    Testing Overreaction and Under-reaction in the Commodity Futures Market

    Results from previous studies testing for under-reaction and overreaction in the commodity futures market are mixed and inconclusive. Using a data of more than 20 categories of future contacts ranging from agricultural, metal and energy, we have found significant evidence of under-reaction in food and agricultural commodities but not in the energy and metal sector. It is also found that those relatively inactive commodity future contracts tend to have a stronger tendency to under-react than commodity future contracts are very actively traded. The result also agrees with the behavioral hypothesis that under-reaction is caused by gradual incorporation of information among investors

    Active compensation of extrinsic polarization errors using adaptive optics

    We present a scheme for active compensation of complex extrinsic polarization perturbations introduced into an optical system. Imaging polarimeter is used to measure the polarization state across a beam profile and a liquid crystal spatial light modulator controls the polarization of the input beam. A sequence of measurements permits determination of the birefringence properties of a perturbing specimen. The necessary correction is calculated and fed back to the polarization modulator to compensate for the polarization perturbation. The system capabilities are demonstrated on a range of birefringent specimens

    Improvement of Sciatic Nerve Regeneration Using Laminin-Binding Human NGF-β

    Sciatic nerve injuries often cause partial or total loss of motor, sensory and autonomic functions due to the axon discontinuity, degeneration, and eventual death which finally result in substantial functional loss and decreased quality of life. Nerve growth factor (NGF) plays a critical role in peripheral nerve regeneration. However, the lack of efficient NGF delivery approach limits its clinical applications. We reported here by fusing with the N-terminal domain of agrin (NtA), NGF-β could target to nerve cells and improve nerve regeneration. was also measured. Using the rat sciatic nerve crush injury model, the nerve repair and functional restoration by utilizing LBD-NGF were tested.. In the rat sciatic nerve crush injury model, we found that LBD-NGF could be retained and concentrated at the nerve injury sites to promote nerve repair and enhance functional restoration following nerve damages.Fused with NtA, NGF-β could bind to laminin specifically. Since laminin is the major component of nerve extracellular matrix, laminin binding NGF could target to nerve cells and improve the repair of peripheral nerve injuries

    Silencing of LINC00467 inhibits cell proliferation in testicular germ cell tumors cells

    A significant decrease in LINC00467 expression in testicular germ cell tumors (TGCTs) was found in our previous study in comparison to adjacent tissue. Interestingly, the expression of LINC00467 correlated with the pathological grade of the tumor in TGCT patients. The higher the expression of LINC00467 was, the worse the prognosis of the patients with TGCT was. Despite these findings, the exact role of LINC00467 in the development of TGCTs requires further investigation. LINC00467 expression was downregulated in the NCCIT and TCam-2 cell lines via small interfering RNA (siRNA) silencing. The levels of gene expression were validated using quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) analyses. Cell proliferation was evaluated by the MTT and Cell Counting Kit-8 (CCK8) assays, whereas flow cytometry was used to assess the effects on the cell cycle. Western blotting analysis was used to detect expression levels of protein. Additionally, RNA-sequencing and bioinformatics methods were used to investigate the mechanism of action of LINC00467 in TGCTs. The suppression of LINC00467 expression resulted in decreased cell proliferation and induced S-phase arrest. Furthermore, the suppression of LINC00467 downregulated proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA), a protein related to cell cycle regulation, while it upregulated p21 expression. In other studies involving dihydrotestosterone (DHT) stimulation, it was observed that DHT could upregulate LINC00467 expression. In addition, silencing of the LINC00467 reversed the effect of testosterone on cell proliferation. The Gene Set Enrichment Analysis (GSEA) revealed that LINC00467 regulated the p53 pathway by modulating the expression of CCNG1. Our study found that LINC00467 regulates cell proliferation by inducing S-phase arrest through the cell cycle-related proteins PCNA and p21. These findings contribute to our understanding of non-coding RNAs mechanisms involved in the development of TGCTs

    Short-term dynamics of nutrients influenced by upwelling in a small oligotrophic coastal ecosystem, Gan Bay, in the northwest Philippines

    We present a time-series analysis of nutrient and pCO(2) (partial pressure of CO2) levels in an oligotrophic coastal ecosystem (Gan Bay), which was likely to be influenced by upwelled subsurface water. Gan Bay is off Currimao Harbor, in the northwest Philippines and is located at the boundary of the South China Sea (SCS). This 42-h time-series observation was conducted in December 2006. In addition to continuous observations of dissolved oxygen (DO) and pCO(2), discrete samples were collected at a depth of 5 m every 3 h for measurements of nutrients, including soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) and inorganic nitrogen (NO3- + NO2-) in order to examine their dynamics and possible physical and biological controls. We observed remarkably large short-term variations in the surface water, spanning a 10-fold change for SRP (32-330 nM) and from <0.3 mu M to 4.3 mu M for (NO3- + NO2-. DO also varied substantially from a lower end of 171 to 205 mu M O-2. Surface water pCO(2) changed from an equilibrium stage with the atmosphere (similar to 386 mu atm) to a stage where it was a significant source for the atmospheric CO2 (seawater pCO(2) similar to 469 mu atm). We found that the variation of nutrients was driven neither by tidal mixing nor by biological activities, as was suggested by the variations in the total bacterial abundance and chlorophyll a. Instead, our inverse T-S relationship suggested a two end-member mixing process during the observation period. The N:P ratio throughout the observation period was similar to 13.2, which is characteristic of SCS subsurface and deep waters. Moreover, pCO(2) was correlated inversely with the sea surface temperature. It is likely, therefore, that an upwelled subsurface cold water with high nutrients, low-temperature and high-pCO(2) existed. It should be noted that this upwelled cold water did not appear to impact the entire observation period (approximately 35 h of 42 h), which might suggest an extremely dynamic nature for this upwelled cold water mass.     In vivo microelectrode arrays for detecting multi-region epileptic activities in the hippocampus in the latent period of rat model of temporal lobe epilepsy

    Temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) is a form of refractory focal epilepsy, which includes a latent period and a chronic period. Microelectrode arrays capable of multi-region detection of neural activities are important for accurately identifying the epileptic focus and pathogenesis mechanism in the latent period of TLE. Here, we fabricated multi-shank MEAs to detect neural activities in the DG, hilus, CA3, and CA1 in the TLE rat model. In the latent period in TLE rats, seizures were induced and changes in neural activities were detected. The results showed that induced seizures spread from the hilus and CA3 to other areas. Furthermore, interneurons in the hilus and CA3 were more excited than principal cells and exhibited rhythmic oscillations at approximately 15 Hz in grand mal seizures. In addition, the power spectral density (PSD) of neural spikes and local field potentials (LFPs) were synchronized in the frequency domain of the alpha band (9–15 Hz) after the induction of seizures. The results suggest that fabricated MEAs have the advantages of simultaneous and precise detection of neural activities in multiple subregions of the hippocampus. Our MEAs promote the study of cellular mechanisms of TLE during the latent period, which provides an important basis for the diagnosis of the lesion focus of TLE

    Image enhancement suggestions based on machine learning

    Images in image libraries are sometimes oriented incorrectly. For example, a photograph taken with a camera held vertically may be displayed horizontally, or vice-versa. Further, users often capture images of documents; however, the resultant image can include distortions due to camera angle, poor lighting, etc. The captured image of a document often also includes objects outside the document boundary, e.g., a surface on which the document is placed. For some photos, automatic enhancements can enhance the quality of the image. This disclosure applies machine learning techniques to detect if an image is that of a document, if the image is mis-rotated, if the image can benefit from automatic enhancement, etc. When such images are detected, enhancements such correction of rotation, cropping, distortion-removal, etc., are automatically suggested to the user, e.g., when the image is displayed. With user permission, an acceptance or dismissal of the suggestion is used as a training signal for the machine learning model. Enhancement suggestions are surfaced, e.g., as tappable or clickable buttons, when an image is being viewed and are applied upon user selection of the suggestion

    Purification, Characterization and Antitumor Activities of a New Protein from Syngnathus acus, an Officinal Marine Fish

    Discovery and development of new antitumor agents from abundant marine fish are attracting an increasing interest. In the present study, we extracted and purified a novel antitumor protein Syngnathusin from the whole body of Syngnathus acus L., a precious marine fish traditionally used for tumors. Syngnathusin was comprised of 16 kinds of amino acids, mainly acidic amino acids. Its molecular weight was 67.3 kDa and its isoelectric point was 4.57. The N-terminal amino acid sequence of Syngnathusin was determined to be Lys-Arg-Asp-Leu-Gly-Phe-Val-Asp-Glu-Ile-Ser-Ala-His-Tyr and showed no significant homology with the known proteins. Syngnathusin could significantly inhibit the growth of A549 and CCRF-CEM cells. However, the obvious proliferation inhibition against human non-tumor cell lines was not observed. Flow cytometry, morphologic assessment and comet assay revealed that Syngnathusin could induce apoptosis in A549 and CCRF-CEM cells and strongly cooperated with MTX. Syngnathusin could inhibit the growth of S180 tumor transplanted in mice. Syngnathusin may be developed as a novel, selective and effective antineoplastic agent

    Transcriptomics and Network Pharmacology Reveal the Protective Effect of Chaiqin Chengqi Decoction on Obesity-Related Alcohol-Induced Acute Pancreatitis via Oxidative Stress and PI3K/Akt Signaling Pathway

    Obesity-related acute pancreatitis (AP) is characterized by increasing prevalence worldwide and worse clinical outcomes compared to AP of other etiologies. Chaiqin chengqi decoction (CQCQD), a Chinese herbal formula, has long been used for the clinical management of AP but its therapeutic actions and the underlying mechanisms have not been fully elucidated. This study has investigated the pharmacological mechanisms of CQCQD in a novel mouse model of obesity-related alcohol-induced AP (OA-AP). The mouse OA-AP model was induced by a high-fat diet for 12 weeks and subsequently two intraperitoneal injections of ethanol, CQCQD was administered 2 h after the first injection of ethanol. The severity of OA-AP was assessed and correlated with changes in transcriptomic profiles and network pharmacology in the pancreatic and adipose tissues, and further docking analysis modeled the interactions between compounds of CQCQD and their key targets. The results showed that CQCQD significantly reduced pancreatic necrosis, alleviated systemic inflammation, and decreased the parameters associated with multi-organ dysfunction. Transcriptomics and network pharmacology analysis, as well as further experimental validation, have shown that CQCQD induced Nrf2/HO-1 antioxidant protein response and decreased Akt phosphorylation in the pancreatic and adipose tissues. In vitro, CQCQD protected freshly isolated pancreatic acinar cells from H2O2-elicited oxidative stress and necrotic cell death. The docking results of AKT1 and the active compounds related to AKT1 in CQCQD showed high binding affinity. In conclusion, CQCQD ameliorates the severity of OA-AP by activating of the antioxidant protein response and down-regulating of the PI3K/Akt signaling pathway in the pancreas and visceral adipose tissue
