managerial decision, on the firm value. For this purpose, the study develops a system dynamics‐based corporate planning model for an oil firm, including the operational as well as financial processes. Various scenarios and capital structure policies have been designed and simulated to identify the policy that helps in increasing the firm value.
